Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic

Part 10: Meeting the Sentinels

Previously on this LP, we defeated almost lost to Shadar the Cruel, resolved the farmer-rancher conflict, and were informed by Jason Depard of the Sentinels' whereabouts.

By the way, Aleph is 1st Lieutenant now, with maxed out Edged, Blaster, Recon and Gunnery skills.

Gimmel is Combat Lieutenant, just like the rest of our party. Nothing really interesting about that.

First we return to Tolte to make sure everything is back to normal.

How are things on Norjaenn?

Never been better. Thanks for your help.

Do you still fight the Ranchers?

No. And my farm is being rebuilt with some Rancher help.

The Farmers are grateful to us, and all's right with the world.

No apology needed, sir. Glad to be of assistance.

I was very upset at the time. I said things I didn't mean.

Do you see that the Ranchers aren't what you thought?

Yes, I do. We will try to work out our differences. There is hope.

Taylor won't talk to us now for some reason; let's see if the Ranchers are doing well.

Do you still fight the Farmers?

No. Our troubles now center on the ranch.

We hope you no longer hold the Farmers responsible..

Of course not. I was distraught when we last spoke.

Will you try to peacefully coexist with the Farmers now?

We are talking now, and that's a start. My thanks to the Federation.

Good. Time to finally find the mysterious Sentinels.

x992 y1121 is the location Jason Depard gave us.

There must be a dark cave somewhere around here...

Found it!

Inside the cave, we're getting ambushed by Gray Bats. Lots of bats.

Going down a worn cave path...

...with some dangerous-looking loose rock...

...we hear a shrill sound from above and encounter our old friends the Koshol.

The Koshol, however, are no Sentinels.

Are you a Sentinel?

No. I am a guardian of them.

It turns out they are the Sentinels' guardians.

Are you a Sentinel?

Travel. They are here.

Are you a Sentinel?

No time. Look onward.

Are you a Sentinel?

No. You must venture right of the entry fork.

Are you a Sentinel?

Onward through the bat maze. You will find them past there.

And onward we go.

Making it through a muddy tunnel...

...we enter the bat maze the Koshol mentioned. This is the maze's southwestern entrance, but entering it via the northwestern one would obviously make our life easier, so let's find it.

Back in the cave's central area, we come across the Great Koshol Temple.

Again -- just like in the cave where we first met the Koshol -- some kind of bright symbols are painted on the walls.

These are the Koshol's living areas, and there's nothing of importance here except for some items we can grab to sell them later.

Alright, we've entered the maze via the northwestern entrance now. Let's see where the exits lead.

Hmm, it looks like the second exit on the right is the one we need to proceed deeper into the cave.

And here we are.

Our path is linear and clear.

We start feeling great! I guess we must be approaching the Sentinels' hideout. The Sentinels are beings of the Light, you know, and the Light cannot but make you feel great.

Oh my, like sardines in a can. These must be the Sentinels, finally.

The regular ones won't talk to us. Haughty bastards.

Just like Jason Depard told us, the Sentinels' leader is called Kedro. Let's see what's on his mind.

I have brought the Key of Thor to you.

We know. Its presence has given us all new vigor.

It tells me that you have powers.

We had powers. Even with the Key we're weak. We must have the Book.

Paragraph 68 posted:

Read 33.

Paragraph 33 posted:

"The Book is a Book of Spells. It is an artifact of Light that Malcolm Trandle stole when he stole our friend the Key of Thor. When we came to retrieve both Malcolm used a great dark light to rob us of our youth and minds. He could not extinguish our minds completely but our youth is lost forever. The Light is bright in you. Perhaps we can teach you what you need to know in order to defeat Malcolm, but we cannot do so without the Book. There are some basic abilities we still remember and which we will impart to you now. By talking from your heart to yourself or to others you can focus the Light to heal injury to yourself. You can sense the presence of other users of Light, or those in whom the Light shines either brightly, or with the dark pallor of evil. You may probe the minds of others, to know that which they most wish to conceal.

"In order to teach you more we must have the Book of Spells. Malcolm has hidden the book in a special location on the planet Earth. You may reach this location only through a transporter in one of his towers. You must go and retrieve the Book."

So yeah, Malcolm Trandle stole not only the Key, but also the Sentinels' youth and (most of) their psi power. Kedro has, however, now taught us the abilities the Sentinels still remember: heal injury, sense light, and probe mind. In order to become more powerful, the Sentinels need the Book of Light, and we must venture inside Malcolm's lair to get hold of it. Easy peasy.

But... just where is Malcom's base?

Paragraph 73 posted:

"The raiders you seek are the descendants of the Earth people Malcolm brought with him to these worlds. Capture one and use the ability we have taught you to probe his mind for the entrance to Malcolm's domain. Once in his domain, find the Book by using the ability to seek out users of the Light. Then bring the Book back to us. Do not try to confront the Betrayer now, for his power is too great. Go."

And now the true significance of the raider interrogation mission -- which we failed earlier -- comes to, uhm, light. We couldn't get anything out of them by mere words, but now that we've got the probe mind ability, we can just force the information out of them. Makes sense... I guess.

Here are the abilities we now possess. They're pretty straightforward.

We can also ask the Key of Thor about the book.

Is it intelligent like you?

It talks, yes! But intelligent?.. Well, yes.

What will the book tell me?

What you need for your quest.

Cryptic. Let's find the book, then.

Next time: entering the Battlestation, surviving a particularly nasty encounter, and getting the Book of Spells.
