Shadow of Destiny

by Mystic Mongol

Part 3

^^^PS1 game? Maybe... it's hard to imagine, though, given that every line in the game was voice acted, and the neviroments looked so good. Just thinking of wandering through beautiful Lebensbaum in a PS1... brr. Still, I suppose it's possible.

The chapter starts with our clueless protaganist going back to the fortune teller.

Aww, c'mon! I stood in a crowd of four people, momentarilly scaring off the man or woman who wants to kill me! Didn't that end their murderous rage forever? Screw you, fortuneteller, I'm gonna go do something fun.

By the way, fated hour: 3:00.

Like watch the juggler! "Even I can do that." So you keep saying, dude. Well, screw my murderer. Time to go touristing. I am supposedly on vacation, after all.

Huh, a building's burning down. That seems bad. Well, that's better left to the professionals, and I have my own problems, like being stalked by a mysterious figure.

They all died in the great sickness, five years ago. Really, this city is just waiting to die.

Besides, I'm a busy, fate-defying man. I have BETTER things to do with my time!

Like watching the juggler! Wow. He sure can juggle, can't he.

Actually, no, what? He just dropped all of his juggling balls and tossed something.

Guess that's his name. Good thing, too, I was getting sick of calling him random things. Much longer and he would have been Green Jacket McBlackshirt.

And the juggler is gone. Spooooooky! Anyway.

FINE.

Eike enters the bar and instantly dies of smoke inhalation. This is why you can't smoke in bars these days... second hand smoke kills. Instantly.

Eike wakes up in the afterworld with the voice saying, "It's difficult, isn't it? To change one's very destiny--" Doesn't seem so hard to me. I just won't enter the building this time.

Oh, come ON. Couldn't you have rewound time further? Still, Eike is in much less of a hurry to die this time.

Trapped in a burning building? About to die a choking, painful death? Murderer probably waiting outside? Sounds like the PERFECT time for your digipad to activate to me, Eike!

Besides, the door's locked.

And downstairs is on fire.

Eike grudgingly uses the device, rocketing himself back to the faraway time of 2:00 pm. Interestingly enough, because I screwed arround in the burning bar until after 2:45, I arrived inside the bar. If I warped back before 2:45, I would have arrived outside the bar, and the chapter would have ended differently. Don't ask me why.

Eike wakes the owner, who soon smells smoke, and runs out of the building. He returns shortly, having stomped out a small fire someone started out back. Had I arrived outside of the bar, instead of talking to the owner, I would have scared off the arsonist myself (without seeing who it was, of course) and the chapter would be more or less over by now.

But hey, someone who can answer a few questions! If you follow the more obtuse solutions to problems, you're rewarded by Eike asking some pretty canny questions of people.

Hmmmmm. See? That's interesting shit right there. That kid who said his grandfather was trapped, he didn't seem like he had just started walking...

Oh, wait, of course. That was in the future, and I traveled to the past. He's younger now! Explains everything.

Anyway, there were some pans down there, and the juggler sent us that note, so... back down the staris, to talk to the owner again.

This time, the owner spots the scribner's egg and scuttles forward to grab it. "My preciousssss...."

Eike's actually a pretty nice guy. Anyway, the owner opens it and sees the note. Being a pretty nice guy himself, and owing Eike to the tune of one scribbner's egg and one bar, he gives Eike an old frying pan he wasn't using. So.... fate defied! Can't be killed by a burning bar if the bar doesn't burn. Time to go back to the present.

I'm seriously wondering if I can skip chapter four entirely with this frying pan--given that the puzzle in chapter four is to see if you can shake the time line until a frying pan falls out. That'd be pretty awesome, if I could.

(Edit: Chapter four has six endings . Guess I'll be doing those on playthroughs 2-5.)

The voice acting's surprisingly good in this game. Might be worth a purchase if you see it in the four dollar bin at your local game store--course, at this point, the only people who still have Shadow of Destiny are people who love it to pieces.
