You don't fuck with Kilo class submarines. They're considered to be the black hole of submarines due to the anechoic tiles that they are coated with. The tiles dampen the passive sound of the engine and also help to absorb active sonar waves. If you let a Kilo class get a headstart on you, you might have a very hard time ever finding it.

The pin that they are wearing on their uniform is the Submarine Warfare Insignia. Up close, it looks like this. Gold if you are an officer, silver if you are enlisted:


In the Navy, it used to be optional whether you wanted to get a warfare device or not. By wearing the pin, you show that you have completed all of the PQS required to be useful in any area of the submarine or ship at any time. You have to spend a year on board, complete a test and then complete a "murder board" where you get quizzed nonstop by your chain of command on your knowledge. If you fuck it up once, you repeat the oral board, if you fuck it up again you ride the chute all the way back down to the bottom. Wearing the pin doesn't get you anything other than some guy walking up to you and stating "Oh...bubblehead...what sub were you on?" You state some nuclear-sub they've never heard of and they nod their head and say "Yea...uh...well see I was working on my pin but...you know...I didn't have time for all that shit. So...whatever." This applies to every pin in the Navy except for Surface Warfare and Air Warfare, because nobody in the Navy except crusty old salts give a fuck what carrier or LHD you served on.
