Let's Play Splinter Cell: Double Agent!
Hello, and welcome to the exciting world of undercover operations! Double Agent is a 2007 game, released for the 360/PS3/PC/XBOX/Gamecube/PS2 platforms, and I'm sure I missed one or two other systems. However, the 360/PS3/PC version is substantially different both in story and execution from the more low-tech ones, interestingly enough. We will be playing the PC version.
Update! Bunnyofdoom has started LPing the PS2-version in this very thread, thanks Bunny! Since the PS2-version is a very different beast compared with the PC-version, even you who have followed my PC run should take a gander.
Double Agent got somewhat battered by the critics when it came. The game got flak for being buggy (PC version, I'm looking at you), and for robbing Sam Fisher of much of the character that was built up in the three previous games. While I agree in part, I have always felt that Double Agent often gets an unnecessarily harsh treatment. There are some brilliant parts to the game, and the story (though perhaps darker than previous games) is solid. I hope more people will come to realize that this is quite a good game, even as it stands in the shadows of its predecessors.
For the full story, I highly advise you to check out my two previous LPs of Splinter Cell 1 and Pandora Tomorrow (SC 2), and Cooked Auto's still running LP of Chaos Theory.
But enough jibba-jabba, let's get to the point.
Below info only applies to PC-version, not PS2-version.
We take the role as Sam Fisher, a veteran intelligence operative currently working for the National Security Agency's top secret Third Echelon division. After a personal tragedy strikes Fisher, he takes the most dangerous assignment he can get his hands on. He is to infiltrate a domestic U.S terrorist group calling itself John Browns Army, or the JBA. Posing as a member of the JBA, Fisher has to balance the tasks of keeping up appearances in front of the terrorists, and fulfilling his NSA objectives.
As I said, we will be playing the (oh so buggy) PC version. We will be playing on Normal difficulty, breaking the trend of the other LPs. I considered this decision with great care, but I finally decided that it was the right choice. The main reason (and pretty much only reason) why Hard was not chosen, is that on Hard you get no/zero/nada ammo for your guns. This limits the way I want to play and construct the narrative in this LP far too much. It will not be a 100% stealth run/no kill run either. Such gameplay is far too cautious and boring to watch for any length. I will try to present an exciting view of the levels. And besides, the knife is far to good not to be used.
Otherwise, the LP will follow the same formula as my other Fisher LPs. The videos will be in semi-narrative form, with minimum amount of suspension breaking or cuts. I want to show off the story and narrative, not every secret or easter egg. There will probably be bonus videos for major alternate routes, actions taken and so on.
Any e-mails or other relevant in-game data will be presented along with each post. Major gameplay mechanics will be explained in the mission posts as we encounter them.
Characters: (Updated up until latest mission, so contains spoilers)
As a Splinter Cell, an agent of Third Echelon, the NSA's most secret subgroup, Sam Fisher has been trained to secure his country's defence by mounting a good offence. In addition to their weapons and hand-to-hand training, Splinter Cells use the latest high technology and espionage techniques to infiltrate sensitive locations, retrieve information, and execute operations the U.S. government cannot acknowledge. Fisher has been on the front lines of espionage through several key decades of world history. He has not only survived but excelled in his field through hard work, insatiable curiosity, and brutal honesty. He has little time for polite niceties and even less for lies. He is quiet, instinctive, and observant, somebody who watches from the outside. But in order to achieve the discipline necessary for his work, Fisher has had to bury certain parts of himself. He is a man of few words, a man with a strange and slightly dark sense of humour, a man with an adult daughter whom he loves but hardly knows. He is truly himself only when he is on the job - he has, in a sense, become what he does. This is where his world makes sense, where there are allies and enemies, and the difference has always been simple and clear...until now.
Lambert is the Third Echelon director in charge of all field operations, answering only to one man. He became involved in the intelligence community as a young man, rising quickly in rank and responsibility. Serving in the Persian Gulf before and during Desert Storm, he co-ordinated intelligence and ran double agents. He moved on to Third Echelon, where he spearheaded the ambitious Splinter Cell program. Those missions scored several impressive successes, due in large part to the involvement of Lambert's subordinate and friend Sam Fisher. Although still a popular and well-connected man in Washington, D.C., Lambert's recent proposals for changes in National Security structures and procedures have turned him into a political hot potato - and a potential liability.
Hisham is a rising star within the CIA, a smart and efficient agent with a stellar record. For this, he was assigned to work with the NSA in the JBA-operation. Currently working undercover inside the JBA's ally Massoud's terrorist network.

He also functions as a member of Emile Dufraisne's inner circle, and often acts to carry out Dufraisne's policy decisions personally.

Strong, commanding personality, very intelligent. Single, never married, no romantic history to speak of. Is the absolute authority in the JBA, and will brook no interference.
Medical history: For a man of his age, Dufraisne is in perfect health. Blood pressure is somewhat high, as is cholesterol, but other readings are well within ideal parameters. Dufraisne is still physically powerful, and can intimidate as much with force as with personality.

Medical history: Moss is physically powerful, if not particularly agile. He works out incessantly, and is extremely strong. His knee has healed sufficently to allow him average mobility and cannot be considered a weakness.
Activities: Carson Moss is the head of security for the JBA. He enjoys Emile Dufraisne's unquestioned trust, and carries out many of Dufraisne's most sensitive orders. He also commands all security details within the group.
