Part 5: Kalinatech

The situation: The leak at the CIA traced back to the nearby offices of the Kalinatech company. Information suggests that the terrorists present in the building have been alerted to this fact and are destroying all evidence of their activities.

The mission: Fisher must make a rapid infiltration of Kalinatech and extract whatever evidence he can, in hopes of it leading to President Nikoladze.

Description:

Following is a transcription of a telephone call between Anna Grimsdottir and an unidentified Georgian mercenary, alias "Ivan."

TEXT:

AG: 911 Emergency

IVAN: What the hell? I've been transferred 3 times. This is an emergency!

AG: Sir, are you in immediate danger?

IVAN: Yes I'm in danger! They're going (static)

AG: Are you still there sir? Hello?

IVAN: Yes! You've got to help me! I can tell your government things.

AG: What's your location?

IVAN: Kalinatek Building. You have to hurry. I triggered a fire alarm.

AG: Sir?

IVAN: What I'm saying is that I'm safe for now, they can't get through the fire doors, but when they figure out I'm dead!

AG: Can I have your name sir?

IVAN: What? Um. Call me Ivan. Listen, tell your government I'm valuable.

AG: Sir?

IVAN: I work for these people. The Georgians. Kombayn Nikoladze. I know things.

AG: If you'd like to tell me

IVAN: Ha! Get me out alive, and I'll talk. Until then nothing.

Mr. Masse,

Just wanted to draw your attention to some of the files in the latest FTP'd stuff from Dougherty's PC. Those "TSA" files stand for Transportation Federal Security Administration, we think they are CIA confirmations of digital access keys for federal air traffic servers. Is that useful? Just wanted to make sure you saw it.

Ruslan,

Pavel says he briefed you on the wall mines. But I want to make sure you understand. They are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Do not think that they are a toy.

The mines detect motion by emitting an infrared pulse every half second. If you move to quickly during that pulse, YOU'RE DEAD, Ruslan. When you place a mine on a wall, it will self-activate. It will been rapidly for one second, and then emit a solid tone for a second more. After that, it's LIVE and DANGEROUS. So set the mine and move back quickly.

If you need to move a mine, APPROACH IT SLOWLY. And only try to grab it when the GREEN LIGHT IS ON. This is important. GRAB THE MINE WHEN THE GREEN LIGHT IS ON.

You will know you screwed up if the light starts blinking faster. When that happens, RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

Be careful Ruslan, I worry about you.

Edik.

Mr. Masse,

We got this ten minutes ago from a clerk at one of the ISPs subcontracting from Kalinatek before we bought them out. We don't think we need to worry about the FBI yet, but they might go to the better business bureau. What should we do? We're going to need more resources if we're expected to keep pretending we're an internet startup.

These Russian mafia goons want to go to the clerk's house and slit his throat. God, these guys creep me out.

Grinko,

I've gone very carefully through all the files we pulled from Dougherty's machine and we can find no mention of this "Ark". Your message suggested it would be high on the CIA's list of threats to national security, but this does not appear to be the case.

We will keep monitoring Dougherty's PC and hope for the best. I feel strongly that we should not attempt to insert another "peep hole" into Langley's data stream. I do not think we will be presented with another opportunity as advantegous as Dougherty.

Sincerly,
Averiy

Averiy,

I really feel we are not being cautious enough in our monitoring of Dougherty's PC. Unless he is a complete nincompoop or suffering from soe nervous affliction, he is bound to catch on to our spying.

We would be much safer monitoring bundled files, intermittently transmitted, rather than this steady tapping of the data stream. I've stated this concerns before without result, and want to be on the record with my point of view.

Thank you.

Timofey,

No, the metal detector cannot give you cancer. Your guard post is a safe one. Don't let yourself get distracted.
