Part 12: Willkommen in Hotel Schlumpfen

– Willkommen in Hotel Schlumpfen

We’ve tracked Onyx down to Heidelberg, and it’s time to stop that pit sale.

Our first encounter with the third disc!

We head to Hotel Schlumpfen to confront Onyx.

Please come in.

Who are you, that you know I am Onyx?

Then you know I no longer deal with the Company.

I have no knowledge of such a transaction.

It helps here to remember a detail from Onyx’s file. I’ll include it to refresh our memory.

Jammu is the right threat to make here.

Cooperate, or I send the Indian government into Jammu.

It seems I have little choice.

OK, no need for threats. The deal is at midnight tonight. We are to meet at the Schärfenstahl plant, in the industrial sector. I am to give them the password, and they will give me the pit.

French vanilla. Procat looks after its own. There will be backup there. I would not entertain thoughts of gunplay with them if I were you. They will be prepared for such actions.

If we threaten Onyx with action against Chamba, he gives us a false password: Blackjack Ace.

Freeze. I’m gonna have a look around.

Here’s another flashback from our files on Onyx. He always carries handcuffs.

Let’s make good use of them.

If we choose to leave without restraining Onyx, he’ll tip off our contact and blow the sale.

Cuffed and with a sock in his mouth, Onyx won’t be able to disrupt our plan.

We have two options to recover the pit. If we had chosen the wrong threat, or left Onyx unrestrained, the Talk option would not be viable. Let’s start by trying to shoot our way out of this mess.

Thorn, it’s Holt. I’m standing in a control center at the National Reconnaissance Office. We’ve got you on GPS thanks to the transmitter in your PDA. You are officially a mouse in a maze.

OK, this is what we call a shadow op. Get in there, grab the pit, and get out in one piece. The Russians were nice enough to give us a tracking signature. The pit is the silver marker. Go for it.

Listen, don’t fire until you reach the pit.

This last bit is spectacularly bad advice from Holt. If there’s an enemy nearby, we won’t be able to move around the maze. And it only takes a couple of shots for Thorn to end up dead. So we will absolutely fire when necessary.

After wandering for a while, we come across Grendel and the pit.

Hesitation at this point leads to immediate death.

So it is possible to gun our way in, get the pit, and kill Grendel as a bonus. But since this game emphasizes intrigue and analysis, we’ll try to bluff our way forward.

Grendel takes animatedly in German to an old guy. Seems he’s worried that Raven hasn’t met him as they had planned.

Yeah, we got it right here. All you need is the right password and it’s yours.

If we had threatened Onyx with action against Chamba, we’d only have Blackjack Ace to go on. If we choose that or Toasted Fruit Loops, Grendel shoots Thorn. If we had left Onyx free, Grendel would know that Thorn is not Onyx and the shooting would commence. Luckily, we know the right password.

French Vanilla

Alles klar.

**Old guy hands over the pit**

Nice doing business with you. Make sure you let your people that there’ll be more where that came from.

And with that, we’re on our way. No messing about with guns, just a simple lie and we walk away with the pit. Much more civilized. For the record, I’ll be proceeding having chosen the talk path.

Please hold for the President of the United States.

Congratulations on a job well-done. The country and the world owe you a debt of gratitude. I’m still counting on you to nail this Harpsichord character.

We won’t be voting for that guy.

Outstanding work, Thorn. There’s no telling where this might have gone otherwise. I’ve explained the situation to the Chancellor; he’ll have a team waiting at the airport. They’ll pick up the pit. Now you can get back to the real mission – Harmonica.

And so we leave beautiful Germany and head back to Moscow.

**ringing phone**

It’s Harmonica. The alley across the street from the safehouse. Be there in one minute – no tails, no backup. You compromise me, and I’m gone. Just might kill you on my way.

Next time on Spycraft – The Great Game

Thorn and Harmonica have a showdown in a dark alley, and Thorn must decide how far he’ll go to stop an assassination.
