Part 44: Obong-Ni Ridge: Turn 19

Neither of my working computers work with PBEM files - the saves get corrupted somehow - so I need to wait for the old computer to get back from the shop (that was over 3 weeks ago so it shouldn't be that long).

However, if someone wants to post their own games in this topic, I'm perfectly alright with that.

Obong-Ni Ridge: Turn 19

Once agin, our turn has been reduced to firing with the only units safe from direct fire on the northern firebase. However, they are not so safe from indirect fire. I only just realised that one of the MMG Sections has been completely destroyed by artillery fire.

The explanation for this is simple enough; when a normal infantry unit takes losses, it is quite obvious because the unit icon changes immediately. An infantry unit with 8 men is very distinguishable from a unit with 6 men. This is not the case with heavy weapons teams, which use the same icon no matter how many losses have been sustained. This means machinegun teams have the tendency to take losses without the player realising, which causes alarm when a single kill removes the unit from play (as happened here).

Our HQ and a few other units are relocating to the rear lines. If the HQ unit is lost, rallying will be a lot harder, especially since Captain FENTON (not Fenton, FENTON) has a very good rally score.

Our last M20 Squad is out of AP rounds, so all we can do is suppress the enemy T-34 in the hopes of assaulting and destroying it next round.

More artillery falls down this turn, to the surprise of nobody whatsoever. The attack isn't as precise as last turn though, which is something.

However, the northern force has completely capitulated. There are some infantry outflanking to the north which should hold out for a turn or two, but we should expect to see the enemy assaulting the secondary line imminently.

Our fire support came in this turn, but I just don't care enough to make the obligatory screencap at this point. The fighters actually drove some people off though, so that's good.

There are about 6 or 7 turns left in the match. I expect the enemy to cross the ridge into our rear lines in about 2. However, It is entirely possible that they just can't overwhelm our secondary lines in that time, which will make it a victory of some bizarre sort.

I realised something interesting. You can reread this LP from the point where I start this mission, and watch as I gradually lose all hope. It's both interesting and very depressing.

As for the next mission, all of the units have been claimed except for the trucks and the FO Vehicle (which has been offered up to i shit trains).

However, like I mentioned, anybody who wants to make their own Steel Panthers related contribution to the topic (whether MBT or WWII series) is welcome to.
