Part 122: The End

Let's finish this!

I recommend just watching the whole final boss and ending sequence in this 25 minute video:

Watch the final boss & ending! / Baldurdash

There's no need to use people to destroy the Adephagos!

They're crucial. We'll make up the rest by turning the blastia cores to spirits too.
Every single core in the world!
And as a bonus, it'll put an end to the blastia culture that you hate so much. Not too shabby, huh?

Can you not believe that people can move forward and change?
Humans will not let something go once it is in their grasp.
So you won't listen... We will destroy the Adephagos our own way. Please, wait just a little longer.

Huh?
Will the aer be controlled by the Entelexeia? Will all life return to a time when nature ruled?
No...

For the convenience of humans. Nothing more.
Can't you think that the world might be growing?

...I would not presume to speak on the choices of the Entelexeia.

So you won't listen to us because we're humans?
You say you can't trust people so you just drop everything. Then when it's too late, you try to wipe them out?!
...Do you know what this tower is?

To destroy the Entelexeia!
!
To the ancients who did not recognize the threat of the blastia the Entelexeia, who attacked the blastia, were nothing more than a nuisance.
And the aer went out of balance, and the Adephagos appeared...
Only then did humans listen to the words of the Entelexeia. Our world has seen many sacrifices. Yet humans committed the same offence. And they will again. Those who eat away and ruin this world... Those who would change the world for their own continued existence... They are apostles of destruction greater than even the Adephagos.

Elucifur...
...So Khroma told you?

She listened to us, too, and became a spirit. So please, we can do this together...
...Enough.

I need not wait for your method. Once I complete this formula, the world will be saved.

As long as humans rule, they will commit the same offence time and again.

Even if we are hurt or stopped, we can still walk again as long as we don't give up!
She's right.

And unlike you, we haven't chosen this path on our own. Everyone decided on it.
Yeah! Going it alone might be tough...

I finally learned that we can walk together like that!
That may be sufficient for those who are connected to one another.

You all surely understand that.
It will be difficult, but that is reality. But they will take what changes, think, and change again. Both the people and the world.

I know this now. That's what it means to live.

But this old man wants to see what lies ahead for people in the next era. See how the fools change. For those who can't see them anymore.

...However our feelings for the world are no different. How odd.

The future we chose...what we see for the future...is different.
The future must be protected. If it is not, then destruction awaits.
We make the future. You trust the path you choose and create it.

Come!

Listen to the full conversation!

We're gonna kill the Adephagos, so stay out of the way!
This isn't a path we chose alone!
The Entelexeia, the Kritya... They've chosen the same path.
Grrr... Woof! Woof!
I have no reason to go along with your plan.

Could you be any more stubborn? Why won't you listen?!
We're trying to create a new future, so we don't have to repeat a terrible past.
We made this choice so humans and Entelexeia could move on together!
The Entelexeia will regret that decision, and humans will wish they had died.

I don't think anybody's gonna think that. Trust me.
I won't regret it, no matter what you say.
Our resolve runs deeper than that.

We will keep on working to bring this hope to our future.
Even if it means fighting for our lives.
Such a foolish conclusion. There is no longer any point in talking.

That's too bad.
I guess we have to fight.
I thought we could get you to understand.
I guess we can't change you.
It's not too late. C'mon, join us!
If you would just listen!
No more!

So here's Duke, the final boss of Tales of Vesperia. He's honestly not too hard.

He's got a couple fancy artes and can -- of course, he's a main villain in a JRPG -- teleport around the battlefield.

And yes, there's multiple forms. Two in fact.

The biggest pain when dealing with Duke is status effects.

He can inflict quite a few status effects on your party, both actual effects and stat debuffs.

His second form does this way more than the first.

Two of the most painful effects are Sealed Artes and Sealed Skills; I'm sure you can tell what they do. The latter might even be exclusive to Duke, I'm not sure but I can't think of any other enemy that inflicts it.

Like all enemies, he goes down eventually.

You're pretty strong yourself.
Humph. How unfortunate. I wish I could walk together with you all a while longer. Perhaps we would have had a different encounter...

You stubborn bastard!

The best path for an enduring world is to return it to its natural state.

Listen to the full conversation!

Spirits? You fools. How could the Entelexeia agree to such an uncertain plan?
It's not uncertain! We did it! The Entelexeia became spirits!
Using the spirits to defeat the Adephagos is not a fantasy!

The world is trying to take on its natural form.
You're just clinging to the past!
Your memories of him bind you. I feel sorry for you.

All the people of the world decided on this together.
So get out of the way!
So I am the only stubborn one? No. I am not mistaken. I will use all my power to eliminate your misguided purpose.

So his second form is... yeah I have no idea what's up with that design.

I mean final bosses in JRPGs looking ridiculous is nothing new but still.

Apart from that, this second fight isn't really very different from the previous.

He gets a couple new artes and dishes out more status effects more frequently, but apart from that, more or less the same.

Weak here (that pill icon and the circles over your head) is also kinda nasty as it halves your Max HP -- but your current HP stays proportional to your maximum!

One of his new artes is a Mystic Arte.

It's pretty damn powerful.

But thankfully, it can't actually kill you.

Alright, let's finish this.

Savage Wolf Fury (and as far as I know only this Mystic Arte, nothing else) gets an extension here, and only if it deals the killing blow. That's because that's this battle's secret mission: Dealing the killing blow with a Mystic Arte. Any works, but due to the extension it's of course much cooler with Savage Wolf Fury.

You get a very, very nice reward for the last Secret Mission.

Super Chain 3: Able to link altered to base artes.
Glory: Avoid staggering for any kind of attacks.

As you might be able to tell, Glory is broken as fuck.

Achievement/Trophy:

Secret Mission 23 / Secret Mission 25

Anyway, enjoy the ending!

But if Elucifur fought for humans during the Great War, then I don't think he'd want his friend to reject humanity.
Elucifur's wish...

I'm on it.

Okay!
Understood.

The game cuts away to Flynn here, who seems to be in Capua Torim.

Watch the credits! / Baldurdash

The credits feature a ton of neat drawings of characters from the game. Here's a full set of them.

Estelle has written down the story of the game, aptly titled Tales of Vesperia.

This is clearly the best image in the credits.

Thanks for the great English voice acting!

And for the English translation, too!

Achievement/Trophy:

Defeated the Adephagos

And that's it for the main story!

Next time we'll take a look at some additional stuff regarding the final scenes and ending here, and after that it's all sidequests all the time!
