Part 22: Chapter 15 – A stroll through Braad

Chapter 15 – A stroll through Braad

Welcome back. Today we head into Braad which ist he easiest map of the game and as such doesn’t offer any experience for our troops, which is why I took the liberty of just deploying random people short of the two, Mahter and Attrom, that are required.

This map is called the Oasis of Braad.

Our objective in this map is to reach the mansion in the top right corner. This map offers the chance to teach people the different Fighter skills for 7000G. This is too expensive for such a situational skill. The only skill that might be worthwhile to purchase down the line would be Anti-Evil, whcih let’s you do effective damage against monsters.

: I suppose we should go talk to the marquess first. We don't want them to think we're thieves.

: Look at the sky, it's so clear and blue... The birds must love it.

: Hey, Attrom, you said you used to live here, right?

: Yeah...

: What's with that face? Aren't you happy to be back?

: Happy? How can I be happy without Renee!?

: Geez... I was just asking. That's why we're gonna go the Leda to find the Orb of Resurrection, right? I know you miss your sister, but why don't you lighten up for once!

: Oh... Look at the pretty flowers... Don't pick them, Holmes. You'll hurt them...

: Yeah, yeah. Sigh...

: We will wait here at our mansion for their arrival.

: Yes, my lord.

: But miss, mine are bigger than Frau's, aren't they?

: Huh? ...Your what is?

: Hey, barkeep. You might want to close your shop for today. A band of thieves just wandered into the city.

: Really? Oh, my. Well, girls, you heard him. You should go on home. I'll be closing for the day.

: Sun... This is a big chance! We're more than a match for a bunch of thieves.

: Are you sure? Shouldn't we let Lord Leon know first?

: We'll report to him later. Come on, let's do it! We'll surprise everyone if we can drive away the thieves from the city. The other knights won't treat us like kids any more, either.

: Yeah! Okay, I'll do my best!

: La-la-... Oh, lord bishop. Good morning.

: Oh, no, you don't. Have you finished your morning chores?

: Chores? Uhm... We have chores?

: You've heard from the other sisters, haven't you? Morning prayers, sweeping the temple floor, preparing breakfast, and tending to the wounded. You have no time to be wandering off singing!

: "But I love to sing. I really want to be a singer. But papa said that he wouldn't let me choose a dangerous job like a singer. He told me to become a priest and help people. But a singer is wonderful job. I can help people by cheerin them up with my songs. Don't you think so, lord bishop?

: Well... One cannot judge another by his occupation. I don't think that singing is the horrible profession it is sometimes made out to be.

: Really? Then you can persuade papa! I'll become a singing priest. I want to travel around the world and let people everywhere hear my songs.

: Hm... Very well. If that is your dream, then I shall not be stopping you. But now that you've chosen your goal, you must push through until you reach it. Understood?

: Yay! I'll do my best!

: But I cannot let you go alone. Wait a little longer. When someone I can trust comes by, I will ask him to take care of you.

Her eis our terrifying opposition fort his map: Two young girls. As you probably have guessed both are recruitable. We talk at leisure about them in the character information at the end of the chapter.

We use the move-dance-talk shuffle with Mahter and Plum to start recruiting our new blood into our cause.

: I'll explain later. Now, withdraw your blade at once! Fighting isn't a game, Frau. What if you were hurt!?

: Yes... Mahter...

: And tell your friend to stop fighting as well. You're being an inconvenience to everyone. Understood?

And Frau immediately recruits Sun.

: Yes, we should. Lord Leon will be mad at us, too... Sigh... Maybe we should have stayed put...

Congratulations, you have conquered this map. Let’s see if there is something else on this map before visiting the mansion.

Attrom visits the curch to recruit a songstress.

: Hm... I see... So that is what happened... This is a terrible loss to us all. Lady Renee was like a goddess to this city...

: ...This never would have happened if Meriah hadn't run off. All because of her selfishness...

: I'm sure Meriah had her reasons as well. You must not let anger cloud your love for others, Atrom. Lady Renee would be disappointed.

: Yes...

: Atrom, I want to ask you a favor if you are going out to look for Lady Renee. This girl is one of our acolytes, but she insists that she wants to travel the world. Could you take her along on your travels? Come, Lyria, you should ask him yourself as well.

: La-la-la...

: She's a little strange... All right, I'll ask Holmes and see what he has to say.

And now we’ve got another priest. Singing restores some Hp and has a slight chance of refreshing a unit. Other than that she is literally like every other priest although she gets a nice staff prior to the next chapter.

That was rude. This is another secret shop. Holmes group doesn’t have a Guild Key so we have to wait to reunite with Runan to access this one. It sells Brave Weapons which are obviously quite nice to maximize.

Sure I gamble with the power of savestates

Didn’t even need them. You can win up to 200.000G from this guy so in case we lack some funds we’re going to return to him from time to time to fill out our treasury.

This guy her eis a smith and lets’S us forge certain equipments. I will return here off-screen to forge some stuff we can crete by now like the Dragon Arrow (Mt 17, 2-3 range bow) a Thief Sword or a Repair Staff. Unfortunately he only creates his stuff in a pre-determined order so the forging has to wait till I meet with Runan or find a shop to buy a Magic/Silver Shield.

There is one last event, that triggers if you visit the bar Sun and Frau came from with Plum. It can be quite annoying since there are literally no indication that there is such an event. Well it is alluded to in Map 2 when you first recruit Plum but I think most will have forgotten by now.

: All right, I was just asking. No need to bite my head off. Do you have a grudge against milk? Anyway, you look a lot like Lan, you know?"

: Huh? Do you know my mother?

: Oh, so you're Lan's daughter, are you? She used a very popular dancer around these parts, beautiful and elegant. She had a tragic past, but a young noble fell in love with her. After that, she looked so happy that everyone was envious.

: A young noble...?

: That's right. But after when the civil war broke out in Saria, he was sent out to fight. Lan was waiting here in Brahd for his return, but their mansion was attacked by bandits, and she was taken away. We haven't heard of her since, so we were worried. But since you're here, she must be safe, right?

: My mother... She passed away from illness five years ago...

: Oh... Poor thing. I'm sorry... I really am...

To finish this map we’re finally visiting the mansion. The scene here skips directly to the world map but luckily I still have a scrip at hand.

: Lord Leonheart, our guests have arrived.

: Are you the leader of the warriors? I understand that a few of my subordinates attacked you on the way. My apologies.

: Nah, it was no big deal. Don't worry about it. So you're the lord of this city?

: Braad has no lord. This city used to belong to Archduke Ahab, a cruel man who ruled over his people with oppression. The people overthrew him in a rebellion, and now, Braad is self-governed by its citizens.

: A free city, huh? Then who are you?

: I am the lord of the neighboring land of Selba. I aided the people of Braad in their rebellion against Ahab, but the Empire invaded my land in my absence. The Principality of Selba now lies under Imperial rule.

: Hm, sounds like you've got quite a mess on your hands. Well, it's got nothing to do with me, though...

: Doesn't it? I happen to be very grateful to you.

: Huh? What did we ever do to get thanks from you?

: Defending Brahd is no easy task, with enemies from all directions surrounding us. But you have defeated one of them for us. How could I not thank you?

: Are you talking about the brigands in Oaks?

: Of course. Whenever my knights would leave the city, the brigands would flock to Brahd like hungry hyenas. They know that I cannot travel out far enough to attack Oaks.

: All right, I see. But you still don't have to thank us. We weren't fighting for you, after all.

: Ha... You're an interesting man. What is your name?

: Holmes. We're what's left of the Granadan pirates, but we're up on land right now to take care of some business. So, Lord Leon, who're the other three enemies surrounding you? Clue us in.

: Archduke Ahab's army resides in an old Sarian castle to the east. Ahab still hasn't given up reclaiming Braad. To the southeast waits an Imperial legion led by Count Carnel. He won't miss a chance to invade, and is consistently watching us for openings. Finally, monsters are attacking us from Mt Mermel in the north. We normally would hold them back at Fort Ligria, but only a small number of Aerial's troops reside there. They are exhausted from the endless packs of Orps that come down from the mountain.

: Mt Mermel, huh? All right, Lord Leon. We'll take care of the monsters. We were gonna go look for some treasure there, anyway.

: You have my gratitude. I know I should provide some of my troops, but...

: I'll go, Uncle Leon. I probably won't get to be in any battles even if I stay here.

: Hm... Very well. Fighting Orps wouldn't be too dangerous. Besides, I doubt I could stop you at this point...

: Really!? Thank you, Uncle Leon!

: Sun, Uncle Leon is letting us go! You're coming, too, right?

: Of course, Frau!

: ...... Damn... More kids? I'm not a babysitter, you know...

And this is it for this map. It’s quite short and no problem at all. Next time we head for Mt. Memel and fight fucking pain in the asses. Damn Eyeballs

Sun is pretty much like Narron. She comes a bit into the game and starts out weak but has a fantastic promotion (although it’s still not Narron’s) and learns great skills including Elite. Her growths are slightly weaker in the strength and HP department than Narrons but are better in everything else (30% more skill growth and 15% higher speed growth for instance). If you take the time to train her, she and Narron usually have you covered on the horseback front.

Sing (starting)

Lyria is a basically a worse Plum. Instead of getting Dance she gets Sing which personally I think is inferior since healing can be done by staffs and is more potent and the additional turn triggers far to seldom to rely on. While grwoths and stats aren’t that important for priest characters in this game it still might help to survive a hit and in that department she got slightly better growths than Plum. She may not outheal them due to her horrid Mag growths but at least she got a decent Speed and Luck growths to build some avoid. Her personal staff is quite nice though as we’ll be seeing next chapter.

Frau can be used as a substitute for Mahter. She comes with almost the same stats and has better growths (sans luck). It hurts that she has neither Gale nor Elite but that doesn’t make her a bad unit. However she falls into the same problem that all Pegasus rider fall as there are not enough Promotion items out there. We got 2 surefire Promotion items for a total of 4 Riders and the other Dragon Flutes rely on a 1% chance to get and as such are unobtainable without some serious masochism. Usually you will hand out one Flute to Sasha and the other doesn’t come until ¾ into the game meaning they tend to fall behind as well. Still you can train her in Holmes route and decide at a later point whether you want to use her over one of the others.
