Wing Commander III & Standoff

Part 102: Torgo System, Epsilon Sector, Mission 1 (Gameplay)

Well, it would have been Thursday, if somebody hadn't phoned up and offered me a job (sort of). That pushed it into Friday, and that's Trackmania deadline day so it was sort of a bit of this and a bit of that...

2nd September 2669, Torgo System (Mission 1), Epsilon Sector
TCS Victory

With Kilrathi fighters closing in on the vulnerable TCS Behemoth, Admiral Tolwyn scrambles the Victory's wing to intercept.

Kills this mission: 8, which is not all that great when you consider there are 28 enemies in the mission, but then again, there are also 5 friendlies, and there's a lot of occasions where there's 2-3 fighters firing at a single target and I don't think I get *any* of those kills. Aditionally, 6 Arrows is 48 missiles. So there's quite a lot of enemy ships that don't last very long in this mission. Could I have made better use of my own missiles? Yes. How? Not sure. Overall I think my flying was pretty decent.

And, yeah, I lost Flint again. That's probably about as often than I remember seeing her eject in every other playthrough I've made of WC3. I think this one pretty much had to be a collision since she didn't even report being in trouble beforehand but just ejected. Ah well, that's what wingmen who aren't at risk are for.

Ship of the day:
There's practically no information available about the Behemoth, so that won't be appearing on ship of the day. Instead, let's take a look at the other one of the Victory's escorts.

Tallahasse-class

Class: Cruiser

Cruise Velocity: 150 kps
Max Velocity: 200 kps
Maximum Yaw/Pitch/Roll: 5/5/5 degrees\second
Weapons: 12x dual laser turret, Capship missile launcher
Shields: 3000 cm durasteel equivalent all sides
Armour: 1000 cm durasteel equivalent all sides
Fighter complement: One squadron
(Image from CIC, as per usual when theirs is vaguely competent).

Official Strategy Guide: makes no mention of Confed capital ships

I say: The TCS Ajax in theory has more guns and better shields than the Sheffield or Coventry, but it lacks the big anti-matter gun on the front. It doesn't really do much useful throughout the game, only really showing up in a fight against a Kilrathi ship once, and my recollection is that it doesn't do anywhere near as well as the Sheffield and Coventry do against their equivalents.

Total kills (Wing Commander III): 19 missions / 168 kills
Total kills (this thread): 45 missions / 533 kills
Total kills (including previous thread): 155 missions / 1448 kills

Next time on Let's Play Wing Commander:
Allowing the player to choose a fighter which is physically incapable of completing the mission? Only in the next update!

What happens if your wingman dies?

I want to say, no scene with Rachel and the game skips to their funeral, but it's so long since I've had it happen that I'm not sure.
