Wing Commander III & Standoff

Part 142: Kilrah System, Kilrah Sector, Mission 2 (Gameplay)

I think it's apparent that the writing didn't quite get lined up properly for the final mission. I think what's supposed to happen is that the massed Confederation fleet in Hyperion serves as a distraction while the Victory sneaks its cloaked Excaliburs through at Freya, but somewhere along the line the writers decided they wanted to have the Victory join up with the Fleet and forgot why it was supposed to be separate in the first place.

I'd also like to point out that we don't actually have a cloaking device. I mean, in the novel Lancelot Flight did and the Excaliburs hit the jump point cloaked, but I can't cloak my Excalibur yet. I will be able to for the final mission, but that's all.

24th September 2669, Kilrah System (Mission 2), Kilrah Sector
Covert Ops Theta Class II Refuelling Depot

Lancelot Flight penetrates deeper into the Kilrah system, looking to meet up with the Temblor bomb at a second clandestine refuelling depot.

There are no pre-mission cutscenes.

(Yeah, I'm being lazy and using the same briefing image twice, since there's no pure wireframe segment of this briefing).

(and no, I didn't collide with that Dralthi. But probably only because the cannon fire you can also see in the shot blew it up.)

Kills this mission: 19

Slightly fewer enemies than last time, but they're less strung out and there's more sequences where your wingmen run off to deal with capital ships, so it's much harder than the previous mission - almost as hard as I'd say the penultimate mission ought to be, really. And as I said last time, it's scripted that we lose our second wingman if we don't send him/her back before the final engagement. Unless we never had one at all, of course, but that's for next time. So, yeah, as foreshadowed in previous conversations with Jade, Maniac's dead now. This has absolutely zero effect on anything since there's no more cutscenes except the final one (which he's not in anyway) and he'll be magically resurrected for WC4 (in canon I believe he's shot down in Kilrah's upper atmosphere, having given Thrakhath a couple of IR missiles to think about first. The Kilrathi pull his ejection seat in and have apparently not got around to killing him before their planet goes boom).

Ship of the day:
Next mission!

Total kills (Wing Commander III): 35 missions / 421 kills
Total kills (this thread): 61 missions / 787 kills
Total kills (including previous thread): 169 missions / 1694 kills
