New units commanded for the glory of the Soviet Union:

quote:

Soviet heavy artillery - 2S7 "Pion": This 203mm self-propelled piece is in a class of its own, unmatched by any other vehicle constructed since. It can shoot its massive rounds up to 47 km away, and relocate to a new firing position by the time of impact on target.

Compared with NATO/US artillery it has both advantages and drawbacks. Since it fires a single round as opposed to a steady stream of rockets, its much harder to locate and counter. On the other hand, the slower rate of fire allows an enemy to evacuate the impact area before additional rounds hit.

The Pion can deploy smoke-shells, covering a large area in smoke akin to the smaller smoke-launchers on tanks.

quote:

Soviet heavy attack helicopter - Mi-24 "Hind": Instantly recognizable, the Hind is one of the lasting images of Soviet military might. Large, bulky and heavily armored, the Hind has sometimes been compared with a flying tank rather than a helicopter.

Like all the other heavy helicopters, the Hind has an automatic cannon for infantry and dumbfire rockets for vehicles and armour. AT-5 "Spiral" guided missiles provide additional punch against heavy armor.

quote:

Soviet scout helicopter - Ka-25 "Hormone": Originally a naval anti-submarine helicopter introduced in the early 70's, the Ka-25 serves the same recon role as the other scout helicopters, and carries the same IR-scanner capable of seeing into buildings and through smoke clouds.
