Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia saw its debut in North America in early 2007. It told the story of one Lyner Barsett and his friends and their quest to save the Sol Ciel, the Tower of Eoria, from an entity known as Mir. Mir wished to wipe out humanity in order to create a 'utopia' for Reyvateils, a race of artificial humanoids capable of using the power of Song to craft magical effects. Lyner and company managed to convince Mir, actually a hugely powerful Reyvateil from an earlier age, that humanity had changed since her time, and Sol Ciel became peaceful once more.

Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica, is set not terribly long after the first game. The setting of this game is the Tower of Frelia, the land of Metafalss. A land where all yearn for the paradise of Metafalica...

Ar Tonelico II is in most regards a substantial improvement over the original. The gameplay itself is far more interesting, with some rhythm game aspects to combat that fit very well with the musical themes of the series. The game features a whole new set of Hymnos tracks, including a much wider variety of musical styles. It often lampoons the subculture that spawned it with comically over the top innuendo, and for a jrpg the story is actually pretty decent. There are on occasion odd localization issues and has at least one serious crash bug, and less of it is voiced than the original owing to space concerns (the game is substantially larger and at least half again as long length wise compared to the first).

It's also still helluva Japanese.
