Okay, so what to say about Hyperdimension Neptunia? So, it’s got a laundry list of game companies associated with it, for one. The main producers were Idea Factory and Compile Heart, with Gust, Nippon Ichi, and Sega also being associated with it. It’s an RPG about video games, and most of the characters are designed to evoke either the aesthetic of one of the producing companies or the design of one of the current generation of consoles. It’s also completely batshit crazy, with a plot resembling a fever dream.

So if you are familiar at all with Idea Factory games, they are generally pretty bad because Idea Factory consistently shows they do not know what the fuck they are doing with respect to making a video game that is particularly interesting to play. I’m not going to say that this is not one of those bad games, but what I will say is that it has a lot of good ideas that were then refined into the far superior ‘sequel’, Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 (which I intend to LP after this). So why show off the first game? Well first it’s full out trippin’ balls crazy, there’s something to be said for that. It’s actually pretty fun too when you understand all the weird, obscure systems and how to take advantage of them, which I do. Also, you won’t appreciate how playable and fun the ‘sequel’ is if you don’t see some of the bullshit I have to put up with in this game.

That’s all that needs to be said, I think. It’s time to light this candle.

Cast (in order of appearance):


Histoire:
A book which provided us with some exposition. Voiced by Stephanie Sheh.


Green Heart:
CPU of Leanbox. Rather nice, if somewhat condescending. Voiced by Tara Platt.


Vert:
The human form of CPU Green Heart.


Black Heart:
CPU of Lastation. Seems kind of insecure and very competitive. Voiced by Erin Fitzgerald.


Noire:
The human form of CPU Black Heart.


White Heart:
CPU of Lowee. Extremely rude and prone to using foul language. Voiced by Wendee Lee.


Blanc:
The human form of CPU White Heart. Is not particularly nicer in this form than when she's transformed.


Purple Heart:
CPU of Planeptune. Was defeated by the other three CPUs and cast out of Celestia. Voiced by Melissa Fahn.


Neptune:
The human form of CPU Purple Heart. Got struck in the head when cast out of Celestia and doesn't remember much of, well, anything. Voiced by Melissa Fahn.


Compa:
A nursing student from Planeptune. Pulled Neptune from a crater. Voiced by Cristina Vee.


IF:
Some weird girl we met in a dungeon. We don't know much about her. Voiced by Kate Higgins.


Gust:
A wandering alchemist we met in Lowee. Voiced by Cassandra Morris.


Nisa:
A heroine of justice. Voiced by Michelle Ruff.


???:
A weird witch looking person who attacked us out of nowhere. Seems to know Neptune. Voiced by Laura Post.


RED:
A girl IF ran into. Has unilaterally declared IF her wife.


5pb:
A popular singer. IF ran into her and has since made friends with her.
