The surface of the Kado-Guchi river seemed to boil as Mechwarrior Zenyatta Delaurel brought her Gargoyle up a concrete berm. The river banks had long ago been paved to resist erosion, and the heavy bridges spanning the Kado-Guchi’s two-kilometer width were heavily reinforced though the river seemed calm and slow. Like all large rivers, the Kado-Guchi was placid most of the year; save when the spring thaw sent torrents of water rushing down its massive girth.

The Gargoyle broke the surface of the river like an ancient, monstrous leviathan, water pouring down its hideous, manlike features. Water sluiced down the front of the Gladiator’s thin, heavily-armored transpex cockpit. Zenyatta barely noticed past the circle-vision display hovering between her and her window to the outside world. Unlike many Clan `Mechwarriors, she preferred thermals to magnetic resonance imaging. In a city, however, both were problematic. Imperial City, she noted, would be particularly irritating.

With a hiss of frustration, she toggled to visible light—it made targeting more difficult, perhaps, but the city would simply be a maze of steel under magscan; and the black asphalt, black glass, and black obsidian towers simply absorbed heat. Under thermals, the entire city was a wash of indecipherable colors. She couldn’t have picked a `Mech out of the visual garbage if its reactor were melting down. Then again, cool as the Clan Omnimechs ran, her Clan’s enemies would have even more difficulty finding her.

“Any sign of infantry, quiaff?” Star Colonel Kelso Cooper asked as his Hellbringer burst from the water behind her.

“Neg, Star Colonel,” she replied.

“As I predicted,” Khan Seidman growled, “they have all dug into the hills with the `Mechs. The city proper is defended only by whatever forces Takashi Kurita has held in reserve. Come, `Mechwarriors: these Draconis Combine soldiers cower in fear of us. Let us teach them they are not safe, even in the heart of their own capital!”

“Seyla,” Star Captain Nasrullah’s deep bass rumbled. More Elemental than `Mechwarrior, he barely fit in his ancient Kingfisher’s spacious cockpit. It was one of the few `Mechs with enough space to fit his massive bulk, even though the aging design was considered subpar by current Clan standards.

Nasrullah was something of an enigma among the Hell’s Horses; though he’d tested well, he’d simply never won enough recognition to be considered for a bloodname. At thirty-six years old, this was probably his last chance to make a name for himself. Zenyatta smiled, for she’d had no such trouble. At only twenty-three, she was one of the youngest bloodnamed members of her Clan. She’d earned recognition early when she’d personally blunted a DCMS flanking maneuver which would’ve potentially annihilated two full stars of Clan `Mechs. Her factory-new Gargoyle had been nearly totaled; but Clan `Techs worked miracles given enough time. They’d had to make more difficult repairs with fewer resources.

“Trothkin, let us teach the Inner Sphere precisely what Clan Hell’s Horses can do,” she commed enthusiastically. “We were bred for battle, Quiaff? Let us show the heir to the traitorous House Kurita a fight like no other!”
