Matsukaze’s Gargoyle shook as it weathered fire from the enemy Phoenix Hawk. He paid it no mind, his board was clear of failure warnings anyway, and its lasers lacked the power to really penetrate his thick armor. His return fire was hardly devastating, but his heavy lasers stripped tons of armor from the Phoenix Hawk’s legs. Apparently deciding better of their makeshift duel, the ‘Hawk took to the sky and vanished down the next side-street.

His `Mech seemed to vibrate as a storm of SRMs streaked past him. Such a shot would normally be risky, but guided by Kelso Cooper’s Streak systems the missiles simply moved to avoid his `Mech. They swarmed the crippled Kurita Jenner, blasting its duck-shaped body apart in a hail of metal shrapnel that shattered windows. Matsukaze watched his compression strip with interest as Nasrullah’s Kingfisher ate the distance between their two `Mechs. The Inner Sphere probably found the ninety-ton machine frighteningly fast for its size and bulk, but Matsukaze wasn’t impressed by Nasrullah’s handling.

He was still watching Nasrullah’s advance when the Kurita Panther fired its arm-mounted PPC and caught his `Mech square in the head. The grinning skull warped under the particle stream, the heavy ferro-fiberous plating blistering then blackening into a scar that ran from the left eye to the `Mech’s chin. The heavy armor plating covering his cockpit ran like molten glass then breached in an instant, filling his cockpit with fire. Matsukaze cried out involuntarily as the tail end of the stream washed over the left side of his body, blistering his skin and blinding him as the his neurohelmet glass shattered. Within the confines of his helmet, his close-cropped hair caught fire for an instant before a blast from his cockpit fire-control systems dampened everything; the nonreactive dust extinguishing the flames in an instant before a blast of compressed air from the storage tanks in his `Mech’s chest blew it all away.

“Why will you not die?!” the ilKhan demanded over the comms. It took Matsukaze a moment to realize that his leader, the master of all the Clans, was not speaking to him.

He shook his head, probing his blistered face as he kept his staggering Gargoyle on its feet. He returned his attention to his circlevision strip, watching as the twin heavy autocannons that made up the bulk of the Kingfisher’s armament spat death squarely at his `Mech’s back. The shots missed by only a scant few meters. The shots caught the offending Panther square in the chest, and the machine crumpled as its body disintegrated under Nasrullah’s onslaught.
