Corporal Hector Hallas breaths came short and sharp as his Valkyrie drifted almost lazily back towards the ground. Hed hung himself out a touch higher and longer than he normally liked to lay a flight of LRMs towards the enemy Wolfhound. Hed wanted a shot at that fast Medium, but his targeting computer hadnt been able to pick out its outline past the thin, fragile trees and the bulk of Zanes Hammer. The Hammer was a new design, and intended to work in tandem with the new Anvil.
Hallas liked the look of the little Hammer, it had the range to be a severe threat to any `Mech in its class, and enough speed to be a nuisance to anything faster. Of the Anvil, he knew little except that it ran extremely hot. The regiment had only a single Anvil theyd gotten in preparation for deployment orders against the Capellans. Orders which still hadnt done, and had left the Protectorate Iron Guard sitting on their thumbs in staging areas in the periphery with dozens of other front line units. He didnt get paid to question orders, but Zane felt the Captain Generals delay unusual. The Wolfhound ducked his flight of missiles expertly, its return fire spoiled by the motion. He touched down next to the big Griffin, far closer to any enemy `Mech than he liked; but he had his orders; and he was a good soldier.
Just like we practiced, people, lion and wolves! Lieutenant Asker called as she opened fire on the Griffin. Shots scoured its armor as Company Commander Chatzis lance engaged the Griffin as well, but the slab like `Mech weathered the assault with surprising grace. Twisting at the hips to spread out the damage, the Griffin spitted Chatzis own Shadow Hawk with its lasers. Hallas fist glanced from the Griffins shoulder armor as the Griffin swung its arm in a harsh backhand, Askers Hermes danced away from hastily-aborted kick.
Lieutenant, look out! Gryphon called, hed been drawing back to slam his Spiders fists into the Griffins back; but instead planted both feet and shoved trying to throw it off balance. Finally shaken, the Griffin staggered forward, arms pinwheeling as the pilot struggled to maintain his balance on the sloped ground. Already midway through a punch, the Griffins hand swung out of line with the Hermes chest then slammed down on top of the little `Mechs domed head. The transplex and ceramet cockpit crumpled as the Griffins hand closed, using the Hermes to steady itself as it staggered forward. A moment later, Hallas was blinded by dust as the Griffin triggered its own jets and leapt clear of the tumbling Hermes.
Lieutenant, No! Gryphon wailed, the comms distorted badly by his volume. No!
