“Primary targets are the Griffin and Commando,” Lieutenant Chatzi called. “The Commando’s got a ton of firepower, but doesn’t have the armor to take hits. Knock it down and we’ll eliminate almost a quarter of the enemy lance’s firepower.”

“This is for Lycoris, you assholes!” Private First Class Stavros Andreou growled, spinning his swift Cicada about on its heels. His torso swiveled as he spun, and locked with a crunch of metal he didn’t hear so much as felt. His crosshairs pulsed with a gold dot as his DI computer traversed the Cicada’s shoulder-mounted PPC; and he felt a wave of exultation and heat both as his primary armament caught the enemy Commando square in the back. It staggered, but didn’t fall, instead firing a barrage of SRMs at a target Stavros couldn’t see.

“If we’re going after the lightly armored ones first,” Sergeant Golde grumped, “we should make the Clint our next primary target. It’s got almost as much armor as that walking gun we took out.”

Stavros grinned, but his expression fell as that bizarre medium leapt from the woods on jets of fire. “Shit! Lieutenant! I think that damned unknown is—”

The enemy medium’s strange, short-barreled PPC cut loose. If Stavros hadn’t seen it in action, he’d have sworn the weapon was suffering a malfunction—instead of the graceful blue-white particle stream of his own PPC, the enemy `Mech’s seemed to lose cohesion almost immediately, spreading out in a shower of particles that scoured the Shadow Hawk’s arm. At least the weapon itself didn’t appear to have the best range; but that was small consolation when the enemy pilot seemed content to use his superior mobility to drop in behind any `Mech he chose and scour its rear armor.

As if to add insult to injury, the short blade attached to the enemy `Mech’s wrist snapped out and slammed against the Shadow Hawk’s rear armor. It didn’t penetrate, as far as Stavros could tell, but a blow like that would’ve dented the armor badly. Stavros expected the tech crews to be pissed when they made it back.
