“This may have been a mistake,” Reece Collier mumbled as her Dervish cleared the treeline. Her Dervish shook like a ragdoll in a tornado as an enemy PPC stripped her right arm to its ferro-titanium bones. With a loud crack her cockpit’s transplex windscreen cracked as a glancing hit from a laser superheated the composite plating. A lancing pain shot through Reece’s guts as her Dervish rocked under the blow.

“Damn it, I tore a stitch,” she hissed through gritted teeth. Her lips split into a grin, the path to her target was clear—at least until the first autocannon shell blew her remaining arm off at the elbow as a full lance of Davion JagerMechs opened fire. Great gouts of billowing smoke shot from massive vent systems built into the backs of each long-barreled autocannon. Her DI Computer screamed warnings as shell after shell rocked her airborne `Mech. Dropping her crosshairs over the barrel-shaped Sunfire, Reece used the last option remaining to her: she punched out, hoping her medium `Mech would score a hit without her guidance.

It’d been a disappointing day so far and, as the exploding ruins of her `Mech skidded across the airport tarmac and ground itself to a halt at the Sunfire’s feet Reece deployed her parachute with irritable resignation. Of course her attack had failed. It was just that kind of day.
