Hastilude: Tactical Update 12



The Orion moved only slightly as it tracked El Hashim’s Albatross. The pilot hadn’t even flinched when he’d scarred the machine’s featureless head with the Albatross’s medium laser. It was nerve-wracking staring down a foe who not only seemed intent on his destruction but who also seemed completely apathetic about its own survival. The Clanner’s machine moved with an almost economic certainty, like the slow ascent of a guillotine blade.

The Orion opened fire with a terrifyingly methodical precision. The first laser hits triggered only minor alarms, but as the Orion unleashed the fury of its LRM-20 its torso rocked smoothly from side to side as the Clan pilot compensated for the inaccuracy he or she seemed to perceived in the launcher. There were no wild, corkscrew flights this time, no fratricide, and nothing went ballistic. The Orion’s most miniscule movements had all been timed to keep every single missile on target. El Hashim’s computer howled a warning, but the blistering heat radiating from somewhere beneath his feet was more than enough to spur him to action.

“El Hashim to lance,” he said coolly, “my engine shielding’s gone. Fight well. Doctor? You have command.”

The experienced Mechwarrior didn’t hesitate but reached behind his head and gave the ejection mechanism a hard tug. The next thing he knew, he was a hundred meters in the air—and his Albatross was exploding beneath him.
