“Something’s fishy here.” Ballista broadcast as the Shadow Hawk that’d fired on him broke off to harry someone else. “They’re not trying all that hard to let us go.”

“It’s getting too dark,” Hellhound replied. It was true enough, the raid at dusk had put the sun at their backs and they’d had more than enough light to see by, but even now the long shadow cast by his Cerberus had vanished. The fading sun had gone largely unremarked in the heat of battle, and his DI computer was having difficulty picking out more than murky details in visible light. Thermals would fare better, but all the same thermals didn’t do a great job picking out rocks or obstacles in a BattleMech’s path. Night fighting was dangerous, even with all the sensors at a BattleMech’s disposal.

A realization struck him, which he transmitted immediately. “Those `Mechs look like some technology testbed, not machines meant for actual combat. Fighting under controlled conditions is a lot different than the real thing. Did anyone see if any of they’ve got searchlights or other low-light gear?”

“Well, I’ll be damned,” Bad broadcast. “You’re right. I don’t think they do.”

Hellhound nodded grimly, “They’re putting on a show, nothing more. They’re not going to risk their machines by getting close enough for good shots and they’re not going to chase us into the badlands at night. We just need one last break-out and we’re all home free.”
