“Khan Moffat, can I trouble you for your targeting data?”

Dusk fought back a wave of disgust as she was addressed by her title and bloodname. It wasn’t unusual among spheroids, she knew, but it was insulting nonetheless. Equally insulting was the request for her targeting information. She could’ve finished the enemy Warhammer without aid, but she knew that wasn’t the point. While Jeana Clay—the “Red Corsair”—technically had operational command, she differed to Colonel Kell’s advice in nearly all circumstances. He’d planned the entire operation, and had earned Dusk’s respect. Without bidding he’d cut their assault forces, neatly matching what her instincts told her was the ‘ideal’ minimum to avoid combat losses.

Unfortunately, his Archer was also one of the slowest machines on the field. Even with the minor tweaks Dusk’s technicians had made to the launchers and the advantage of Clan-made missiles his machine simply wasn’t fast enough to engage the enemy directly. At least, not yet. The Archer and BattleMaster would be the linchpin if the enemy had reinforcements, but none of the Great Houses had done any major military innovation since the fall of the Star League. With twelve `Mechs engaged Dusk doubted they’d have any more to spare. It was strange: if they’d been facing a Clan force, she’d have expected either two fewer or at least three more.

“Transmitting,” she let her tone of voice convey her irritation with the action, but she was a soldier. She’d obey an order even if it was an affront to her honor. A flight of LRMs exploded half-a-meter in front of the battered golden Warhammer. The pilot took a reflexive step backwards—just as Kell’s second flight came down. Nearly every missile struck it in the leg, pulverizing armor and tearing its ferro-titanium bones to bits. A flight of SRMs from Caesar’s six-pack launchers finished the job. The Capellans had proven tenacious—simply losing a leg wasn’t enough. She dropped her crosshairs over its form an instant before it fell and thumbed her secondary target interlock circuit.

A single shot from her lone small laser proved enough to burn through the last of the Warhammer’s weakened structural frame members. The right side of its chest imploded, the last of its battered frame proved more than enough to crush its fusion-powered heart.
