Part 12
12.Well. That could have gone better.
Anyways…the game’s not over yet by a long shot. We still haven’t written our way into someone’s heart – and the game does still offer us that chance. Here’s the thing, though. For all of its fantastic writing, there does seem to be certain…flaws…in the coding. You probably noticed some of it during the discovery of Sayori’s body, but the errors, uh…

…get worse. The top option – which used to be New Game – is now a jumbled mess. I forgot to get a screenshot, but our save files are still there. Unfortunately, the bizarre way this game handles Sayori’s suicide makes them inaccessible:
quote:
Error: Sayori.chr cannot be found.
Beginning a new game.

The game’s not lying – auto-deleting her game data is how the dev decided to handle her death. It’s weird at best, sloppy at worst. After the error message, all previous save files that contain Sayori are auto-deleted. Reinstalling the game and getting back to this point yields identical results, so I guess we’re stuck for it. Looks like we’re startin’ over, boys!

BGM: Ohayou Sayori!
…sort of. The version in-game is a little off-key and slightly distorted. I have no way of accessing it and can’t find it on YouTube, but the game files list it as “3g.ogg”.

Oh, Lord. This is a complete mess.
I see an annoying girl running toward me from the distance, waving her arms in the air like she's totally oblivious to any attention she might draw to herself.

You know, the kind of friend you'd never see yourself making today, but it just kind of works out because you've known each other for so long? We used to walk to school together on days like this, but starting around high school she would oversleep more and more frequently, and I would get tired of waiting up. But if she's going to chase after me like this, I almost feel better off running away.

The game crashes to black, then restarts a second later.

BGM: Ohayou Sayori!

Mornings are usually the worst, being surrounded by couples and friend groups walking to school together. Meanwhile, I've always walked to school alone. I always tell myself it's about time I meet some girls or something like that...but I have no motivation to join any clubs.
I'm perfectly content just getting by on the average while spending my free time on games and anime. There's always the anime club, but it's not like there would be any girls in it anyway...
…ah. So that explains it. Apparently getting the Sayori end changes around the opening and there was still some residual code or whatever left over. I hope this gets patched soon - sorry about that!
-----
BGM: Doki Doki Literature Club! (modified - no "Doki Doki!" at the beginning)

After I pack up my things, I stare blankly at the wall, looking for an ounce of motivation.

There really aren't any that interest me. Besides, most of them would probably be way too demanding for me to want to deal with. I guess I have no choice but to start with the anime club...
???: “...Mitayo?"

The game is having an, uh, interesting time loading characters.

Monika smiles sweetly. We do know each other - well, we rarely talked, but we were in the same class last year. Monika was probably the most popular girl in class - smart, beautiful, athletic. Basically, completely out of my league. So, having her smile at me so genuinely feels a little...

That sounds kind of...dull?
Oh, trust us, Mitayo – it has its interesting points.
In case it’s not obvious, Mitayo has no memories of what happened in our previous run.

”But mostly poetry!”

...Did Monika say "she"? Hmm...
GRILS

Will there be cupcakes?

Well, I guess I have no reason to refuse...besides, how could I ever refuse someone like Monika?

I mean, you could do both, but whatever.

I timidly follow Monika across the school and upstairs - a section of the school I rarely visit, being generally used for third-year classes and activities. Monika, full of energy, swings open the classroom door.

All words escape me in this situation. This club...is full of incredibly cute girls!!
I’m getting the strangest sense of déjà vu.

The girl with the sour attitude, whose name is apparently Natsuki, is one I don't recognize. Her small figure makes me think she's probably a first-year.

Yuri, who appears comparably more mature and timid, seems to have a hard time keeping up with someone like Natsuki.

I presume the end of this is ‘make cupcakes’.

The girls have a few desks arranged to form a table. Yuri walks to the corner of the room and opens the closet. Meanwhile, Monika and Natsuki sit across from each other. Still feeling awkward, I take a seat next to Monika.

”We used to have more members, but we just can’t seem to hang onto them for very long…”

That’s the spirit!
Natsuki reluctantly agrees. Such different girls, all interested in the same goal...Monika must have worked really hard just to find these two. Yuri returns to the table, carrying a tea set. She carefully places a teacup in front of each of us before setting down the teapot in the middle.

Many of the early scenes are nearly identical.
Nearly.

Insulted, Yuri looks away.

Yuri faintly smiles to herself in relief.

Considering how little I've read these past few years, I don't really have a good way of answering that.

I mutter quietly to myself, half-joking. Natsuki's head suddenly perks up - it looks like she wants to say something, but she keeps quiet.

What am I saying? I spoke without thinking after seeing Yuri's sad smile.

Yuri traces the rim of her teacup with her finger.

Yuri goes on, clearly passionate about her reading. She seemed so reserved and timid since the moment I walked in, but it's obvious by the way her eyes light up that she finds her comfort in the world of books, not people.

I desperately grasp something I can relate to at the minimal level. At this rate, Yuri might as well be having a conversation with a rock.

…there’s something off about this.

Natsuki's eyes dart over to me for a split second.

Natsuki averts her eyes.

We all sit in silence for a moment.

Natsuki and Yuri look quizzically at Monika.

This…didn’t go so well last time, but Mitayo doesn’t remember that.

Now that Yuri is vice president, she’s apparently taking the role seriously. This is an interesting shift of her character – she was never quite so gung-ho throughout our last run.

Now that we've reached the most important topic, I bluntly come forth with what's been on my mind the entire time.

You don’t even have cupcakes!
I lose my train of thought. All three girls stare back at me with dejected eyes.

The girls exchange glances before Monika turns back to me.

I...I'm defenseless against these girls. How am I supposed to make a clear-headed decision when it's like this? I would feel terrible for letting everyone down in this situation...and besides, the club itself seems pretty relaxed...so, if writing poems is the price I need to pay in order to spend every day with these beautiful girls...

One by one, the girls' eyes light up.

Can you promise me that no one will die? That was…kind of a bummer last time.

Monika looks over at me once more.

Can I really impress the class star Monika with my mediocre writing skills? I already feel the anxiety welling up inside me. Meanwhile, the girls continue to chit-chat as Yuri cleans up the tea set.

With that, I depart the clubroom and make my way home. The whole way, my mind wanders back and forth between the three girls:

Will I really be happy spending every day after school in a literature club? Perhaps I'll have the chance to grow closer to one of these girls...alright! I'll just need to make the most of my circumstances, and I'm sure good fortune will find me. And I guess that starts with writing a poem tonight...
That last picture seems incomplete.

BGM: Music fades out.

Well, this is new. At the end of each chapter, we unlock a special poem. There are quite a few of them in the game – more than there are actual scenes to view them in. Anything the game doesn’t show us will be covered in a post-game update.
BGM: Dreams Of Love and Literature

Alright, boyos, VOTE TIME. Before you vote, there are three things to keep in mind:
1) There WILL be differences from last time regardless of what we choose – some of them more prominent than others.
2) We have not seen the resolution to Yuri’s path.
3) We will cover any scenes not picked within the LP after the endgame.
With those caveats in mind – which group of poems would you like to go with? Group A, Group B, or Group C? Double votes for haikus. I realize that we’ve done haikus but they’re the only poems I like so if you don’t like it don’t write one, okay?
