Part 257: The Geography of Syrupleaf

Many maps were supplied of the area around Syrupleaf.

I hope the size of this image isn't a problem, but I couldn't make it any smaller and communicate the whole scale of the thing effectively.

This is a map of the entire world of Syrupleaf.

For those of you who thought it was strange that sand raiders would appear at the Syrupleaf fortress, and thought that they must be travelling a long way in order to do so, well, you're right.

They're crossing about half of the world just to get to Syrupleaf.

Their homelands are near the coast of the great inland ocean, and they travel into a jungle, then a forest, then through the only known pass of the southwestern mountain range, then across grasslands, rivers, and swamps, until finally reaching the great glacier itself in the far southwest corner.

Presumably Flat Banana is currently living somewhere near the coast of the central ocean.

These things have names you know. The sand raiders from the tribe The Confusion of Curiosity start by the ocean known as the Gulf of Citadels, on the banks of the great river Closterchance, along the Hills of Oak. They travel through the Emaciated Swamps and the Blighted Forrest, before venturing through The Twinkling Murk in the pass beneath the Spike of Famines. Their journey further takes them across the Regal Prairie, through the Forest of Corruption, a long slog through the massive swamp known ironically as The Modest Tactical Murk, dominated by the volcano The Fires of Snuggling, over the Roomyspicy river through the savage untamed Sunny Forests, over the cold Trussed Hills, skirting the frozen Desert of Ruins and the tundra The Climactic Jail-Frost, before they finally reach the glacier of Syrupleaf- the Angelic Ice, from which rise the great frozen mountain the fortress is carved into: the Point of Purging, which also plays host to the lair of the unspeakable abominations.

Basically my point is the location name generator is awesome.

Man whenever I see these sorts of map, I just get lost in imagining what's going on elsewhere in the world as the citizens of Syrupleaf make their stands
I totally dig the hell out of the Supersized british isle type thing in the middle of the sea, I want to explore it!
Ah, you mean the Continent of Blowing? It's pretty much uninhabited. Most of the civilizations are concentrated on the northern and eastern coasts of the Gulf of Citadels, though there are quite a few competing cities of Spawn in the north, and in the southern wastes (far to our east- some of those might also be frost giants, I'm too lazy to check). We have some rather close Spawn neighbors, as well as what I think is a pitiful dwarf city even further south than us, and a dying little elf settlement in the woods nearby too- otherwise the closest civilization is practically those sand raiders, who live by themselves near two rather large elven civilizations.

Fun with legends mode!

That seems to be 55 z-levels high volcano The Fires of Snuggling.

That is so cool.

This is really making me wish that there was a 'Civilization' mode to DF. It's just a shame you don't get to interact with or see much of the world when you're in Fortress mode.

I'm kind of tempted to grab the starting folder and embark at the foot of the volcano in the southeastern part of the ocean, and build a fortress inside the spire.

Good job YOTC! Lucky it wasn't more of a threat. Guess tehsid was feeling lazy.

*WARNING, MAYBE SPOILERS/NOT REALLY*
I've uploaded Syrupleaf to the DF Map Archive so people can jump in and have a look around the fortress. If anybody has objections to this, then let me know and I'll get rid of it. I thought it would be nice to be able to get an idea of how she looks!
(I put the spoiler stuff because somebody might see something that they didn't want too see yet... Just saving my arse basically)
