Part 68: Mission #5: Johnny Grenade, American
You know, the point of these wanzer builds isn't necessarily to make my life difficult, as crazy as that sounds.Mission #5: Johnny Grenade, American
Believe it or not, we're almost done with Yokosuka base, it only feels like we've been here forever.
Occasionally, just occasionally, this game's graphical engine looks decent despite itself.
: Then they're not expecting anyone.
: There should be a trailer waiting for us outside the base.
: This is the main gate. Unidentified wanzers confirmed. Request immediate backup.
: It's already on the way. Don't let them out of the base!
: Roger. All right, raise the barricade!
: Dude, they mean business.
: Reinforcements are probably on their way too.
: Don't worry. I've got it covered. I've requested support from the outside.
: That's awesome, Emma!
Seeing as she basically tricked us into committing treason, not so much.
: So, what do WE do?
: Well I've ordered them to destroy the barricade. We'll escape when it's destroyed.
Okay, another battle where you can win by getting to a designated spot, in this case, outside of the gate. At the moment, the gate is closed, and will remain so for a good while. You can also win by killing all enemies.
The first group of enemies is a Jinyo and a couple of APCs, not really much of a threat.
Close...
Eh, somewhat of a waste of a missile, if only because a hardblow would have worked just as well, but I'm trying to kill this group before reinforcements come, as I'll win the mission if, at any point, there are no enemies on the map.
Accuracy is a bit weird in Front Mission 3. For example, it's hard to hit APCs with missiles because they're considered smaller than wanzers. I don't know if that really conforms to how things work it real life, but, well, that's how it is.
Fuck. Okay, well, we'll do this the hard way then.
: Reinforcements!
: Where's our support?!
And those are apparently the magic words, as fires rain down from the heavens to destroy the barricade not long thereafter.
: From now on, you will decide the target area.
: I hear you.
: But there's only so much ammunition. Don't waste it!
Yeah, but the grenade-esque effect works on an area, so I might as well blow the ammo while there are more enemies rather than less. Also, I've never run out of ammo, so I'm not sure what she's talking about.
I decide to hedge my bets. I send Kazuki off to the outside of the gate, while I leave Ryogo and Emma to take care of the last ocuple of Jinyos. That way, even if Ryogo and Emma get killed, I still win the mission. Ryogo immediately rewards my faith in him.
Victory Pose!
Here's what the targeting for the support fire looks like. It's a damn big area, which would be great if you were apt to be fighting more than two or three enemies the entire time you had it.
Emma's out of missile, and I don't feel like burning a reload on a stage like this, so I send her in to punch the enemy to death.
And the mission ends when the last surviving Jinyo gets caught up in the support fire and dies a death most ignoble.
Probably would have done better on the scoring if I hadn't sent in Emma with her bare fist.
: It should be close by... I found it. Follow me.
: More enemies!?
: A transport helicopter? Well it doesn't seem to be coming after us.
: What are you doing? We don't have the time to stand around.
: You like to take charge, don't you?
Oh, Ryogo...I always thought Miho was the more entertaining character, and I can't say as if this performance is doing much to change my opinion.
: What're you babbling about? You want to get yelled at again?
No enemy could possibly track us down in our mighty stealth semi-trailer!
: This is the main gate. The target has escaped on a transport.
: Pursue them at once! But avoid direct combat. Capture them when they leave the city!
What, afraid of a little urban combat, Kuroi? You know, if you're going to be a pussy this entire game, you might as well kill yourself now and save me fifteen missions of aggravation.
: Roger.
Next Time: Miho was here...
