Part 23: 21:05 - 21:20 - The Final Withdrawal
Ordersquote:
2.I Squadron : Grey Hunter commanded Turn to 90, slow down British battle line.
Rostock : Support 2.I Squadron
9.V Half-Flotilla : Change course to the south
10.V Half-Flotilla : Bring my ships about to heading 000, and try shove torpedoes down the throat of the pursuing ship. We'll try and get the ship to either turn or sink.
13.VII Half Flotilla : Head for home.
21:06
2:I squadron makes a turn, knowing that they cannot outrun the enemy force, they turn to cross their T and slow them down, giving the rest of the fleet a chance to escape.
21:07
A shot strikes the Champion amidships, breaking her spine and starting her sinking.
A small measure of revenge is meted out onto the British, and the last eyes on our main fleet begins to settle to the sea floor.
21:09
The British line is finally forced to turn, their ships were making 20 knots, but now their speed is forced to drop as they engage our ships.
21:11
The distraction may not last for long however, as the Posen is hit and promptly explodes.
This leaves the Nassau alone, she is quickly struck four times by 12 inch shells and set ablaze.
We, bizarrely, also get a report that the Destroyer Liberty is sinking, as no one can see her, I'm wondering how anyone can know this.
21:15
The Nassau is struck by dozens of shells of 12, 13 and 15 inches, and a torpedo, but she stays afloat, and she does her job, the British battleships make a turn north - allowing our other ships to get further away into the growing darkness.
But this fire is to much, and she begins to sink.
21:18
The Nassau settles into the sea stern first.
21:20
These ships have done their job, as night proper falls, the British give up the chase, the ships lose contact with each other, and the battle of Jutland ends.
There will be a long debate over whether or not the Germans were really defeated, with both sides losing several ships, but the six hours thirty-two minutes of battle has changed little in the war.
