CHAPTER SIX: Social commentary
: Hello Avatar, how fare things?
: I need to get to Yew, but I don't know how.
You've saved
Britannia how many times?
: Of course, the Shrine of Justice is located there. Listen
carefully, and I shall tell you how to get to Yew. Take the road that
leads west out of town.
: At the first fork in the road, take the path that is not
marked. This path will take you to the north and through a valley.
: At the far end of the valley, there is a cave that will take
you through the mountains. Now, be careful when you go into this cave, for
it is filled with goblins.
: In fact, I have created a magical barrier to keep the goblins
in. I shall remove the barrier so that you may enter the cave.
: Go through the end of this cave and head west until you reach
the road. Follow the road north, and you will find the town of
Yew.
We could also use two potion bottles and get to Yew via the
castle maze.
: Have you any news that may be of use?
: As a matter of fact, I do. Do you remember some time ago, that
I told you that there was something wrong with the moons?
: Well, my astronomers now believe that the columns are greatly
affecting the moons.
: How so?
: It seems that the columns are pulling the moons out of their
orbits. Literally dragging them down towards Britannia if you
will.
: Good heavens!
: Yes, quite. If things are not changed, the moons will collide
into Britannia, and I don't need to tell you what will happen
then.
: All life in Britannia destroyed.
: Yes. I therefore needn't impress the need for expedience in
your quest.
: Goodbye my lord.
: Farewell, Avatar.
If the Guardian's plan feels at all
tacked on, that's because it was. Originally the Guardian was going to use
the columns to sap the planet's life energy and transfer it to
himself.
Oh well. A bad Ultima 9 is better than no Ultima
9.
I guess.
We're making progress!
The road to Yew takes us to this beautifully-rendered
forest area that looks nearly as good as Trespasser and
EverQuest.
There are few things of note. In a cave we find a
scroll of Meteorite.
At one point we are able to climb a trail into the
mountains.
At the end of the trail is a cave guarded by a Stone
Golem.
Hitting it with our sword causes it to bleed for some
reason.
Inside the cave is our fourth and, if memory serves,
final Glass Sword.
Hidden in this area are some other easter eggs. They were
probably hidden here because the developers didn't think anybody would
ever get this far.
One of the more major easter eggs is this
graveyard containing headstones for all of the people whose brains
hemorrhaged while playing the beta. At the end of the graveyard is this
rather prominent headstone. I don't know who Phyllis Jones is, but I don't
think one of her life goals was to have her name immortalized in Ultima 9.
