Part 115: Episode 4, Final Day, Trial: Lost and Found

Wow, apparently everyone was excited about this vote, despite it not being all that close; we eclipsed our last high for voters by 30%!

A useful detection device, indeed...

So then, I ask, where is that bullet now?

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

You... you don't mean!

I do.

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Objection

quote:

The failures this late in the game are short and to the point.

What exactly is that?
Sound: Realization

Er... Sorry.

Judge, if you would?

Right. Penalty!
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Damage 2

(I'm really not sure how I've managed to make it this far...)
Sound: Whoops

Mr. Wright, please reconsider your evidence.

Y-yes, Your Honor.

We get a penalty, but get to keep trying...

Sound: Gavel x 3

Sound: Whack

Well, there's one way to find out.

Sound: Desk Slam

Well, von Karma?

Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Realization

We've finally broken through on Karma!

I... refuse!
Sound: Desk Slam

Y-you refuse...!?

But, refusing this means...

Order! Order! Order!

Sound: Desk Slam

It was you who said we had to end it right here, right now!

Mm... mmmph!

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

Enough!

I permit the use of the metal detector.

Taking a step back here, wow what a violation of Karma's rights. There's no actual evidence against him or reason to search him. The judge is just going along with Phoenix's wild conjectures. Which I guess is fair because the judge has been going along with whatever Karma wanted up until now...

Nick! What does this mean...?

Sound: Beep

I was curious, but a metal detector would, in fact, pick up on a bullet. It really does rely just on metal's conductivity rather than something strictly being magnetic. (Multiple people in the thread pointed out this fact as well.)

Fun fact: All of Karma's animations only move his left arm; his right arm remains motionless. Including when we got tased the day before.

(The bullet!)

Mr. von Karma...?

...

You!

...

And so, I remained silent.
Sound: Realization

Music: Suspense

...?

Indeed, there is a bullet in my shoulder.

Prove it! We're the prosecuters now! (Oh wait, we're not, we're still going to have to prove it ourselves.)

What!?
Sound: Light Bulb

I was shot in the shoulder long before the DL-6 Incident!

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

"Prove"?

I have no obligation to prove anything!

Life as prosecutor in Ace Attorney land, everyone.

Not I.

M-Mr. Wright?

Well? Can you prove it?

Depends on how bloody you're willing to get.

Of course he can't!

All but one piece, thanks to Maya. And I think it's all we'll need.

So sorry, Mr. Wright.

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Phoenix has got this one all on his own.

Wh-what!?
Sound: Light Bulb

You were close... one day away from freedom.

Sound: Drama Pound

Music: Suspense

Wh-what!?
Sound: Stab

I can link that bullet in your shoulder to the DL-6 Incident...

Sound: Desk Slam

This would be proof, if the judge will allow us to dig that other bullet out of Karma's shoulder. Would the ballistic markings on the bullet in Karma be intact after all these years? Let's find out!

Th-that's...

Sound: Realization

quote:

The final failure:

N-Nick...?

Umm... If this is your final proof, don't you think you should choose a little better?
Sound: Whoops

Huh? You mean, that was the wrong evidence?

Everyone looks kinda puzzled...

Mr. Wright.

...
Sound: Damage 2

(Uh oh, he's really mad.)

I think you'd better dig out the right evidence, and quick!

R-right!

You got lucky, von Karma, but this next one is the real evidence, okay!?

I can link that bullet in your shoulder to the DL-6 Incident...

Sound: Desk Slam

And here's my final proof!

I like how the judge silently penalizes us this time. Anyway we loop here for another try at it.

Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered

Time for my favorite track, the "you're about to win" theme.

This is the bullet used in the DL-6 Incident.

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Realization

The callback to using ballistic markings - explained on the first day of trial - is a very nice touch here, even if it was spoiled a bit when we first acquired the bullet.

Ballistic markings...

Sound: Wipe

It came up in the first trial, two days ago.

All bullets fired from a gun are marked with that weapon's unique pattern.

It's quite accurate.

We have two bullets in our possession.

We could analyze both bullets...

Then, if the markings matched...

Sound: Desk Slam

Mmmph... mmmph!

Mr. von Karma?

The statute of limitations runs out today, after all. We must do everything we can to find the killer today!

Sound: Desk Slam

And solve this case once and for all!

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection

Mmmrrrrrrgggh!

Now Karma done fucked up. We're about to have some real evidence we can use today.

After all, we still have a witness on the stand.

Wait... I know!

Uh, suffice to say there were too many headbangs in there for me to capture in a GIF. Hold on, let me put a smaller one on loop for you all..

Music: Recollection ~ The DL-6 Incident

Given this prosecution office, I assume the error is getting caught, rather than faking evidence itself.

I... was careless.

I'm sorry, but you will have to be penalized.

:sigh:

...!
Sound: Shock 2

Edgeworth!!!

Sound: Wipe

I don't really need the Karma characterization here guys, we know he's an evil dick.

Me? Penalized!?

He was so shocked he didn't even realize an earthquake had happened.

Suddenly, I found myself in the darkness...

I was in the court records room.

"How can I fake some more evidence to cover up my prior faking evidence?"

The room was pitch black. The lights must have gone out.

I pressed the button, but nothing happened.

Then... there was a noise!

Music: Silence

Sound: Weak Gunshot

Music: Suspense

Hold up. Did the lights not go out in the court records room until several hours after the earthquake? Or did Karma stand at the elevator door in a fog for hours until he got shot? Wasn't it five hours that Edgeworth and crew were trapped in that elevator? Eh, I guess it doesn't matter at this point.

Elevator: We have detected a gunshot, I guess we should open the door now.

Much to my surprise, a pistol lay at my feet.

I knew then... it was destiny.

Music: Silence

Sound: Weak Gunshot

Now, isn't that the same animation as in the prologue? So you think it was showing the DL-6 Incident the whole time? Left-handed shooters are probably pretty rare...

He died, never knowing who had shot him.

Later, he spoke through a medium, blaming Mr. Yogi.

Tsk tsk tsk...

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Music: Trial

Judge!

Wh-what?

What are you doing!?

Karma: Still a dick while confessing to murder.

Now! End it!

V-very well.

Sound: Gavel

"Mr. Wright, I never want to see you in my courtroom again, your trials give me a headache."

Fifteen years later...

Mr. Miles Edgeworth?

Yes, Your Honor.

Innocent of the DL-6 Incident fifteen years ago. And innocent of the Hammond killing three days ago.

...

Yes, Your Honor.

:toot: Edgeworth, you owe us big time.
