Part 123: Episode 5, Day 2, Trial: Professional Witness

Part 123: Episode 5, Day 2, Trial: Professional Witness

And we're back in court!

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

It was a really dense day with a lot of questions and no answers, thank you very much. Seriously though - the day took only five updates, but 656 images. Compare that to episode 4, which had 9 updates for the first day but only 607 images across them all. I've been trying to do about an update per location, but this first day of investigation was a lot heavier at each spot. Everyone's real chatty when there aren't any cartridge space limitations to worry about....

Frankly, there are still a lot of... gray areas.

Or rather, the whole thing is one big gray area...

I'm ready to accept my fate.

I believe in you, sis.

Yes?

Don't worry, we didn't believe your confession for a second.

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

Never forget that.

Ms. Skye, you...

You remind me a lot of Mia.

But there is one decisive difference between you and her.

And that is?

Sound: Realization

...

I believe it's almost time for the trial.

Good luck, Mr. Wright.

(No one's going to bail me out this time...)

I am 100% certain that Ema will be helping out. And maybe we'll get to solve a case on our own without ghostly intervention?

Sound: Wipe

(I'll be alone in there...)

There we go.

Music: Silence

Courtroom Number Nine! Now you're just making up numbers.

Sound: Gallery

There's Ema beside us, as expected. And Edgeworth across from us...

Sound: Gavel

Music: Trial

The defense is ready, Your Honor.

(Edgeworth...)

I wonder how long it took for Edgeworth to get back to prosecuting cases.

Sound: Realization

Yeah, we get it, you're still a dick.

...!

The judgment to be made here is in our hands, not those of anyone else.

Very well, Mr. Edgeworth, your opening statement please.

Not only this, but she was rash enough to commit it in the Prosecutor's Office lot!

Oh good, Ema is taking notes. On Edgeworth. Wait, has she always had all those vials on her hip? What is she planning on doing with those?

I suddenly feel like confessing to everything!

Just in case you missed the old Edgeworth finger-waggle.

There was a witness to her crime...

Sound: Realization

Sound: Gavel

Music: Silence

Well then, call your first witness, Mr. Edgeworth!

(The "Cough-up Queen"...?)

Hmm? Haven't I seen you somewhere...?

Music: Happy People

Sound: Realization

Sound: Light Bulb

(The judge is really wolfing it down...)

Sound: Realization

Uh... thanks.

Will the witness state her name and profession?

Sound: Realization

...

So this is why everyone raves about caviar!

It's so tasty it hurts!
Sound: Whack

I see we're just directly bribing the judge now.

(What the heck does picked tapioca taste like!?)

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Name. Profession. Now.

I find myself running Lunchland these days.

Is... that what you wanted me to say, Mr. Edgeworth?

Music: Happy People

The prosecution will wait!
Sound: Light Bulb

I'm not finished eating...

(Hurry it up!)
Sound: Stab

Mmmm...

Very well, Mr. Edgeworth.

Music: Silence

Your Honor, as Mr. Edgeworth has said to the court...

Sound: Realization

Uh... Huh?

What exactly does that mean?

She was a first-rate homicide detective.

Sound: Whack

...

Sound: Objection

Let me guess, something happened two years ago...

I-I know who you are!!!

Cough-up...!?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Gavel

(Just who is this lady!?)

If I might have the court's attention over here...

Music: Logic and Trick

I suppose that's to keep visitors from taking up prosecutor's spaces, yes?

Music: Silence

And who was this valiant "witness"...?

Why, it was me, Your Honor.
Sound: Realization

This whole setup stinks.

Sound: Select Jingle

New evidence! Examining it just brings up the two-panel map that Angel already showed us, though.

Apparently at some point while talking to Marshall, we finally unlocked the profile for the victim. Having the guy's name be "Goodman" and the description say he was a "good man" is a pretty lazy pun for this game.

Witness, did you see the very moment of the crime?

Of course, Your Honor.

Having the entire case hinge on one individual with a grudge against Edgeworth and/or Lana is pretty sketchy. We'll have to hope there's a hole in her story somewhere. So far my only theory is that Angel and/or Marshall were trying to set up Edgeworth, Lana somehow came across the situation and she decided to take the fall for Edgeworth to make up for covering for/enabling all his bad behavior the last couple years. Which means as we progress down the road of proving Lana innocent, we'll probably initially be making Edgeworth look guilty?

Hmm...

It seems rather cut and dry, doesn't it?

Well, Mr. Wright?

Uh... I can't agree on principle, Your Honor.

Shall I proceed to crush what little hope they have remaining?

The judge is as impartial as ever.

(Wait, are they talking about me...!?)

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Somehow, I always knew a day like this would come.

I was on my way to deliver a lunchbox to my boyfriend...

Sound: Wipe

There's a nice image.

So is that how her left hand got injured? She had it on Goodman's chest to show her where to aim, and stabbed him through her own hand? Seems unlikely.

Thanks for clarifying which end of the knife was used in the stabbing murder.

Unfortunately, I don't see anything we can contradict with what we have right now.

Music: Silence

Hmph. As you can see...

There is no room for doubt.

The key "point" of your testimony seems to be nothing other than...

So... how does it feel to be so utterly crushed?

I... I'm still thinking about that.

Nice reference.

Very well, Mr. Wright. You may cross-examine the witness.

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

It's been awhile, so just reminding everyone that I start the cross with the end-of-testimony pep talk.

You said that before. Anything else?

(Sound pretty fatal to me.)
Sound: Stab

Sound: Whack x 2

Let's just keep our heads cool and press the witness a bit, shall we?

D-don't smile like that!
Sound: Whack

Pretty good advice - let's press.

Somehow, I always knew a day like this would come.

How did you know!?

Yet their methods are ugly and twisted.

Twisted methods will always lead to tragedy.

The lunchlady's uninformed opinion is duly noted.

Given that they are used to erasing inconvenient evidence at their whim...

...

I felt that I had found my dream job when I became an investigator...

Laid off...?
Sound: Realization

(She was fired...)

To me, prosecutors are nothing more than worms.

Very well.

You may continue, Ms. Starr.

That was a rather wordy press for the first line of testimony. We learned why exactly Angel is lying but not anything immediately useful.

I was on my way to deliver a lunchbox to my boyfriend...

This boyfriend... he's the detective?

Sound: Realization

Th-"that" boyfriend?

You have... several?

Care to join?

Sound: Realization

...

I-I'll stick with the lunches, thanks.
Sound: Stab

Odd re-use of an investigation sprite here. It looks like she turned away from the court to take her notes.

The security guard room is in the lot, in A Block.

We really should have gone there on the first day of investigation. See if anyone else saw anything, or if there is security footage of the area.

(That would be the room with the "SECURITY" sign.)

Since I'm a visitor now, I parked in B Block.

Not sure if that helps us yet; Edgeworth's car was right next to the fence separating the two areas.

When I sensed something... Perhaps it was my finely-honed detective's intuition at work.

It felt like... how would you say...

Oh yes...

I have no idea what that means.

Speaking of a "detective's intuition"...

Yes, well, he was like a young cheese.

A... young cheese?

Hmm...

then I must be hard, yellowed, and sharp as a tack.

Yeah, with the odor of an old cheese to match.

I think the game is trying too hard again. Or maybe it turns out when you have to deal with cartridge limitations you cut out the padded dialogue that doesn't actually contribute to the game. Sometimes dealing with constraints makes for a better game in the end.

Through the wire fence, I saw the chief prosecutor standing next to a garish car.

By "garish car," you mean...

Mr. Edgeworth's car, yes.
Sound: Realization

M-Mr. Edgeworth's!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Wasn't it?
Sound: Realization

...

Indeed, it was.

Sound: Gallery

Hmm!

What an odd case this is.

I saw her from no further than thirty feet away.

I am certain it was her.
Sound: Realization

(If she's telling the truth, we're doomed!)

Sound: Light Bulb

That's some real Mia Fey logic right there.

Sound: Desk Slam

Witness! In your testimony, you clearly stated the following:

Prosecutors are nothing more than worms.

Ergo!

You are a biased witness!

Not your best nitpick, Phoenix.

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Huh? Rookie?
Sound: Light Bulb

Unless you're willing to risk the consequences of doubting me?

Sound: Drama Pound
Sound: Damage 2

That...

That was inspiring!
Sound: Light Bulb

Ugh the witness directly threatens us and the judge is still just all :allears: at her. We need to chip away at something here.

Ema you're not helping.

Sound: Wipe

A picture? Not a great look for Lana with that bloodstained coat, but this photo seems to be missing some key elements...

Music: Suspense

A-a photograph!
Sound: Light Bulb

You took this!?
Sound: Whack

Awfully convenient for you to have a camera at the ready here...

(I suppose that's more exciting than just hanging it around your neck.)

quote:

This line appears to be different in the original DS version of the game:

Er... this is my first time seeing this photograph.

I do like the new line better, but interesting that it's different!

You think I'd show it to you, a prosecutor? Think again.

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Sound: Gavel

Sound: Select Jingle

(Uh oh, that is unmistakably Lana Skye!)

So, what was the defendant doing at the time?

quote:

Pressing again on this line, repeats the same early dialogue, and then cuts off after the line "I am certain it was her" since we already have the photo.

Music: Questioning - Moderato

The chief prosecutor was holding a knife in her right hand...

Tell me more about this knife that the suspect was carrying.

Well, I'd say the blade was about 4 inches long.

Er... Ahem, yes, that's about right.

Detectives even more so, I would imagine.

I'm sure it was easier than boiling an egg for my Egg Salad Surprise Set.
Sound: Realization

Sound: Desk Slam

Hmm? Perhaps a Chicken Salad Set would have been a better metaphor?

So, the defendant was holding a knife. What then?

Then, she thrust the pointy tip of the knife into Detective Goodman's chest!

Tell the court why you didn't try to stop this crime!

You did see her raise the knife to strike, no?

Hmm...

The defense has a point.

Too late...?

Sound: Stab 2

I.. I see.

Well, that was the shortest press of them all. Our total pressing results are a lot of empty words and a new piece of evidence. But we still need to find a contradiction.

We have a lot of evidence we can use. But which one reveals the contradiction here?
