Part 124: Episode 5, Day 2, Trial: Premeditated Murder

There are two reasons that this photo is the right evidence to use here. The in-game reason - there is no knife or victim shown in the photo. The gameplay-reason - we got this evidence during an optional press, so we can't be allowed to proceed without it (no evidence in this game is miss-able). We can also present this photo on either of Ms. Starr's last two lines of testimony. Either way...

Music: Silence

And you witnessed this?

You saw Ms. Skye stab the victim with the knife?

Sound: Realization

Hmm!!!

I'm sure that is a fine lunch!

But... isn't that odd?

Look at this photograph!

Sound: Objection

quote:

A quick side trip towards a guilty verdict, if we got this one wrong five times in a row:

Music: Silence

Sound: Gavel

That's enough!

This court sees no reason to further prolong the trial.

The defense has failed to give the court sufficient reason to doubt the prosecution's claim!

This court finds the defendant, Ms. Lana Skye....

G u i l t y
Sound: Guilty x 6

The accused will surrender to the court immediately,

to be held pending trial at a higher court within a month from today's date.

That is all. This court is adjourned!

I mostly just wanted the image of Lana getting the verdict here. Why is she holding her right hand behind her back, I wonder?

Music: Objection!

...

...

...

Ahem.

Music: Silence

Sound: Light Bulb

I guess our claim isn't even worthy of a full voiced line/chat bubble combo.

That had to be the weakest "objection" ever, Edgeworth.

What do you mean, Mr. Edgeworth?

Sound: Realization

There's still no victim pictured, but whatever.

A-and how can you tell that!?

Blood splatter.
Sound: Realization

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

(But it's a black-and-white photograph!)
Sound: Whack

Well, Mr. Wright? I see no problem here.

No problem... except you.

Sound: Whack

Of course we're objecting!

Sound: Desk Slam

Wait! That contradicts what the witness said in her testimony!

Sound: Objection

quote:

Backing off sometimes works... just not here.

Now that you mention it, I see no problem here.

Other than myself.
Sound: Realization

M-Mr. Wright! You can't just let him walk all over you! Th-that's just sad!
Sound: Whack

Feeling sad, Mr. Wright?

Perhaps a bittersweet "First Love Lunchbox" is in order?

Sound: Gavel

Well, that was a waste of time.

Music: Questioning - Moderato

(Perhaps I should have dug a little deeper...)

No penalty, and we don't simply loop or get forced into the other option anyway. Instead we're brought all the way back to the cross and have to present the same photo again. And we make the same objection and get the same rude treatment from Edgeworth again....

Music: Objection!

Sound: Realization

...

...

Music: Silence

Th-that's it!?
Sound: Stab

Sound: Objection

I have no idea what we're talking about anymore.

I didn't have time to stop her.

Prosecutor Skye was cold, calculating, like a robot.

Sound: Stab 2

Music: Suspense

Thanks Phoenix for grabbing that one on your own.

P-premeditated!?

How do you know!?

Sound: Realization

Lots of speculation there, but it also seems like something someone would do if they came across a crime scene. Police probably always have gloves lying around, would prosecutors?

Uh...
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Drama Pound
Sound: Objection

That's a pretty lame argument. Could be any type of gloves for normal wear that she just happened to be wearing or have in her car or purse or something.

Sound: Stab 2

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

These gloves do seem to tell a tale of premeditation!

Witness! Add this to your testimony!

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Well, fuck. We don't actually get a whole new testimony. Instead we're brought back to the first testimony, with the last two lines (either one that we could have used the crime photo on) replaced by this one. So clearly we're expected to present something else on this line now. But what? Maybe I can press again?

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Desk Slam

The gloves were admitted as evidence when the defendant was arrested!

Well why the fuck is that not in the Court Record then!? Where's my new evidence jingle?

In other words, when the chief prosecutor came to the crime scene...

Sound: Realization

Well shit, that press certainly didn't help.

Music: Silence

Everything was planned, it was a premeditated crime!
Sound: Objection

Arrrrgh!
Sound: Stab

(This is bad...)

(If she can prove this claim, the trial's already over!)

Sound: Realization

Music: Questioning - Moderato

We're given no real hints, and dumped back at the testimony. Which is now over so we get the same "end of testimony" pep talk from Ema as before, and it's just as unhelpful.

Dammit, I knew the answer to the last one, I should have just kept going so I could ask for help on this one. It's too early to end the update now. There are a couple of vague options here. Maybe this is a case where multiple options work? The autopsy report is kind of vague on time of death but doesn't really contradict anything here. The knife or the parking slip are better options, since she didn't know she'd have access to Edgeworth's car or the knife within its trunk ahead of the murder?

Let's try the knife. It seems a little more directly related.

Music: Silence

:slick:

That's a knife. THE knife.

Indeed, it is my knife.

What's with this case?
Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gallery

Who's bringing their little kid to a murder trial?

Sound: Desk Slam

The defense has a request.

What's that, Rookie?

In your testimony...

And that's why she was wearing those special gloves.

However!

Sound: Realization

Sound: Light Bulb

Okay, so it's an interesting point and reveals a "contradiction" on her off-the-cuff revised testimony, but does it really matter if it was pre-meditated or not?

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Objection

Music: Objection!

Sound: Damage 2

That was all it took to break you? We haven't even refuted any actual elements of the crime yet!

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order! Order!

(Great! Now the tide is turning in our favor!)

Sound: Light Bulb

...We have a long way to go, don't we.

Wright.

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

W-what!?

I can't believe I like Edgeworth now. He's so much more fun.

Not over such a trifling detail!

Sound: Stab

There are a lot of two-sprite lines coming out of both Edgeworth and Wright in this episode, not just all the new characters.

Bah.

The prosecution could care less if it was premeditated or not.

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Very good, Mr. Prosecutor... I suppose you think you're clever now?

Sound: Realization

If it wasn't, why would she have been wearing...

Sound: Gavel

I believe I'd like to hear your testimony again.

How dare you!

Sound: Objection

(Really now...)

Yeah this lady is a train wreck.

Sound: Testimony 2

Hey we finally broke through to the second testimony.

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Lana Skye intended to murder Detective Goodman!

I'm sure the Chief Prosecutor had a grudge against the victim.

Yeah, okay.

Music: Silence

It does sound a lot like premeditation, doesn't it!?

Thank you!

In any case, the defense may now cross-examine the witness.

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

(Ms. Starr has turned out to be as short-tempered as she looked when we met her.)

The short wick burns out the fastest!

It's a scientific fact!

I mean, add more wax and even a really short wick will burn longer...
Sound: Realization

...

I really don't need to, but let's get to pressing.

Lana Skye intended to murder Detective Goodman!

Sound: Desk Slam

You've said that, but you haven't told us how you know!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Whack

I believe what she just said was a mere prelude to the story she is about to tell.

Try not to interrupt her again.

Rookie..

Sound: Objection

(Something's half-baked here alright, and it's you!)

Now, why did you believe the suspect had intentions to murder the victim?

Her actions speak for themselves!

That's why she called the victim all the way to the Prosecutor's Office.

You have no proof that Ms. Skye called him there!

You have no proof that she didn't!
Sound: Realization

Hmm...

Mr. Edgeworth, thoughts?

She might have written him a letter!
Sound: Realization

(C'mon! You could have tried "public phone" first, at least!)

Do people under the age of like 20 know what public phones were?

I'm sure he had a reason to be there.

Witness?

I'm sure the Chief Prosecutor had a grudge against the victim.

Sound: Desk Slam

What kind of "grudge"!?

Well, I wouldn't know that.

Sound: Whack

Rookie...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

H-how am I supposed to know!?
Sound: Stab

See? We agree there is a lunchbox here, but we don't know what's inside!

Sound: Realization

I-I get it! That's why my lunch was so salty!
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Questioning - Moderato

(This judge isn't very good with metaphors...)

This entire testimony feels very skippable.

Will you tell us your basis for thinking this?

It's simple...

Nothing else could drive that human machine to plunge the knife in again and again...

A "human machine"!?

That's a contradiction!
Sound: Objection

Please...

I'm on Team Edgeworth for this testimony. Phoenix, step your pressing game up.

Note to self: Mr. Edgeworth's sighs smell like citrus fruit.

Umm...

You say "again and again"... how many times did she stab him, exactly?

What difference does it make if the deed is done!?
Sound: Objection

And yet, that's the part we're going to have to object to...

(How come she's getting mad at me!?)
Sound: Stab

(Leave it at that!? This is a murder case, people!)

Sound: Light Bulb

This testimony really doesn't need the kid gloves, game.

You would have had to really not been paying attention when we got the autopsy report to have not figured this one out.

Music: Silence

You say she stabbed him again and again...

But you couldn't have witnessed that!
Sound: Objection

Are you testing me...?

Then I'll test you!

Sound: Objection

Sound: Realization

Edgeworth isn't even pretending that his witness is making any sense. I know he's on the other side but we really need to get him some better witnesses.

...!?
Sound: Light Bulb

W-what do you mean?

I shouldn't have to explain this...

But, take a look.

...Why is Edgeworth the one showing this?

Ah hah! You're right!
Sound: Stab 2

Music: Telling the Truth

Good show, Mr. Edgeworth!

What a hunk!
Sound: Light Bulb

He's my hero, really.

Well, witness?

This game is really over-using this dynamic sprite business. We got it after three examples, move on already.

You got the Crime Scene Set, right?
Sound: Realization

Uh... oh, thanks.
Sound: Light Bulb

But now, I realize that such mistakes are possible.

So...

You're saying you mistook something... for blood?
Sound: Realization

That's why I thought she must have stabbed him at least twice.

That doesn't make any fucking sense.

Music: Silence

Sound: Gavel

...

Music: Questioning - Moderato

We don't get a whole new testimony, just this one line replacing her last line of testimony. So we press again...

Her red muffler?

So she can be easily hanged at a moment's notice, I suppose...

Says the woman with a collar around her neck...

(She's right...)

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Realization

Okay, I like how the flashback started out grayscale and then faded into color on mentioning "red", that's a good use of the more dynamic dialogue.

But wait...

...

Well, people often mistake my beard...

For a bib.
Sound: Light Bulb

Actually...

However, the autopsy report is clear on this matter.

Edgeworth shutting down his own witness is always fun.

...

Mr. Wright!

This is our chance!!!

Chance for what, I wonder...?

We repeat the end of testimony scene again here, because what we really need to do is present something again. Two testimonies in a row where we have to present twice, but it feels more like padding than really adding to the experience here.

So, what's it going to be this time?
