Part 134: Episode 5, Day 2, Investigation: Unusual Suspect

Part 134: Episode 5, Day 2, Investigation: Unusual Suspect

Music: Silence

Uh, yeah, I guess they did.

(Best to not go too far down that road right now. Things will just get confusing.)

Arresting two different people for the same crime with completely different theories of the crime seems a little extreme even for this wacky justice system.

Sound: Ween

For full effect, make sure you turn your volume way up when playing that sound effect. It was not kind to my ears.

Wh-what was that!?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Objection

Sound: Objection

Sound: Realization
Sound: Thud 2

Oh, hell. And I just started the update so I can't even bail out. We're going to spend the whole time talking to this guy aren't we? Shit.

Ah, oh, uh. Hi. Greetings, sir!
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Whack

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

Wait, I know who you are...
Sound: Light Bulb

This is the second time we've had a flashback to this same scene.

I'm here, sir, at the request of the Chief, sir! I've got your report, sir!

Sound: Light Bulb

Ema... I, what... just, never mind.

Sound: Gavel

Oh, I get it.

You're here to deliver a report?

No, sir, I, uh, how should I say this...

(Wait... he isn't... is he?)

Music: Silence

You... Officer Meekins... You didn't... did you?
Sound: Realization

Err.........

Guys he's on the other side of the window for a reason.

Sound: Ween

Gah that awful noise is back. Who let this guy keep his megaphone?

What...!?

Whaaaaaaaaat!?
Sound: Stab 2

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

(Now this is an unexpected turn of events...)

Might be the least-likely suspect yet.

What does our friend the static background guard have to say about this development?

This guard monitors the visitor's room.

No comments from the peanut gallery!

Did you even remember this camera was still here? It hasn't had anything new to say in a long time.

Smile for the camera...

I really don't want to end up defending this guy, too. Can we just let Lana go and get the hell out of here? No?

Sound: Ween

Fuck I'm going to have to play this section on mute soon.

Ow. I can hear you fine, Officer Meekins.
Sound: Stab

The guard station in front of the room was empty, sir!

So, normally there's a guard at the evidence room?

Now, the security officer...

was none other than Officer Marshall!
Sound: Realization

(M-Marshall!?)

We can't get to this scene without having gone to the guard station and seen all of Marshall's stuff there. You can't really be that surprised, Phoenix.

That's when I saw him, sir!

A suspicious person in the evidence room!

A suspicious person, sir!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Gavel
Sound: Stab 2
Sound: Rooster

That's... quite the animation. I had the damnedest time finding that last sound effect. It's apparently from the Apollo Justice series, and got imported into this episode. I didn't want to look too closely at how or why, given the likely spoilers.

(What the heck is this guy doing?)

So what happened then?

And... when I came to,

I was here. In the detention center.

(How long were you out!? Days!?)
Sound: Whack

...Didn't we see him try to deliver a report to Edgeworth during this supposed blackout period?

Sound: Realization

Sound: Thud 2

Sir! There was no one to bandage me, sir!

So I did what I could to wrap it up, sir!

But... that does nothing to explain how he injured it in the first place!

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Now that is how you do a flashback.

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

I can't decide if it was really one stabbing or two. I'm leaning towards two, but we're short a victim.

First things first... tell us how you hurt your hand!

We get a new topic out of that statement, but I refuse to go through these out of order.

Um, I don't mean to pry, but you are the perpetrator, correct?

You killed Detective Bruce Goodman in the evidence room... right?

Sound: Ween

~subtly turns down the volume...~

If you have to label me as perpetrator or victim, sir...
Sound: Ween

Sound: Gavel

There's some nightmare-fuel for you. That animation is the first one with actual motion blur that I've noticed.

Then label me victim!

Um, I would, but you happen to be in detention. And alive and well at that.
Sound: Stab

Did you know the victim, Detective Goodman?

Sound: Thud 2

Well, sir, if I had to label him as a "stranger" or a "total stranger"...

Sound: Ween

Fun(?) fact - the normal blips for text appearing on the screen are not present when Meekins is using his megaphone.

So... you didn't know him?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Thud 2

I don't know any detectives!

Sir! I had n-no intention of killing him, sir! None!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Ween

I lied, I only wished I had turned down the volume. Now I have to hear that awful sound again while writing up this update.

(At least someone around here is more confused than I am.)

It's not looking good for getting useful information out of this guy, that's for sure.

About your hand... Did that happen during the course of the crime?

Well! You see, sir,
Sound: Ween

I, er...
Sound: Realization

Don't you think you should just confess?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Ween

"Nothing you could do"...?

Sir, to tell the truth, sir, when it happened...

Sound: Thud 2

And the next thing I knew, I was unconscious!

The next thing you knew you were... huh?
Sound: Realization

Then, when I opened my eyes...

Sound: Gavel

I wonder if that face is from forgetting his hand is injured when he slams his other fist into it there.

I was alone in the evidence room, sir! All alone!

Sound: Drama Pound

Music: Silence

What!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack

Sound: Ween

I'm glad I added the sound effects in, so you all can understand my pain, even if you reasonably choose not to also experience it.

(The victim's body... disappeared...?)
Sound: Realization

Hmm... That's some story.

This is a shock? We know it made it to the parking garage at some point.

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

We're out of topics, so let's run through the evidence.

Officer Meekins, have a look at this.

...

Music: Silence

Sound: Whack

Ha ha... huh?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Whack

She... what?

M-me? Why would I...?
Sound: Realization

I'm torn between asking who else has matching badges and insisting that no one matches our shiny Attorney's Badge.

Sound: Whack
Sound: Ween

Sound: Objection

(Is he talking about those badges on her coat?)

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

Hmph.
Sound: Realization

I'm even more confused now than from just talking to him.

I guess we have to keep moving down the list.

Um... do you think you could take a look at this?

...

Hey!
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Silence

Sound: Whack
Sound: Ween

That's what!?
Sound: Stab

Sound: Thud 2

My head was a blank until this very moment!

But, sir, now I remember! I remember, sir!

You mean you remember what happened?

Sound: Gavel

This... ID card?
Sound: Realization

Exactly, sir! That's exactly it!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Ween

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

(I'd better pry into this one a little deeper.)

Ugh, do we have to?

Not if we finish off the evidence list first!

Officer Meekins, could you take a look at this?

Sound: Light Bulb

Maybe you should ask Mr. Edgeworth, sir?
Sound: Gavel

He's passing the buck, Mr. Wright.

It takes a special kind of man to pass the buck to Edgeworth...

Right, so that was the generic reaction to stuff he doesn't care about.

Officer Meekins, this is for you!

Sound: Objection

It's okay, I just wanted you to take a look at it.

That's it, sir! Last night, sir! That's the one!

Sound: Realization

What in all of the hells.

On second thought, you don't have to look at the knife.

(Hmm... He's overreacting to the knife, but I guess he's been through a lot.)

Skipping ahead to the next item that Meekins will react to...

Hey! Why do you have that? That's...

From the day... It was taken at the Prosecutor's Office.

So this means...
Sound: Realization + Whack

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection
Sound: Drama Pound

Uh, maybe? I'm more hoping to lock you away and get Lana out of there.

If this is a dream, sir...

Then I hope I never wake up!
Sound: Ween

(If this is a dream you'd better wake up right now!)

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

The only other thing Meekins will talk about is the other knife; however he just has the same dialogue as for the first knife. So we're done with our evidence...

The second topic has been replaced, now that we've heard about the original topic and shown him Goodman's ID (in that order).

Can you tell me what it is you do "remember"?

And that's why you thought he looked suspicious...

Well, that sounds pretty much by the book so far.

Sound: Gavel

Sound: Whack

So you asked Detective Goodman to show his ID card. What did he do?

Sound: Ween

Something is itching at the back of my brain, saying that someone was pretending to be Goodman. Possibly to get into the evidence room and steal the SL-9 evidence? That coat that Goodman was wearing also looks a lot like the coat that Lana is wearing in the crime scene photo.

What...!?
Sound: Light Bulb

So I whooped and leapt at him!
Sound: Whack

(Detective Goodman pointed a knife at him?)
Sound: Realization

Sound: Ween
Sound: Gavel

I- uh, well that's one way to put it.

Wh-what happened then?

Well...

Sound: Realization

Then how did you show up in Edgeworth's office yesterday with that report?

(Right...)

Oh good, there's more.

What do you mean, Ema?
Sound: Realization

Let's look at what we know.

Music: Logic and Trick

In other words, we have no way of knowing if the victim was really the victim!
Sound: Realization

We don't even know if anyone actually died!
Sound: Light Bulb

...Are we going to be allowed in there to hose it down with luminol now?

Sound: Whack
Sound: Drama Pound

That is...

I did say something along those lines.

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

But you still ended up here...?

Sound: Realization

But... you don't remember the events clearly?

Sound: Realization

Of course there's a tape, and it took you this long to mention it.

Music: Silence

Huh? Video tape...?
Sound: Light Bulb

From the security camera.
Sound: Realization

You know, from the dozen monitors in the guard station?

Sound: Ween
Sound: Drama Pound

Possibly more conclusive than a biased witness. As long as no one's wearing an elaborate disguise.

...

...

...

Sound: Damage 2

Get 'em, Ema!

Sound: Thud 2

Ugh you're not even worth getting mad at. It's like getting mad at a puppy for peeing on the carpet.

Music: Marvin Grossberg ~ Old Age, Regret, Retribution

N-no thanks, I have my own. (Well, guess we'd better go check out the crime scene.)

Before we go, we managed to unlock the profile for Meekins at some point in this update. He's even younger than Phoenix. I still hope to never see him again.

So, should we go straight back to the evidence room? Or see if anything changed at one of our other locations first? There's exactly one right answer, but can you figure it out?
