Part 135: Episode 5, Day 2, Investigation: Crime Scene Unlocked

Not a lot of participation here, given there weren't any real hints and I can go visit every location without you having to wait and see it all anyway. However, going straight back to the guard station doesn't actually do anything - we still don't have access. Now, where else could we find someone that could give us access?

Somewhere else with a lot of police around seems like a good bet.

Music: Silence

Sound: Light Bulb

(It's Police Chief Gant!)
Sound: Realization

I wasn't expecting him, but I bet he could still get us access to the crime scene. But will he?

You know what it means if there is anything missing!

Sir! I'm sure it's most likely totally perfect!
Sound: Gavel

under his seat cushion, behind his computer monitor, inside his personal coffee machine...

quote:

The original version amusingly included "pillowcases" in the list, instead of "bags" and "hats" and "under his seat cushion". Doesn't make a lot of sense but it is a little funnier.

Y-y-y-yessir!!! We'll scour the place again, sir!
Sound: Objection

(The Chief of Detectives looks a little flustered...)

Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Clapping

Oh ho ho, Chief Gant! Reporting for duty, sir!
Sound: Objection

Sound: Whack

I think Phoenix got caught up in the moment.

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

The best music of the episode is back.

Let's check in on our aspiring writer.

That must be one of the detectives.

He's mumbling something to himself.

"What a crafty trick! That gunshot was a fake!"

I guess you could use a cassette tape playing like a gear in some elaborate contraption? Or maybe the tape itself could be pulled out and used to strangle someone?

...

He's not writing a report... he's writing a novel.

Let's check in with our slacker chief.

Ooh, sorry you had to see that.

Well, see over there? That's Goodman's desk.

Sound: Realization

They took away every last piece of garbage in the trash can.

Of course not! Well, except for this.
Sound: Realization

What!? You kept something!?
Sound: Whack

It's a lost item report but it's only half complete.

The date on it is February 21. (Better make a note of that just in case.)

Sound: Select Jingle

Did Goodman lose something related to the case? Or was he going to pretend to lose something... like SL-9 evidence?

(I should really get back to investigating the Police Department crime scene...)
Sound: Realization

Despite this statement, there's nothing new at the crime scene yet. But that evidence description had a hint to it.

quote:

Original line in this case was "(I should probably get a quick look around the crime scene...)", which is vague and even more misleading. Almost implies we want to head back to the parking garage.

Our new item is at the end of the list, so let's try everything else first.

I was wondering, could you take a look at this?

Ah, sorry, Wrighto.
Sound: Light Bulb

I'm through with that stuff. Through, I say.

Either him or the Dancing Blue Badger.

We get the same reaction to all our evidence, including this new report that we were told to submit to Gant.

I admit I'm having trouble seeing the relevance of it. But the ID starting as "9" and getting scratched out and replaced with a "5" is suspicious. Did Goodman make that correction, or someone else?

Looks like talking is our only option.

Um... is Edgeworth going to be okay?

Sound: Light Bulb

The text shows up really quickly on that line.

Sounds like an inquisition...!

You mean... the incident on Gourd Lake?

And you! You got someone else found guilty in that case, right, Wrighto?
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Sound: Wipe

A legend he was, undefeated in his forty year career!

I don't really remember the "forging evidence" part as much as the "was actually the killer" part. But I'm also 99% sure that Gant is just trolling us.

W-wait! I didn't do anything wrong! He did forge evidence.
Sound: Light Bulb

Why, they'd do just about anything to restore their reputation.

Sound: Realization

Wh-what!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Clapping

("Their" being... the "prosecutors'", I assume?)

quote:

The previous two lines were a little different originally:

Gant: "It's downright odd, I tell you. I mean, it happened at exactly the same time!"
Phoenix: "(The murder at the Prosecutor's Office...)"

I guess the original wording there could be considered a little awkward? Kind of a lateral move, really.

Yes, but that's what the evidence is saying.

Sound: Realization

What evidence is this...?

Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Clapping

And this in particular, well it's a little sensitive... and I can't talk about it.

(I wasn't expecting much anyway.)

But you know...

Ah, he was the one you were picking on earlier?
Sound: Light Bulb

Huh? You saw that? Whoops!

(I wonder what it was that he wanted the Chief of Detectives to do?)
Sound: Realization

A rare case where examining a static background character is required to progress. I'm not sure it makes narrative sense since the chief of detectives didn't actually tell us anything relevant to this new topic that's been unlocked, but I'm sure the evidence we got will be required at some point. Anyway, "talking to" the chief of detectives (by examining him) and clearing both of Gant's initial topics opens up this third topic.

Actually, I was wondering if I could ask you a favor?

Sound: Light Bulb

I was wondering if we could investigate the evidence room?

Music: Silence

Now, Wrighto...
Sound: Realization

A-actually, I'm sorry, I d-don't need to investigate after all!
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Gavel

Wrighto, please, do I look like a selfish man?

Huh?

So, go ahead! Investigate that room to your heart's content! Knock yourself out!
Sound: Whack

I still feel like we're being manipulated somehow.

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Sound: Light Bulb

And for you, here, you can borrow this.

Sound: Light Bulb

That's a special card for guests, so don't lose it.

Y-yessir!

It's an honor!

Music: Silence

And Gant wanders off...

Sound: Realization

I actually went back to look at her earlier portraits, and no, they haven't changed. She was always wearing that clipped ID badge, with what appears to be her picture on it. Some kind of student ID, maybe? The ID from Gant doesn't actually show up in our evidence list, either; it's just some invisible plot flag I guess.

You seem... happy.

Sound: Gavel

(I think this place is a bad influence on the girl.)

No one has anything new to say, about the new Lost Item Report or in general, so it's back to the evidence room we go! Gant wasn't real chatty so let's keep this update rolling!

At first glance, this room doesn't appear any different, either.

However, a certain door we can now access has lost its examination check mark.

The evidence room is beyond that door.

Let's just walk in! ...
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

Ah hah! The card reader is turned off, see?

What is that security guard thinking?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Realization

What, you didn't think we were actually going to avoid talking to this guy, did you?

Music: Jake Marshall ~ The Detective from the Wild West

O-Officer Marshall! (Why does it have to be him?)
Sound: Light Bulb

Phoenix needs to work on his powers of observation, I think.

As you may have surmised, this here's my saloon.

...

Sound: Realization

Y-yeehaw?
Sound: Realization

Sorry, I'm not trying to figure out which of the dozens of random beep-boop sound effects matches that one. You can imagine it from the text, I'm pretty sure.

(Looks like the card reader's on again.)

While we're here, I was wondering if we could ask you some questions?

You're... busy, then?

Did I say that?

(Actually, you said you had "no mind to tangle with us hombres.")

Before we talk more with Marshall, he has something to say as we re-examine the room.

The evidence room is beyond that door.

I turned on the card reader.

Go have yourself a ball, pardners!

Sound: Light Bulb

(Let's get this investigation started already...)

We unlocked the ability to move to the evidence room the last time we examined the door, but I don't like leaving potentially fruitful conversations behind so let's finish up with Marshall first.

You sure have a lot of monitors in here!

One for each section.

Sound: Realization

...I think he just doesn't know the answer himself.

Unless you're the security guard responsible!

Look, on the floor, it's a lasso.

Hmm... looks like it's set up to trap something.

Sound: Realization

What!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack

(Detective Gumshoe, I presume...)

I don't know what's worse; that Marshall put out a lasso to trap people or that Gumshoe got trapped by it.

Odd typo there. Now she sounds Italian. It's a me, Ema Skye!

Sound: Realization

Huh?

Y'all get along home now!

I always wanted to say that.

This cactus sure is prickly. It must be real.

Billy... The cactus has a name?

Billy, you're wearing your cowboy hat on your hand.

I just picked that up, but Billy took a fancy to it.

(Looks like it got stuck on the spines and he couldn't get it off.)

A leather jacket, leather pants, and a leather...

Sound: Realization

Ah hah! A poncho!
Sound: Light Bulb

It sure looks cool, but the name is a little silly.

With the room fully scrutinized, let's see if this cowboy officer has any juicy evidence for us. Like a tape of Meekins in the evidence room...

Um, I was wondering if we could talk to you...

Sorry, Bambina.

Like a gunslinger loading his six-shooter, I say a little prayer.

Sound: Whimper

What was that all about, Mr. Wright?

I think he was just too hungry to talk.

Luckily we have something for that.

I mean, that is usually what that means, no?

You have no idea what he was talking about either!

(Well, in any case, we need to get cracking on this investigation, pronto!)

Well, talking is out, how about some evidence?

The sheriffs back in the Wild West didn't place much faith in evidence.

Um... this is neither "Wild" nor "West" here...

Um, the first episode proved we're in the Pacific time zone at least. And it's somewhat implied that we're in California in particular. That seems pretty "West" to me?

Sound: Light Bulb

...

I... guess so? Huh? I'm lost.

(Looks like we need some evidence to get anywhere with this guy.)

Guess all we can do is give him this totally still-fresh boxed lunch.

.........

Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

So, Officer Marshall...
Sound: Light Bulb

You're from Texas?

Uh, yeah, Ms. Starr...

Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Suspense

What? What's wrong?
Sound: Light Bulb

Uhh, was the steak a trap!?

Sound: Realization
Sound: Drama Pound
Sound: Objection

At this point, I'm imagining that Angel has different signals that she sends to Jake based on what's in the lunchbox.

Music: Silence

I don't see. I wonder what it means?

Sound: Select Jingle

Alright, Bambina. You win.

(Finally, it seems like...)

He's willing to talk!

He still doesn't like any of our evidence, but we can try talking again.

Officer Marshall, you're in charge of security for the evidence room, right?

Actually, Officer Meekins at the detention center told us.

Ah, that poor little dogie?

He told us something.

Sound: Realization

I don't see a lot of sprite changes Phoenix is talking to someone.

... Well, maybe I shouldn't be telling you this...

Music: Silence

But since I got demoted from detective two years ago...

Not just demoted, but tasked with sitting around guarding the evidence room all day? Yeah, no thanks.

So... what were you doing around 5:15 when the murder took place?

Well...

Sound: Realization

Note: he was riding down the highway on his horse named "Zippy."

There's no need for people here, anyhow.

You mean the security camera system?
Sound: Realization

I don't take to machines much.

Music: Jake Marshall ~ The Detective from the Wild West

Ms. Starr told us something...

It was always my dream to be a rawhide wrangler on the scene of the crime...

You're still investigating the SL-9 Incident with Ms. Starr, aren't you?

That was my case...

I thought it was Goodman's case? Though I guess Marshall was still on the case...

I can't let it go...

That's all there is to it.

What kind of case was it, anyway?

Gotta save something for Day 3!

...

There are some things you're better off not knowing, Bambina.

Two days ago... the day of our case!

Sound: Realization

(Edgeworth was talking about the transferals, too.)

More teasing but no reward just yet.

I know what maybe two of the machines in here do.

O-only two of them? There must be a dozen!

Another weird typo. Rogue capital letter, or missing period?

I like them about as much as I like stewed cauliflower with my steaks.

(Those are the ones that Officer Meekins mentioned.)

If nothing happens, the tapes are automatically erased every few hours.

Sound: Light Bulb

I reckon they might be.
Sound: Realization

(You're the security guard and you "reckon"!?)

One more thing.

We should've just used Goodman's ID to get in here in the first place. Maybe they deactivated it already.

(Thus the card reader by the door.)

Now that sounds useful.

Well I see one familiar number already. Another number appearing twice is pretty suspicious, too...

(So this is the ID card record...)

Hey! I've seen that somewhere before!
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Realization

Huh?

I haven't heard whether this is related to the case, yet.

Yeah, how could the record of who accessed the crime scene at the time of the murder possibly be relevant?

Sound: Light Bulb

I know, I know.

(Maybe there's some way I can prove that record is tied to the stabbing.)

If only we had some kind of card with a number that matched one of the numbers on that sheet of paper! Let's keep talking instead.

Sorry, but could you explain what this whole "transferal" thing is about?

We keep only evidence from solved cases in this room.

As opposed to the evidence room in criminal affairs, which keeps evidence for unsolved cases until the statute of limitations is up? It's weird that this episode came up with its own separate evidence room for some reason.

So we can re-investigate them if it turns out there was a mistake, see?

So, what happens to the evidence after two years?

Yet another evidence storage location...

That's what we call "transferal." We do it every February.

I see now...

"Transferal" is like a funeral for old cases.

Never to be reopened again. Never to be reinvestigated.

(And that happened to SL-9 two days ago...)

Talking is just about over. We're getting a little more mileage out of this ID card first, though.

Sound: Light Bulb

Ah, the one that was on the ground in the parking lot?

The number on this is... "5842189."
Sound: Realization

Music: Logic and Trick

Sound: Light Bulb

It was used at... 5:14. Right before the stabbing!
Sound: Realization

So... there's no way it was actually Goodman using that card, right? Since he was found a 30-minute drive away at the same time? And that's why the person attacked Meekins instead of showing the ID card, because the picture didn't match? But then how did the ID card make it back to the parking garage afterward?

(But wait, what did Officer Meekins say?)

So you asked Detective Goodman to show his ID card. What did he do?

Sound: Objection

Music: Silence

(Why would he have pointed a knife at Officer Meekins?)
Sound: Realization

Alright, compadre, you win.
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Select Jingle

(I've got an idea...)

(Maybe I should show this list to other people with IDs here...)
Sound: Realization

Was Meekins one of the IDs on the list? Or did he wander in with the door already open? Who's got the lucky 7's? I tried showing this record to Marshall, but he didn't respond to it at all, so I guess he's not one of the ones on the list.

While I could run around trying to show this record to everyone, I'm kind of itching to get into the evidence room. So we'll lead off with finally digging into the scene of the crime next time!
