Part 146: Episode 5, Day 3, Investigation: Chief's Office

Part 146: Episode 5, Day 3, Investigation: Chief's Office

Music: Silence

I don't see Detective Gumshoe anywhere.

Were we supposed to be looking for him?

You're right. (The Chief of Detectives seems the same though.)

Okay? I thought we had a destination in mind already.

Right. We can come back here later.

I really just came here as a way to get to the Police Department, but I guess we can stop and look around.

That man must be the Chief of Detectives.

He's staring at the screen so hard it might shatter.

That's what I thought all along...

I just never bothered to tell anyone.

(Now there's a guy who cares about his work...)

Real helpful, thanks pal.

That must be one of the detectives.

He's mumbling something to himself.

"Very clever indeed... That would explain the alibi!"

...

He's not writing a report... he's writing a novel.

I hope all those ideas aren't for the same novel. Someone needs to tell him that sometimes less is more.

Anyway...

Sound: Realization

I would've thought we'd be more likely to see you in the detention center than at the police station.

Music: Jake Marshall ~ The Detective from the Wild West

Oh, Mr. Marshall!
Sound: Light Bulb

Que será será. You never know where life'll lead you, eh Bambina?

Billy...?

Must be his pet cactus.

Say, where are you headed?

Sound: Realization

It's a "voluntary" appearance,

but we all know I won't be coming back.

But Mr. Marshall...

Why did you do it?
Sound: Whack

Why do prospectors head west?

Before you turn yourself in, Mr. Marshall...

would you mind telling us exactly what happened?

Before we interrogate Marshall, some light distractions.

My new favorite running background gag.

Look, that patrolman is saluting that other guy. He must be a detective!

So I cuff the lout, right? then you know what he says?

Oh, man. I hate it when that happens!

...

Sound: Realization

They make a good pair.

Moving on to evidence...

Sorry, Bambina.

I'm nothing more than a wanted man, now.

From cowboy to outlaw, just like that.

Like Lana, Jake Marshall has nothing to say to any of our evidence.

Let's see if we can get any more information about the night his brother was killed.

Something was fishy about that trial from the beginning.

What do you mean, "fishy"?

Some of the facts reported were inconsistent with the evidence we found.

The murder weapon? You mean... that switchblade knife with the broken tip?

That was Joe Darke's, all right.

A question...?
Sound: Realization

What does that mean?

...!

A suspicious autopsy report, you say? Maybe Lana was the one who messed with Mia's autopsy report, too, rather than Edgeworth. Also, was Lana really so crazy to nail the man who attacked her sister that she ignored this obvious sign that someone else actually killed Neil Marshall? Apparently so.

(Could the facts have been concealed with forged evidence...?)

That case left behind scars on all of us.

The "scars" that the SL-9 Incident left behind...

Sure would be nice to have some evidence we could use to talk about the forged autopsy report. We do have the not-really murder weapon itself, I suppose. That Lana hid in Edgeworth's tailpipe for some reason. Hey, I have an idea. Maybe Goodman was really stabbed with the SL-9 knife, and then when Lana saw it still in Goodman's chest, she panicked and stabbed Goodman again with Edgeworth's knife to try and cover it up?

I had just made detective when it went down.

It was our first case together...

He was 27 at the time.

That puts him at 4 years younger than Jake here.

The... "highest honor"? You mean the...

King of Prosecutors.
Sound: Realization

(I knew it...)

(Mr. Marshall must have really been close with his brother.)

That's right. It was the day of the evidence transferal.
Sound: Realization

I'm not following this episode another two years back in time to a third case.

Music: Silence

..! Interesting...
Sound: Light Bulb

I can't believe two years have gone by already.

(Apparently someone tried to stop you.)

(Detective Goodman was murdered... and the evidence locker was empty.)

Hey, maybe the two side-by-side murders in the prologue are also supposed to represent the first killing two years ago and the one now, with all the parallels between them. I should go back and watch that prologue video again when this episode is over.

Music: Jake Marshall ~ The Detective from the Wild West

Every detective involved in that investigation, save one, was... taken care of.

What about Detective Goodman?

Sound: Realization

"They"...?

Who are you talking about!?

Don't get upset, Bambina.

That case was the biggest step in both of their careers.

After the case ended, Lana transferred to the Prosecutor's Office, right?

?
Sound: Light Bulb

Everyone who knew her said so.

Sound: Realization

(Now that he mentions it, Ema said something like that too...)

Tell me... what happened to my sister!

I never found out.

(Lana's "secret"... It all started two years ago.)

Did Lana know that it wasn't Darke who killed Neil Marshall? And made a deal with Gant to make it look that way anyway, to put away the serial killer who had attacked her sister? She said she'd "sold her soul" in that trial...

We get a new scene after clearing all of Marshall's topics, starting with him hitting his flask while he still can.

Music: Silence

So there you have it.
Sound: Realization

It was certainly... enlightening.

There's one thing for sure I found out in court today.

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Sound: Light Bulb

No, I believe him. Gant has had his fingers all over this case from the beginning.

Sound: Pop

For some reason the game chooses now to break out a different animation of Marshall drinking from his flask. This time with him spitting out the top of it? Wait, was he just pretending to be drinking this whole time, and only now did he actually take the top off and drink for real?

Music: Silence

Too bad I won't be around to work with you...

Sound: Realization

Adios Bambina!

Marshall quietly fades away, leaving us alone in front of the police department.

Sure enough, we can't get into the evidence room today. No sign of the Chief's Office, either. It must be back at Criminal Affairs instead? Rather than go straight back there, let's check out the parking garage for the first time today.

No one's here today... Not even Ms. Starr.

That must be where the detectives are.

But we proved in court today that on the day of the crime,

no on was murdered in the evidence room at 5:15 PM.
Sound: Realization

But instead it looks like we just ended up making Lana look even more guilty.

Hang in there, Lana...

(I've got to find all the answers by tomorrow!)

These two (and/or the writers) are apparently losing track of where we are in this case. The current theory is that Goodman was murdered in the evidence room, just not at 5:15 PM. Maybe I confused them by going back to the original crime scene.

Only one thing different out here.

That's where we found that note.

"2/21 SL-9"... The SL-9 Incident.

The Joe Darke Killings.

(Everyone in this case played some part in that incident.)

(This has to be more than just sheer coincidence!)

Might as well stop by Edgeworth's office while we're in the area.

Mr. Edgeworth isn't here.

Maybe he's being questioned by an inquiry committee?

(He took a real beating in court today...)

I guess we'll just have to come back later.

Just a couple things to look at in here.

No kidding. Hey, there's a card on it...

Sound: Realization

("Wendy"...? I've heard that name somewhere before.)

Wow, I want one!

Huh? There's something written on the bottom of his foot.

Sound: Realization

Bonus for a shot of Ema mid-blink, like she's not happy that Edgeworth has an admirer.

Nope! Interesting thing to change! Did Oldbag send another round flowers+statue for Edgeworth after his hard day? Does she do this often? Does Edgeworth have a collection of Steel Samurai figures somewhere?

Whoa!

I guess you would feel... important.

Incidentally...

...

Sound: Light Bulb

(There's a 0.0002% chance you'd live?)

That's about the chance of a flatbed truck carrying a stack of mattresses and parking right under that window.

I think we've been everywhere we can go at least once now. Time to resume our search for the Chief's Office.

This place is always pretty empty, but today it's deserted.

That must mean everyone's busy solving crimes.

Sound: Realization

Uh... thanks. (Wow, he actually talked to us!)
Sound: Light Bulb

about Mr. Edgeworth, not to mention our statement to the media and tomorrow's trial...

(I think "festive" is the word usually used for those...)

Just use the connecting hallway to the other building and take the elevator to the top floor.

Sound: Realization

Ema! Once you've made the sale, stop selling!

I mean, we aren't police officers or anything.
Sound: Realization

Hey, you're right! You can't go in there! It's off limits!
Sound: Light Bulb

(Now I see where Detective Gumshoe gets his unique charm...)

Looks like we're just going to ignore the protests from the Chief of Detectives, now that we know where to go.

Music: Investigation - Opening

Off to investigate our third crime scene of the episode. Granted, this next one is two years old...

Uh... wow. Did not see there being a giant pipe organ in Gant's office.

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Whoa... Where am I?

Quite the office.

Check out that pipe organ. That's real, isn't it?

They used to call me "Little Miss Bach."

Music: Silence

Sound: Organ

The game's breaking out new sound effects all over this update, even pausing the music for this one. Way less annoying than Meekins's bullhorn, at least.

I never could remember where C was...

Sound: Realization

Oops, looks like we weren't quick enough.

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Chief Gant!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

It's the screwdriver in the hotel room drawer all over again. The rest of this investigation day is going to be trying to get access to that desk, isn't it?

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

Uh... no, I haven't. I've been kind of busy lately.

and Lana's provocative statement.

"Provocative statement"... oh, you mean about the forged evidence.
Sound: Realization

My, how time flies!

Hang on a second - that jar in the background, is that the same one we found in the evidence room? And Neil has that trophy, that we know he won the day he was killed. So the jar was definitely broken later that day? Wait, that prosecutor trophy, did that always have a broken sword on it, too? And why is there a suit of golden armor holding a suspicious-looking blade there? I have the sudden urge to spray it with luminol. Was this picture taken in Gant's office?

(So this is Mr. Marshall's brother... Prosecutor Neil Marshall...)

... (Something's not right with this picture.)

(I can't quite seem to put my finger on it though...)
Sound: Realization

Sound: Select Jingle

I think we'll be getting a lot of use out of this picture tomorrow.

I think that's the same suit of armor in the background as was in that picture? Kind of hard for me to tell.

Music: Silence

Oh, don't mind us, we won't be spraying down the entire place with luminol or anything.

Boo.

Oh...
Sound: Realization

But this office...

it was a crime scene two years ago, wasn't it?

Sound: Whack

All the same, we'd still like to have a look around.

Sound: Realization

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

...!

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

This guy is either guilty as fuck or the game is doing a great job faking me out again.

We find ourselves back outside. Gant's music is still playing.

It seems that case isn't over with yet, after all.

What do you mean?
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Chief Gant denied our request to search the "crime scene."

You mean like, a clue!?
Sound: Light Bulb

(There's got to be a way we can get inside the Chief's office...)

Music: Investigation - Core

Well. All that activity must've unlocked something somewhere else. Where should we go next?
