Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

by DKII

Part 148: Episode 5, Day 3, Investigation: Responsibility

Part 148: Episode 5, Day 3, Investigation: Responsibility

Only one man could convince Gumshoe to risk losing his job for us.

Music: Silence

(I wonder if Edgeworth is back yet.)

Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Investigation - Opening

Sound: Stab

Sound: Realization

I don't show a lot of Phoenix's lines directly like this on investigation days, but you can see behind the text box a crumpled piece of paper has appeared.

Tough day in court, huh?

Hmph.

What's another allegation to me?

(That's Edgeworth for you...)

(Always trying to hide his real feelings.)

Don't mind us, just going to reach behind you for that paper...

(I wonder what he was writing before?)

Sound: Light Bulb

Are you crazy? Edgeworth is sitting right there!

Just distract him. I'll check it out.

Uh... Hey, Edgeworth.
Sound: Stab

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection
Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Realization

Well, that didn't work.

(He didn't even look.)

Sound: Light Bulb

If you're having trouble reading, I'll read it for you.

I kind of want to skip ahead to Edgeworth's games.

Music: Recollection ~ The DL-6 Incident

"Resignation"!? Edgeworth, you don't mean...?
Sound: Whack

I'm tired, Wright.

Time to quit and become a defense attorney, like you always wanted as a kid? Wright & Edgeworth Co. has a good ring to it!

But Mr. Edgeworth! None of it is your fault!
Sound: Whack

I know the path I've walked. You don't need to tell me.

Cool callback to what he used to say as a kid when getting awards. As Phoenix explained to us when we looked at his trophy yesterday.

I can't forgive myself for what I've done...

In Edgeworth's eyes, everyone is guilty. Including himself. Maybe especially himself.

(Uh oh. I think he's serious!)

Music: Silence

(This Letter of Resignation... I wonder if I can use it for anything?)

Sound: Select Jingle

Well I think we found our Gumshoe motivation. I'm not sure if we even have to talk to Edgeworth now.

Music: Investigation - Opening

Continuing to look around first...

Yeah, you'd think he'd want to show this thing off more than that giant Steel Samurai.

...

What is it?

Of course it is. You know that!

Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Something that looked like that?

Yeah, only different.

Now, where was that...?

Another good use of putting hints in seemingly throwaway scenes.

Music: Investigation - Opening

Before I forget, let's look more closely at this letter we just got.

(He really wrote a resignation letter...)
Sound: Light Bulb

Still, it wasn't his fault...

Someone has to be held responsible. That's how it is in the grown-up world.

...And that someone would be Lana Skye, no?

Sound: Whack

Well, not everyone sees it that way.

(That's one tough grown-up world there...)

We'll do presenting later, let's try talking first.

There's no excuse for what I've done.

That's what it all breaks down to, and nothing I can do can erase that fact.

But you didn't know, did you?

I mean, that the evidence was falsified.

If that bond is broken, we stand to lose everything.

I mean, that's a nice sentiment, but it still seems like heads should be rolling over at the Police Department instead.

That fact remains the same no matter what excuses I might have.

Mr. Edgeworth...

I take pride in my work.

(Even Edgeworth can't keep this kind of emotion bottled up...)

Are you up for the trial tomorrow?

Hmph.

Phoenix has a bigger crush on Edgeworth than Ema does right now.

To be honest, you're getting on my nerves.

But Mr. Edgeworth! You can't just walk out on the trial...

I'll bet that's what my superious are banking on.

Aha! Some motive for Gant screwing with Edgeworth all episode! Could Gant have been trying to get Edgeworth to quit so that this trial is screwed up and everyone stops looking into both this case and the SL-9 Incident!

*squints closely* That looks like the same document that Gant was reading earlier and stuffed into his desk.

What do you mean?
Sound: Realization

Most lists...

run twice as long.

It's only half as long as most lists? (That is odd...)

So does Gant have the real/original evidence list in his office maybe?

I became prosecutor for that case.

use the evidence I was given to prove the suspect guilty!

That was really the only thing on my mind at the time.

And who better than von Karma's mini-me to use as an enthusiastic patsy?

(That picture... Something seemed strange about it...)

Looks like we have a couple things we want to present to Edgeworth now. But one more topic first!

Could you tell us again what happened that day?

The day Detective Goodman was murdered?

You were participating in a ceremony over at the station, right?

Because you were awarded this?

...Is that why he was given the award, to lure him to the Police Department that day?

I finished up at the office in the morning, then drove over to the Police Department.

You, "finished up" at the office?
Sound: Realization

Yes. Just odds and ends- clerical stuff.

That is, until I was asked to take something back.

Take something back?

This.

Sound: Light Bulb

Yes. It was a piece of evidence in a case that was closed half a year ago.

(That's the story we heard yesterday...)

So you came back here to the Prosecutor's Office because the Chief asked you to?

That's right.

...

So there's an important distinction. Edgeworth only went back to the office because of Gant's intervention. Did Gant set up Lana, luring her to the parking garage to discover Goodman in Edgeworth's trunk? Was she supposed to get Edgeworth accused of the crime, but ended up confessing to it herself instead? I'm having trouble figuring out what Gant intended to happen with this case, given that he seems to be both setting up and screwing up this case at the same time.

Let's move on to our ever-growing evidence list. Only a few things have new text this time around, but we also have new items he hasn't seen before.

You know, it wouldn't hurt if you put this up somewhere, like on a shelf.

What do you mean, "anymore"?

He's asking me?
Sound: Realization

quote:

Original line: "That makes me kind of mad." Definitely more personality in the new version.

Actually, something's been troubling me about this shield.

Sound: Realization

Different...?

(I guess I'd better present this other shield...)

Well there's a blatant hint.

Hey, don't look at me.

Yes, I went into the evidence room on the day of the crime.

Chief Gant asked me to do something.

I have a locker in there as well.

Did you notice anything amiss when you were in the evidence room?

I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Did the killer get lucky that Edgeworth didn't notice the bloody handprint on Gumshoe's locker? Or did he want Edgeworth to notice it? I think I'm getting paranoid.

...

and chat with you about the case over a cup of tea.

But this isn't related to the case, remember? You said so yourself.
Sound: Realization

So I did...

...The game totally faked me out again there, making me think Edgeworth was just giving his generic reaction to stuff he doesn't care about.

He asked you to bring it here from the Police Department...

The Chief is a very competent man...

but sometimes he does things that don't make any sense.

...

Sound: Realization

(A certain detective comes to mind...)

No being mean to Gumshoe!

Oddly, the evidence locker gives the same scene as the ID card record.

Maybe now Edgeworth will open up a bit more...

This picture was hanging on the wall in Chief Gant's office.

Looks like this was taken when he received the King of Prosecutors trophy.

Sound: Light Bulb

Yes?

Sound: Realization

Yes, you're right. ...

Ah, I remember now.

Remember what?
Sound: Light Bulb

quote:

Original line: "That was the official prosecutor trophy used until that time." Kind of awkward wording that doesn't at all get the same point across.

A story?

(Sounds interesting.) Would you mind telling it to us?

It's simple, really.

Sound: Realization

We got a new topic there, but there's one more thing we can show Edgeworth first.

They say where there's smoke, there's fire.

Edgeworth...

Sound: Realization

But Mr. Edgeworth! You were only doing your job!

That hasn't changed.

Forgiving myself... is something I cannot do.

(Uh oh. I think he's serious!)

Edgeworth the edgelord.

(This Letter of Resignation... I wonder if I can use it for anything?)

Yes, yes, we'll get there eventually.

One last thing to talk about...

This award originates from an ancient Chinese tale.

Music: Silence

Me? Oh, uh... sure. Everyone knows that! Why don't you tell it though... for Ema's sake.
Sound: Light Bulb

Very well.

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Interesting choice of music. I guess telling a story and giving a testimony are kind of similar?

One day, he presented the king with two items.

The second was a shield he claimed could withstand any weapon.

Hmm... Wait a minute.
Sound: Realization

Phoenix quickly sees the contradiction here. It's the old "Unstoppable Force" versus the "Immovable Object". Both can't be true simultaneously; if the one were used on the other, one of them would have to win, right?

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection

Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered - Variation

Sound: Drama Pound

The only way that scene could have been more perfect would be if they had Phoenix's objection sprite over a black background afterwards.

Sound: Realization

Never mind, that dig from Edgeworth was even better.

Anyway, as you mentioned, the very descriptions of these items discredit them both.

And thus, the Chinese word for "contradiction" was born.

The word is "Máodùn" which basically would literally translate to spear-shield. Not sure why the localizers chose the word "halberd" here; that merchant is pretty clearly holding a spear.

Music: Silence

Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

The ancient tale ends with the merchant at a loss for words,

even if it results in something as ugly as this.

Wow.

Thanks, Mr. Edgeworth! I learned something new today!

Music: Investigation - Opening

That's funny...

Sound: Realization

...

You'll have to ask Chief Gant.

(Chief Gant...)

I wonder if we'll learn the rest of that story at trial tomorrow...

Sound: Select Jingle

A sudden evidence update indicates we will...

Let's head back to Gumshoe!

Music: Silence

Or we could get interrupted on the way there.

Excuse me...

Sound: Realization

I really don't want to talk to her again, but now that we know more about the SL-9 Incident maybe she'll open up a bit about it?

Music: Happy People

Ms. Starr! (I guess she's out of lunches.)
Sound: Light Bulb

You certainly are the curious sort, aren't you?

I don't think she likes us very much.

Still, I never thought you'd go digging up that case from two years ago.

Everyone in this trial was involved in the SL-9 Incident.

Not only that, but the murder occurred on the very day the evidence from that case was

due for transferal. This can't all be attributed to mere "coincidence."

...

You know, that little scene I happened to witness?

Music: Silence

Roast beef is meant to be savored when eaten.

(Ms. Starr's hatred toward Lana...)

(It all dates back to two years ago!)

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Nothing new to see in the garage, so let's present stuff!

I don't have anything else to tell you.

Ms. Starr...

(Talk about cheap...)

She's going to be disappointed tomorrow if I have anything to say about it.

Despite saying she has nothing more to say to us for any evidence we present her, there are some topics we can chat with her about here.

Half a year!? Gumshoe made it sound like everything went down on one horrible day!

Still, I don't think I was ever more alive than I was then.

Those days were steamier than a bowl of hot gravy!

You mean, because of his brother's death?

They were close, those two.

So wait, did they tail Darke for half a year after Neil was killed? Despite supposedly catching him red-handed with his knife in Neil's back? Are all of Angel Starr's stories as full as holes as the ones in this episode?

Seeing Jake like that made her all the more desperate.

"Her"...?
Sound: Realization

Lana Skye.

My sister...?
Sound: Light Bulb

Of course they were led by that legendary duo.

Sound: Wipe

You know, if Ms. Starr had such a legendary reputation as the "Cough-Up Queen," why wasn't she in the room when Darke was being questioned? I bet her reputation is all in her own head.

That legendary pair was the reason we were able to keep up our investigation.

You mean, with the forging of the evidence?

Don't get me wrong. Joe Darke got what he deserved.

Sound: Whack

Items our team never found would suddenly appear, while other items were kept secret.

But you don't have proof anything illegal was done...

Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

most without even so much as an explanation.

Lana always wanted to be a prosecutor.

Nothing's quite as simple as it appears.
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

She was being used?

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Damon Gant and Lana Skye...

quote:

Rare typo there, and it was introduced in the new translation. Original line was: "Two years ago Gant was Chief Detective, and Lana second in command. They were the best." There are a large number of edits related to Gant being Chief Detective in the original script rather than Deputy Chief of Police, and fixing this one introduced a new typo instead.

They solved all kinds of cases together, didn't they?
Sound: Light Bulb

His "magnetism"?
Sound: Realization

By that I mean his ability to attract evidence.

("Incredible evidence"? You mean...)

Oh, yes. There were rumors about him even back then.

No one dared confront him, though.

(I take it she's talking about forged evidence.)

The game hasn't really confirmed that Gant is our killer, but it sure seems to be dedicated to making us not like him today.

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Really?

Oh yes... myself included. I was a fool, really.

Did Angel and Lana used to be close? Angel seems to have taken the whole thing very personally.

That's why she was so concerned for Jake.
Sound: Realization

Mr. Marshall...

If it wasn't for her, I don't think Jake would ever have recovered from his shock.

That's what makes it all the more infuriating.

Ms. Starr...

Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Why did she have to turn so cold after that...?

...

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Lana transferred to the Prosecutor's Office two years ago, didn't she?

Chief...

There was only one thing left for him to control,

and then no one could stand in his way:

the Prosecutor's Office.
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

What? You mean... That's why Lana was transferred!?
Sound: Light Bulb

That must have been his goal all along.

Music: Investigation - Core

Sound: Whack

I don't know, but one thing's for sure.

Ever since that case ended, she's never been the same.

It's only logical to conclude...

(At last...)

(I'm finally getting close to the bottom of this ugly mess.)

Thank you, Ms. Starr.

You listen to me, Rookie.

I hope you turn out to be a better chef than I've been...
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

That's all for Angel Starr. Let's see if our Gumshoe-leverage works.

Oh, you're back.
Sound: Light Bulb

You're still here?

Brewing coffee, copying files...

I'm turning into a regular DJ!
Sound: Whack

You're a "DJ" as well?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Light Bulb

I'm glad Phoenix explained that, I was stumped for a second there.

...

Oh, that DJ...
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Light Bulb

It'd be my neck on the line.

(That office is the last crime scene in the SL-9 Incident.)

(I have to take a look in there!)

Well, we're here for one thing and one thing only.

Yes, this guy.

That must be one of the detectives.

He's mumbling something to himself.

:stare:

"Quiet, Jean Marc. Words will just spoil the moment. Now hold me close..."

Yes, this approach allows for much more intrigue.

...

It seems he's given up on the mystery genre.

All right, back to Gumshoe. All of his topics are still the same, as are most of his evidence reactions. Except for this one!

Hey, that's it!
Sound: Light Bulb

Were you at the awards ceremony, Detective Gumshoe?

Ah... congratulations.

Sound: Light Bulb

Uh, yeah! Everyone knows that!

Sound: Realization

He had a thing for shields, see...?

That's not exactly the version we heard.
Sound: Realization

No, but this one sounds more exciting!
Sound: Realization

quote:

When we were visiting Edgeworth, I wondered if we could just pick up the resignation letter and skip out on talking to him. However, it doesn't work, as Gumshoe wouldn't even be here. We have to clear Edgeworth's fourth topic (the one we get for showing him the "Gant Team Picture") to get Gumshoe to come back. However we can skip the rest of Edgeworth's topics, and don't need to talk to Angel Starr at all!

Now that we've re-established how awesome Gumshoe is, let's emotionally blackmail him.

Sound: Light Bulb

...

..

.

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization
Sound: Whack
Sound: Drama Pound

Is he ever not serious?

I can't believe they've pushed him this far...

Mr. Edgeworth really feels responsible.

Music: Recollection ~ The DL-6 Incident

But I know different now!

Sound: Whack

but we just...

we betrayed him!

Detective...

I don't show a lot of short lines in general, let alone as animations, but Gumshoe's second three-sprite silent line was too good to not share.

Music: Silence

That's it.
Sound: Light Bulb

I've made up my mind!

But...
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

Music: Recollection ~ The DL-6 Incident

We can't do that. If someone found out...
Sound: Whack

Little late to be claiming the moral high ground after the emotional blackmail.

Sound: Whack

Look at me. It's no secret I'm already out of the loop.

After all, I'm friends with Mr. Edgeworth.

(What...?)

Sound: Whack

Music: Silence

All right, Detective. Thank you.

Sound: Select Jingle

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

That's all for Gumshoe. We accomplished our main goal, however. The Chief's Office is once again open to us!
