Part 151: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Former: Trip to YesteryearMusic: Silence

We learned a lot about Goodman's murder in our investigation yesteray. I don't think any of it is going to matter much at first today, though. I don't know what to expect here, really.

Wait, do they let the defendants out of the detention center to just wander over to the courthouse on their own?

Has Edgeworth also figured it out?

Is Phoenix's whole strategy to get Gant charged with evidence tampering to reveal his ID number? That's... actually not bad?

Sound: Whack
We've fairly well-proven that Goodman was killed in the evidence room, not the parking garage. And that it wasn't Lana's ID on the record accessing the evidence room. She's just about the only person that couldn't have killed Goodman, but she'll still be found guilty anyway if we can't nail the real killer.

Edgeworth seems to realize the whole setup today is ridiculous, too.

Edgeworth fades out...

This development seems unlikely to be good for us.

Looks like just like last episode, we'll spend the last day of trial grilling our own client out of their confession.

Sound: Light Bulb
Yeah I bet you do.

Well, here we go.

While not ideal, that's the same story she's been telling since she was first arrested.

Looks like we're already in the thick of it.

...I really should have seen that coming. I'm not sure why she let us represent her in the first place, really.

Sound: Light Bulb

I'm pretty sure there are legal reasons to deny a sudden change in representation like this one, particularly if it's followed by a sudden confession without even a plea deal. It reeks of illegal pressuring.

I really thought we'd be having Lana testify her confession for us to cross-examine, but I guess not?

I would ask what that little detail has to do with anything all of the sudden, but Edgeworth seems to be on our side here so I'll just shut up.

There's an interesting dynamic here, if we assume that Edgeworth knows that Gant is the real killer at this point. Gant has been screwing with Edgeworth all episode, and now Edgeworth is finally going to fight back.

Really, Edgeworth was going to resign anyway, so what does he have to lose here?

Sound: Realization
All right, time to make a teenager relive her trauma! I wonder who Edgeworth's first witness was going to be initially?

Go away Lana, you're clearly compromised here.

This is Edgeworth's world, we're all just living in it.

Now we have to take Gant down, for Edgeworth's sake. A cause I'm much more in alignment with.

What an interesting phrase there. Usually it's "take the bull by the horns" here. I wonder if that one translated differently from Japanese?

Oh, right, witness testimony coming.

Music: Trial

Edgeworth finally gets a cooperative witness! Kind of; she still didn't really answer the question. Her occupation is "student".

Edgeworth doesn't look very sorry.

...Did Edgeworth just bluff the judge there? Or has he put it all together himself?

So wait, he took the elevator to the top floor where Gant's office is? I thought earlier they said he ran straight from the questioning room to the office, which happened to be across from the elevator. Maybe Darke really was targeting Gant's office all along?

Sound: Realization
Explains how Darke got access to an office that needs a detective's ID to open the door.

Original line: "(Gant was there too...?)" I guess the original script had forgotten that we'd already heard Gant was there once before?

Just noticing that Ema's sprites are great for both investigation conversation and testifying.

Sound: Realization

Interesting one to prompt on. Let's keep going.

Sound: Realization

I'm surprised the picture is being brought up so soon. Onward!

We can stop questioning Ema at either prompt, but since when has Phoenix displayed any empathy?
(Poor Ema. These memories are really torturing her. She's been through enough already.)
Thank you, Ema. You don't have to go into that.
Now then, please tell us.
This scene that imprinted an image in your mind...
Can you please describe it to us?
The man...
And yes, we get the same scene for backing off each time. We just get taken back to the cross, and Ema's last line of testimony.

Sound: Gavel

New statement! It replaces the last one we just dealt with. We of course immediately press on it.

Sound: Realization

Sound: Realization

Now I'm confused. It seems we have two things to present here.

Sound: Wipe

Hmm. That's the end of the pressing.

I see a couple of possibilities, amongst our vast horde of evidence. So what should we present here?
