Part 161: Episode 5, Final Day, Trial Latter 2: Traps within Traps

Seriously, though, how many times have we presented this damn jar now?

Anyway, despite Lana's statements, it's pretty clear that one piece - the one we found in Gant's safe - wasn't wiped clean. We can actually present the jar on any of Lana's last three statements.

Music: Silence

What?

In the Chief's safe?
Sound: Realization

But how...?

(I knew it! She really didn't know!)

I guess she wasn't paying attention in the last part of the trial.

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Realization

Music: Suspense

But the witness just testified...
Sound: Whack

Yes, which leaves us with only one explanation.

Sound: Desk Slam

On the night Prosecutor Marshall was murdered...

Music: Silence

Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Objection

This case has me all tied up in knots. I need to stop believing the serial liars.

Music: Objection!

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel x 3

But couldn't the defendant have simply missed a piece?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Desk Slam

I'm afraid that's unlikely.

Sound: Objection

That may well be, but everyone makes mistakes. Even I once wasted an entire day
Sound: Whack

Sound: Desk Slam

Have you forgotten, Your Honor?

Sound: Realization

Oh, that...
Sound: Light Bulb

There's no way a name could have been written on a shattered jar.

Sound: Objection

I hope you're not implying this "person" was Chief Gant. At the time, he was looking

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection

Sound: Damage 2

The judge freakout using just his normal head shake sprites... :bravo:

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Realization

Okay, favorite sequence of the game right there.

Sound: Realization

Sound: Realization

Question:

What is this action called?

Fabrication of evidence.

More like hiding of evidence, but okay.

Music: Investigation - Core

Sound: Stab

In light of what happened afterwards,

isn't it clear?

What happened afterwards...?

The jar was already in pieces when Lana found it; did she still know it said "Ema" on it? Otherwise I'm not sure why she would think Ema had killed Marshall, rather than Darke having shoved him into the armor's sword. Ema and Darke were both unconscious. Maybe Marshall was still alive, and told Lana?

Determined to help her sister,

she sought Gant's aid.

sparing Ema. And therein lies the reason!
Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Objection

Sound: Stab 2

Hell Lana just bit her thumb so hard she spurted out blood.

N-no... I... I did it on my own...
Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Whack

I...

I can't watch you suffer any more for my sake...
Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Objection

Don't believe anything Mr. Wright says!

Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Realization

Slander! We are paragons of truth!

...

!
Sound: Light Bulb

(Wait a minute...)

Music: Silence

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Guilty

Huh?

Is something wrong, Mr. Wright?

Lana...

may be right after all.
Sound: Realization

! What do you mean, Wright?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Desk Slam

Ms. Skye! Please testify once more!

But...

then Ema's accidental killing of Prosecutor Marshall...

Sound: Drama Pound

Oh! Wait a minute, that's right! If Gant got in there ahead of Lana, who knows what he messed with! Hey, maybe the parallel to Mia's killing is even more exact than I thought, and Gant actually faked Ema's name on the jar, too! Maybe Gant even killed Marshall himself, like I originally thought! This episode is so twisty with its fakeouts!

Music: Suspense

B-but,
Sound: Light Bulb

I do remember knocking over Mr. Marshall...

Ms. Skye! If you will...
Sound: Whack

There's nothing to be afraid of anymore.
Sound: Realization

...!

This cross-examination may not change a thing.

Sound: Desk Slam

... Very well.

I'll testify...
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

about what I really saw.

Sound: Gavel

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Allegro

When I arrived,

I found Mr. Marshall's body impaled on that suit of armor's sword.

That's why I erased all the evidence that linked her to the murder.

But if it all really was a fabrication,

Ema might be innocent!
Sound: Desk Slam

Music: Silence

I don't see anything there, unfortunately. Maybe pressing will reveal something.

Unbelievable!

The body was impaled on the armor's sword?

...

Actually,

I do have proof.
Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Lana you devil.

What?
Sound: Light Bulb

To me!?

I thought it might be needed.

Sound: Whack

Lana must have known...

Sound: Gavel

Music: Logic and Trick

(I don't remember receiving any pictures from Lana...)

I seem to remember getting something from her then...

Let's check that evidence again!
Sound: Light Bulb

The game cheats hard here. We're forced into the Court Record, but without the option to present anything. Instead, we have to look at this book Lana gave to us via Gumshoe earlier.

Outside of this special prompt, looking closer at the book just shows the same page of text as when we first got it. Now, though, we can physically examine the book.

Our cursor lights up on the back...

Sound: Realization

Well looky there.

Sound: Realization

One fact immediately jumps out - Neil Marshall's vest is indeed missing part of it, around the same size as the piece of cloth we found earlier with Ema's handprint. Neil also has blood all along his front, likely coughed up from being stabbed in the lung. Now, notice how the blood is present on his shirt, behind the hole in his vest? (There was also no blood on the piece of cloth we found, despite a well-preserved handprint.) Wouldn't that mean he coughed up the blood after Gant had cut out that part of his vest? Meaning, Neil Marshall was still alive when Gant was in the room?

Music: Suspense

Oh... Oh my...
Sound: Realization

Sound: Light Bulb

No other detective saw the crime scene like this...

Sound: Select Jingle

You know, Lana, this day would have been a lot faster if you'd led with this information at the beginning. Ah well.

*gasp* Mr. Wright!
Sound: Light Bulb

(The cloth we found inside Chief Gant's safe!)
Sound: Realization

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Realization

Whosever fingerprints those are must be

the real murderer!

(What!? But those fingerprints...)

Music: Silence

(They're yours, Ema!)

Sound: Desk Slam

Anyway, let's get on with the cross-examination.

Sound: Gavel

Very well. The defense may now begin its cross-examination.

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Allegro

Sound: Objection

To be clear, that was not an unusually quick press by me.

Sound: Shock 2 x 3

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Drama Pound

quote:

Fun fact - I went back and tried pressing or presenting on that first statement of Lana's cross before the interruption, but the game didn't allow the input. It's a fake cross!

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Come now, Udgey.

Chief Gant...
Sound: Realization

What, now you want to make me out as the bad guy too?

I'm afraid it's too late for that.

What?

You already declined to testify.

Sound: Realization

...

(This must be that "risk" we were talking about earlier...)

Just sit back, relax...

:allears: This system needs a magnificant asshole like Edgeworth to fight against it.

Music: Silence

Sound: Damage 2

...Boss phase 2 complete?

...

Ah, so what?
Sound: Realization

You think I'm worried?

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sorry to disappoint you,

Sound: Realization

Music: Suspense

What do you mean?

The evidence will do all the talking for me.

Yes, that's true...

Wait! You mean...
Sound: Light Bulb

No, I don't.
Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

But someone does.

"Someone"...?
Sound: Realization

Ah, Gant probably thinks he has us pretty well-trapped now. But his trap is just going to be the very thing that proves him guilty.

...!

Why have you been keeping quiet about it?

You do have something to show us, right?

Conclusive evidence that leaves no room for doubt!
Sound: Drama Pound

I-is this true, Mr. Wright!?
Sound: Whack

...

Sound: Wipe

I think I'm ahead of Phoenix for once. We'll have to let this one play out.

Sound: Gavel

Sound: Whack

(What do I do now!?)

(Should I present that piece of evidence?)

I'm not even going to pretend I don't know what evidence he's talking about. But is now the right time to show it?
