Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Part 31: Episode 2, Day 2, Investigation: Victory?

Part 31: Episode 2, Day 2, Investigation: Victory?

All right, let's go see what dirt we can dig up on White.

Hard to imagine a murder took place here.

Mr. Grossberg said there would be clues...

Maybe I should have another look.

Music: Investigation - Opening

We looked at the bookcase of files earlier, but didn't have enough specific information to really figure anything out from what's here, so the game kept it from us. Now, though...

They're in alphabetical order. Let's take a look...

Let's see. "D" for "DL-6 Incident"? "R" for "Redd"? How about "W" for "White"?

...

!

Was it taken...?

Well, that would have been too easy.

We get dumped back out to the examine screen and have to dive back in to get back to this prompt. Let's see what's in the "A-I" range this time.

:ughh:

I didn't even think of looking for "Fey", good eye Phoenix!

We didn't come all this way to not snoop in Mia's files.

"I was determined to find the ones who had made my mother blame herself in this way."

"Using the power that runs in my family, I held an audience with the dead."

"Finally, the names of two men surfaced."

...Is that why Mia became a lawyer? To go work for Grossberg and dig for clues?

"The other was the man who sold that information to the press."

"His name is..."

Ugh, of course it does. White was thorough in the few minutes he had to clean out these records.

...

So Mia knew Grossberg...

quote:

Leaving this section alone is pointless, but here you go:

I don't think it has much to do with the current case.

I'd be interested to know what it contains... but I'll leave it alone for now.

Guess we're stuck with "J-S" then.

Nothing much in here.

Not like we have any other options, keep reading!

*sigh*

Well, no harm in flipping through a bit, I guess...

Doesn't seem to really apply here, but why would Mia have a bunch of suicide files?

Ohhhh....

...

Music: Silence

...!

There's writing on most of these in pencil.

White drove them all to...

Music: Investigation - Core

...

Hmm... let's find the most disturbing one...

That's an interesting motive for White to have committed the murder, but not really the kind of evidence I was hoping for.

quote:

Deciding not to skim through this section:

Nah... this is taking too long. Later.

*yawn* I've never been good at reading these things.

Phoenix we need to work on your work ethic.

We can keep looking through the files though.

Yes yes please continue.

The only one that's different is the one we just got some "evidence" from.

Hmm... not much in the "J-S" section.

I think that's enough reading for today.

quote:

Backing out from looking at the files again:

I don't see much point in checking files that are missing all the key parts.

Argh. I give up.

We're not really due for a break, so I guess I'll pick our next destination myself. Detention Center and Gatewater Hotel still don't have anything. Let's go talk to Grossberg and see if he has any more advice for us.

So she was investigating Redd White, as I expected.

(Not a bad idea...)

Forget waiting for court, let's go shove it in his face now! (I'm out of other ideas, anyway!)

Music: Silence

Sorry, but there's something I have to ask you.

Mr. Lawyer,

I really hate having to repeat myself...

If you try my patience further, I fear a nasty accident may occur.

Do I make myself clear?

(Transparent...)

We're off to a great start, he already threatened to kill us. Phoenix really should just be wearing a wire at all times.

Music: Investigation - Core

Anyway our conversation check marks are gone, let's see what's going on here.

(I think we're past needing to talk about April May.)

(I've got to put this guy on the spot, and quick!)

Hmm? What's the matter? You seem... distressed!

Just what I need to get my ire up again, let's try another!

(This guy is a pro at pulling the wool over people's eyes.)

(I've got to put him on the spot, and quick!)

Stop that! Your hot gaze is giving me goose bumps!

I like to imagine Phoenix just silently glaring at Mr. White during these.

(There's no point asking someone this crooked a straight question!)

(I need some evidence I can use as ammo...)

What's wrong? Is something stuck to my face?

Why yes! There's my eyes, and my nose, and my mouth...

It is okay to indulge in my cosmopolitan sense of humor. I will not think less of you.

:argh: That's it!

Take this attorney's badge!

I have no intention of parleying with you about this matter.

Everything we had before (including the photo, if we had kept it) gets the same response. But as you can tell from the conversations above, we need to present our new evidence here. Frankly it seems like a terrible idea to be alone with the murderer and shoving our wild speculation in his face, but we're out of other options.

(This is the only clue that Mia left me...)

(I'd better make this one count!)

Mr. White... see this?

...

He was embezzling secret government funds.

Then, one day, word got leaked to the press.

The very next day he took his own life.

I found this article in Mia's office.

Miss Mia...?

She had a file filled with articles like this.

...!

You were blackmailing him!

Blackmail?

You were involved in all of the suicide cases that Mia investigated!

This company is built on blackmail!

I'm right, aren't I?

What a bizarre accusation.

Mr. Wrong...

No no no. I think not!

You should be searching for the one who killed Miss Mia!

I'm looking at him, pal.

quote:

Let's guess that Mr. White bribed the politician instead.

You bribed him!

B-bribed!?

...

What exactly has let you to say this?

(Um... gee, that's a good question. I guess I got ahead of myself there...)

Hmph. You certainly have an active imagination.

(Dammit!)

Getting this one wrong just brings us back to the court record to re-present the newspaper clipping and try again.

quote:

Maybe Mr. White was spying on the politician?

You were spying on him, weren't you?

"Spying"...?

You snooped on him, and found out about the embezzlement.

Then, when you revealed it, he was driven to suicide!

Mr. Lawyer.

I know nothing of this.

And, even in the highly unlikely event that I did do such a thing...

All I would have done is provide "information". That is not a crime in this country.

(Gah! This guy's as cool as a cucumber...!)

We're then brought back to the evidence page to try again.

Mr. Wrong will be leaving now.

Mr. White is apparently done with us. And still getting our name wrong on purpose.

He's right, and Phoenix can tell it better than I can:

You are absolutely right.

I should be looking for the killer now.

He's sitting right in front of me.

quote:

The other option is basically the same:

You're wrong, Mr. White.

Excuse me?

What I should be doing now is going after you!

We continue the same with either choice from here.

Mia was on to you. She was keeping tabs.

For this reason you had April May tapping her phone.

So, the culprit would be...?

...

I would feel a lot better about this speech if it were happening in a courtroom in front of a lot of witnesses.

...

Music: Silence

The secretary gets beeped again.

We won't be needing an escort for Mr. Wrong.

Music: Suspense

Huh? He gonna sick Edgeworth on us?

Hello. Chief Prosecutor?

I've changed my mind. I want to testify tomorrow.

Oh good another sham witness to frame Maya. At least we'll get you on the stand!

And, thus, as a very important witness, I would like to testify.

Oh, and one other thing.

Send the police over here right away.

Wait, what?

Are you even listening?

He's saying we did it!?

What!?

I'm mildly disturbed by what "those" could refer to, but too distracted to think about it right now.

Chief Prosecutor.

Ah shit he has the chief prosecutor in his pocket, of course.

I'm telling you to send the police, now!

...

Did I not tell you, Mr. Wrong?

You are a mere lawyer!

You know, if we're going to take the fall for a murder anyway, we might as well actually commit one. Let's start with this guy. Those trophies could probably manage it.

How dare you!

The case is as good as settled. No lawyer of any worth will defend you.

I have friends in the local lawyer's association, you see.

(I... I feel faint.)

There's a crash, and then...

Music: Silence

I refuse to believe Gumshoe is a part of this mess.

Aaa! Butz! Hairy Butz!

Didn't we already do this bit? Fuck that was 15 updates ago. This episode is insane!

Detective Gumshoe.

W-what!?

Take this despicable human being into custody.

...

Farewell, Mr. Wrong!

One more shot of that smug face so we don't forget it.

I suppose, technically this means Maya goes free and we won? Or maybe he'll claim it was a team effort and we both did it?

Now that I've calmed down a bit, it's not all bad. The same evidence that was used to frame Maya could work in our favor now. And we'll get Mr. White on the stand, at least. I bet we don't have to spend too long in jail before the trial starts, too!

Right, we got arrested on September 7th, and it's now September 8th. The trial is probably tomorrow, then?

Thanks for the confirmation. Hopefully they didn't confiscate all the evidence in our pockets.

White's going to set a trap for me.

An attorney was assigned to me by the state, yesterday.

I refused. I had an idea.

Yeah, we know, he's going to represent himself and make everyone look silly.

I really hope Maya is here to visit us and not here detained with us.

Wright!

Mr. Wright!

Music: Detention Center - Jailer's Elegy

Apparently the detention center looks exactly the same on the other side of the glass?

Well, we accomplished our primary objective - get Maya off the hook. Now we just have to save our own skin.

Just now, yes. It's all thanks to you!

Hah. Now I'm afraid we've switched places.

Oh, geez, she didn't even know.

...

I don't believe it!

My sister...

And now you!

Mr. Wright, please tell me, is there anything I can do?

Look, if we just kill Mr. White, this whole house of cards comes tumbling down. So, Maya, here's what I want you to do...

Okay, those are slightly less insane options. But only slightly. Let's break out of here first, then we can take care of Mr. White.

Yeah. Tonight's our only chance!

Alright!

Huh?

quote:

Maybe we can have Maya defend us? She can't do worse than we've done today.

Alright, you can be my defense lawyer tomorrow!

Alright!

Huh?

Leave it to me! I am Mia's sister, after all! Lawyership runs in our blood!

(Wasn't it ghost powers that ran in your blood...?)

I'd better run to the bookstore and pick up a copy of "Law for Rookies."

Sounds like a plan!

quote:

Let's just have her cheer us on instead...

Well, you could cheer for me in court.

Cheer for you? You mean... like a cheerleader?

Huh? Um, yeah, like that.

Alright! Leave it to me!

Huh?

I'd better go get a uniform and some pom-poms...!

And she's off again.

Maya is 100% on board with this plan and seems to have already left to go enact it.

W-wait. Wait wait wait.

I'm kidding! It was a joke!

(And there really isn't anything you can do for me anyway...)

(Just a piece...?)

Okay.

Then, come to the trial tomorrow.

Music: Silence

In fact, it's gotten worse. Lengthy court proceedings are no longer realistic.

Beginning a few years ago, a limit of three days was put on initial court trials.

Almost all finish in a day. Most with a guilty verdict.

That's some weird backstory on the judicial system to save until we're headed into our third trial.

Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here

Despite the last sequence in the detention center technically taking place the next day, we've just wrapped up "Day 2" of the second episode. Next time we'll start "Day 3" with another trial - this time with Phoenix directly on the hot seat!
