Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Part 73: Final Day, Trial: Role Reversal Redux

Part 73: Episode 3: Final Day, Trial: Role Reversal Redux

Five lines of testimony where we're given the option to press harder for more information. We actually have all the information we need already - one of those lines is a clear contradiction in and of itself.

I went back to the trailer to get my script and direction notes.

If she was going to a rehearsal, after all, why would she leave her script and direction notes behind?

Wait a second!

Why didn't you bring your script and notes!?

Why?

There was a murder, after all!

And you knew there was a murder before leaving Studio Two?

(Oh, yeah, I guess...)

Hmm...

Dammit Phoenix don't let her slide on that one!

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Wait, Edgeworth again!?

Your Honor!!!

Sound: Drama Pound

Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered

(Huh...!?)
Sound: Realization

Think!

Don't you see what that means?

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Objection

Phoenix you're letting Edgeworth steal your thunder again. Can we switch to playing as Edgeworth now? He's been a lot of fun today.

Sound: Stab

Sound: Gallery

The crowd is also excited!

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order!

Mr. Edgeworth!
Sound: Whack

...

What you have just said...

is a reasonable observation.

Or are you thinking of a career change to defense!?

...

I... appreciate the concern, Your Honor.

Sound: Desk Slam

Now, Ms. Vasquez...

(I can't believe Edgeworth is helping me!)

Me either! Last episode he was falsifying reports and leading his witnesses in how they should twist themselves out of our crosses. Now he's pointing out the contradictions in his own witness's statements himself! What happened!?

Hmph.

No matter.

I think you misunderstood me.

Hmm...

Her last line of testimony is replaced, with a subtle but clear contradiction staring right at us. I'll give you a few pages to think about it.

Let's press on it first, though.

How did you know about the injury?

H-how did I know!?

Sal.

He told me.

Before we continue, there were a few other lines where we still need to "Press Harder" to get some more information.

I was with Sal and Oldbag, the security lady, when we found the body.

Where were the other employees when you got to the studio?

They weren't there yet.

Sound: Desk Slam

Well!?

Oh?

What did I just say?

You should try to listen to what people are saying, boy.

(B-boy!?)

The assistant was there, too. Only Powers was absent.

The other way around?

Wouldn't you normally go looking for the missing person!?

Hmm...

Well, Ms. Vasquez?

Hmph.

Logically speaking, perhaps.

But no one there was thinking very logically, I assure you.

Also.

Doesn't stand out!? He's a giant lion-man!

We often left him on the bus when shooting at location. No one noticed he was missing.

(Poor Powers...)

Very well, Ms. Vasquez. You may continue.

The security lady, Oldbag, was quite agitated. Pointing at Powers, saying "he did it!"

Perhaps not.

Of course, I heard all this after the fact.

(Hmm. I don't think there's anything in there I can use.)

quote:

We missed the opportunity to press harder on the last line of Ms. Vasquez's testimony, because it was replaced after Edgeworth stepped in on the earlier press.

Then I went home.

Skip ahead to the prompt to "Press Harder," and we get...

Thinking back to when we first began this trial...

We were under the impression that there was no one in the trailer at all.

I suppose.

Why is that?

Well, we were in a meeting the whole afternoon.

What's the point of talking about that to the police?

(She has got to be the least guilt-ridden guilty person I've ever met...)

Guess we weren't really missing much there anyway.

Back to our new line of testimony:

Now, who was it that was injured again?

Music: Silence

You "knew that Hammer was injured"...?

Sound: Desk Slam

I mean, it was the Steel Samurai who was injured!

Sound: Drama Pound

Sound: Stab 2

Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered - Variation

Sound: Gallery

Okay, we're back in the game!

Sound: Gavel

Mr. Wright! Explain yourself!

Yes, Mr. Hammer is dragging his leg in this photo.

P-pretending...?

That person was Mr. Powers, not Mr. Hammer!

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Objection

...!
Sound: Stab

Th-that's right! He must have gotten it wrong.
Sound: Whack

I think not.

Mr. Manella was at the run-through that morning.

Why would he tell you the wrong person?

Sound: Desk Slam

Pretty sure this one isn't the answer, but there's no penalty here, and I'm feeling the music and want it to keep going longer.

You must have heard Mr. Manella wrong!

Sound: Desk Slam

You thought he was talking about Mr. Hammer!

...

Now that you mention it...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Crap, I lost the music. Phoenix, you were on a roll, stop giving her excuses!

I'm sure that's what happened.

Yeah!

...

Nick!

Sound: Damage 2

Oh, right... I kind of talked myself out of that one, didn't I?
Sound: Whoops

Quick! Start over!
Sound: Whack

Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered

Sound: Desk Slam

Okay, option #2 it is, then.

Actually, you didn't hear anything from Mr. Manella.

Sound: Drama Pound

Yes, but...

Yes, but remember!

Mr. Hammer was dragging his leg, too!

Sound: Pong

Sound: Realization

Aah!
Sound: Stab

And when was he doing this...?

Well...

and went to Studio Two. Where he was murdered!

Exactly!

I'm getting weird team-up vibes from these two.

Sound: Desk Slam

Ms. Vasquez!

Sound: Stab 2

That's why you were confused!

Sound: Desk Slam

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection

...!!!
Sound: Stab

Sound: Gallery

These objections are the best. The villain is caught not on their lies, but on their truths. Or in this case, being honestly mistaken about who was injured because she was taken in by Mr. Hammer's act! We just proved that she saw Mr. Hammer limping around, and that she knew that it was Mr. Hammer in the costume.

Sound: Gavel x 3

Order! Order! I will have order!

Witness!

Sound: Desk Slam

I didn't notice before, but no one is wary about slamming their desk around Ms. Vasquez anymore, are they?

Can you refute this claim?

...

...

...

Very well!

Sound: Realization

(Urk...)

Music: Telling the Truth

Well, you were blackmailing him, that seems to open up a lot of possibilities. Maybe he was getting too difficult to control, and threatened to go to the press or police with everything he knew? More importantly, since when do we care about motive in this game? She never refuted that she met Hammer at Studio Two, either.

Yes, he'd fallen on hard times, but he was a star!

I had nothing to gain from his death! Nothing!
Sound: Whack

Hmm...

We didn't need a motive the last two episodes. The first killer we made collapse on the stand, and the second one we had Mia's ghost somehow threaten him into confessing on the stand. I still don't really get that one.

Why would she have killed the victim?

If there is a reason, it is unclear to this court.

In other words, can you prove she had a motive?

I can speculate, but proof sounds like a bit of a stretch.

Nick, no!

Oh, I guess we're not going to have a choice here.

She'll get away!
Sound: Whack

I don't care if it's impossible, you still have to fight this one!

Ugh...

quote:

If we'd claimed to be able to prove it from the beginning, we would have just skipped the previous lines and gone straight to the next set.

Okay.

I present to the court evidence as to Ms. Vasquez's motive in this murder.

Now's as good a time as any! Come on, lucky badge!

Music: Silence

Why... are you showing that to me, Nick?

Sound: Whoops

I was just testing it out on you.

Huh.

Mr. Wright!
Sound: Whack

Y-yes, Your Honor!

Hurry up with it!

Music: Telling the Truth

Yes... yes, Your Honor.

Right. Here goes!

I present to the court evidence as to Ms. Vasquez's motive in this murder.

Most of the time, the music stopping after presenting evidence is a sign you've got it right. But this one is a false positive. Fortunately, we get to try again. As many times as we need, really. But I'm only going to give you one shot. What evidence should we present?
