Part 90: Episode 4, Day 2, Trial: Gourdy

This automated camera set up is clearly looking for Gourdy.

...!
Sound: Stab

Your camera was set to take photos in response to loud noises, correct?

You know, why is there only a photo of one of the gunshots? Or did they just both look the same?

...

According to this article...

Sound: Realization

Sound: Desk Slam

Well?

You were trying to photograph Gourdy, weren't you!

Sound: Objection

quote:

Not many picked up on it, but there are actually two solutions to this riddle! The article itself can also be used as proof, tying the loud noise from the article to the camera setup in the opposite order:

Sound: Desk Slam

The proof is this article about Gourdy the lake monster!

...!
Sound: Stab

According to this article...

(The article is displayed here, and for the next line.)

When Gourdy breaks through the water, it makes a loud noise!

Which is why you set up your camera with that microphone!

You had it set to respond to loud noises!
Sound: Realization

And that's how you got this picture when the pistol fired!
Sound: Objection

quote:

All other options are incorrect and incur a penalty:

Here's my proof! It's simple!

...

If it's simple... then why have you obviously made an error, Mr. Wright?

Urk...?
Sound: Light Bulb

What's that!?
Sound: Realization

Go home. Consider a career change.
Sound: Realization

(Gah!)
Sound: Stab

(How can they so casually toss aside this eviden... Oh. Whoops. Wrong evidence.)
Sound: Damage 2

Luckily for you, I'm in a patient mood, Mr. Wright. One more time please.

I guess Phoenix gave the penalty to himself there. I like the implication that this choice is so simple that the only way to get it wrong is to pick the wrong evidence by accident. Anyway, we do get to try again, assuming we haven't run our health bar dry.

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order!

I see...

(Yeah, sure!)
Sound: Whoops

Well, Ms. Hart?

Sound: Desk Slam

...

Yeah.
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

So, smart boy, I was down there trying to photograph Gourdy, you got me.

So what?

Huh...?
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Realization

Both sound effects play at once there. It's kind of weird, actually.

Music: Suspense

I think I've figured out where this is going. We're going to establish that the camera was automatic, so she wasn't actually awake watching the lake, and thus didn't see anything at all? Or maybe the first gunshot really did wake her up so she could see the second one?

Exactly!

What you just used several precious minutes of our time to prove...

H-hey!
Sound: Super Shock

It changes nothing!

(Not true!)

(But what could it have been...?)

(Whatever it is, I'm getting to the bottom of this!)

Ms. Hart.

Please revise your testimony.

...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

(Something will change... It has to!)

(And I'm going to spot it!)

...

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Allegro

We've hit Allegro! Time to finish off Ms. Hart!

Actually, I'm not a research student at a university.

I'm an investigative photographer.

That's why I was camping out by the lake.

But, that's all I was hiding.

Sound: Weak Gunshot

There wasn't much else to look at, so I just watched that boat the whole time.

Sound: Weak Gunshot

I was looking right at that boat, the whole time, cross my heart and hope to fry.

Not seeing a lot there, we'll just have to press hard and see what shakes out.

Music: Silence

Hmm...

Well, Mr. Wright. You may cross-examine the witness.

The witness's testimony is unchanged from before!

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Music: Suspense

It might just be me, but Karma's coming off a little desperate here. Objecting to all of our presses is one thing, but trying to keep us from crossing at all? Get outta here.

Er... hmm.

Sound: Desk Slam

(von Karma's up to something, I know it!)

There has to be something. All of Karma's objections have been trying to keep us from getting to this point.

Very well. You may begin the cross-examination.

Hah! That would be a first!

(Hah hah, very funny.)
Sound: Realization

I kind of figured that when we heard Allegro earlier, yes.

If there is no problem with the testimony this time, we will let the witness leave.

I will announce my verdict at that time, Mr. Wright.

Understood?

Yes, Your Honor.

Music: Silence

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Allegro

(I won't be able to beat von Karma any other way...)

(There has to be something!)

Actually, I'm not a research student at a university.

Sound: Desk Slam

Then what manner of person are you!?

One down with nothing interesting, seven more lines to go...

I'm an investigative photographer.

An "investigative photographer"?

Yep.

N' guess what!
Sound: Whack

Umm... what?

Sound: Objection

A "yoofoh"...?
Sound: Realization

You know, an "Unidentified Flying Object"? A yoofoh!

Ugh, a UFO. I can't say I've ever tried to pronounce that acronym as a word before.

I knew I should become an investigative photographer!

I... I see.

(Kind of a shaky basis for a career...)

Imagine what a scoop it'd be if I got a picture of that monster!

Is "Gourdy" really all that newsworthy?

Heck yeah! They even had him up on the TV!
Sound: Whack

(Last month's segment was "Bigfoot Sighted on Acorn Hill," I believe.)

I bet Lotta was camped out at Acorn Hill after that one, too.

Sound: Damage 2
Sound: Whack

Mr. Wright.

Let's keep moving, shall we?

Yes, Your Honor.

Yeah, not making any headway there. We need to make some progress... somewhere.

That's why I was camping out by the lake.

Yep. Borrowed it from a university professor.

It snaps a shot.

Yep.

So, how many pictures has it taken so far?

(Hmm...)

Well, there goes my theory about there being multiple incidents. I'm working on a new theory - the first "bang" was Gourdy rising from the lake, and the second "bang" was Gourdy shooting the victim. And Lotta (and the camera) didn't see Gourdy because it was behind Edgeworth, making it look like Edgeworth had fired instead?

But, that's all I was hiding.

I think it's time you told us why you felt you had to hide your true purpose at the lake.

Competitors...?

Sound: Objection

Ah...

Is that the only reason you were hiding the truth?

W-well, actually...

(Whatever you say, von Karma. I know you told her to keep quiet.)

If that's the worst Karma can throw at us, we're in the clear.

When I heard the "bang" I looked right straight out at that lake.

Exactly what sort of sound was it?

I have no idea why Gourdy rising from the lake would sound like a gunshot. But I don't have any better ideas yet.

It was a lot sharper a sound than I would have expected.

(Hmm...)

There wasn't much else to look at, so I just watched that boat the whole time.

There wasn't "much else to look at"?

Yep.

I kind of doubt she'd waste any time looking at a boat.)
Sound: Realization

(Definitely suspicious... Maybe it's time for some evidence...)

Witness! Continue.

Hold your hushpuppies, pops, I'm getting there.

I guess we've found the line with the contradiction. Nothing is really coming to mind, though.

Then I saw a flash, near one of the men's hands, and I heard another gunshot.

Was there nothing on the lake but the boat at that time?

Hoping more than thinking at this point.

I don't think so, nope.

That you could see, anyway. I'd kind of forgotten about this other witness. Maybe that person shot the victim from the boathouse (which wasn't visible from Lotta's campsite), and then planted the gun in the boat? But how did it get Edgeworth's prints on it...

(Hmm...)

Well, I'm pretty sure we present something here, but I didn't have a clear idea as to what to present at first. Here's our current evidence list:

Attorney's Badge - No one would believe I was a defense attorney if I didn't carry this.

Lotta's Camera - Set to automatically take a picture when a loud noise is detected. Faces the lake.

Robert's Autopsy Report - Time of death: sometime on the 24th or 25th. Cause: one bullet shot to the heart.

Lake Photo - Taken automatically on 12/25 at 12:15 AM.

Misty Fey's Photo - An old photograph. "DL-6 Incident - Exhibit A" is written on the back.

Gourdy Article - Article about a monster sighted at Gourd Lake.

Overhead Map - Overhead map of Gourd Lake.

Pistol Bullet - Found in the victim's body. The ballistic markings match the murder weapon's barrel.

Pistol - The murder weapon. .22-caliber. Fired 3 times. Bears prints from Edgeworth's right hand.

Reviewing the list didn't help me much, but writing up this update helped me figure something out. What do you think?
