Part 92: Episode 4, Day 2, Trial: Sinister Shot

Part 92: Episode 4, Day 2, Trial: Sinister Shot

Well, maybe that one was a little easy.

Notice the shooter's hand? It's not really strange by itself, but we'll get to pair it up with something else in a moment...

Sound: Desk Slam

Here, Your Honor!

The shooter...?

I'm not sure I understand. What about the shooter is strange?

The hand...?
Sound: Realization

quote:

Pointing anywhere on the shooter other than the hand just asks us to try again:

Sound: Desk Slam

Here, your honor!

The shooter...?

I'm not sure I understand. What about the shooter is strange?

Can you be more specific?

(Specific, right...)

The judge kindly doesn't penalize us here, just asks us to try again. So we're brought back to the photo for another shot at it.

quote:

Anywhere else in the photo, and we take a penalty...

Sound: Desk Slam

Here, Your Honor!

Where...?

Mr. Wright, I understand you're in a tight spot.

However!

You have nothing to gain by making baseless claims of faulty evidence!
Sound: Damage 2

Boom goes the health bar.

Y-Your Honor! Never mind that... my, my finger slipped!

Please let me show you again!

Hmm...

We're brought back to the photo to try again, at least as long as our health bar doesn't run dry.

That hand directly contradicts another piece of evidence!

Let me show you.

I'll show you the evidence that left hand contradicts!

Did you spot the left-right contradiction?

The evidence is clear.

However!
Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Desk Slam

Ergo!

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection

quote:

The game takes mercy on us after a punishing previous update; getting this one wrong doesn't incur a penalty.

(Hmm... I'm not sure this warrants a "take that!")
Sound: Stab 2

(I'd better think this one through!)

Mr. Wright, please hurry up. We haven't got all day.
Sound: Whack

Y-yes, Your Honor! Right away!

It's an endless loop here; we retry as many times as we need to get this one right.

Sound: Gallery

Now that's how you get the crowd going.

Sound: Gavel x 3

The crowd was so rowdy this time we had to cut-fade to later!

I would like to reconvene this court of law!

Mr. Wright.

Yes, Your Honor.

You have given us definitive proof today.

Not guilty, let's all go home!

However...

This leaves us with a rather large problem.
Sound: Realization

Sound: Shock 2

Weird note, but the normal blip sound effect as each character is typed is missing from that line for some reason.

Music: Suspense

Precisely!

The pistol was fired three times. Lotta Hart heard two gunshots. The victim was struck by only one bullet. I have no idea how to tie that all together yet. Is Edgeworth one of these two individuals? Is the victim? Do we have another twist like episode, where the man holding the gun is really the victim?

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

I'm going to go with what Edgeworth said earlier - he said that it seemed like the man had shot himself!

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Realization

quote:

Ms. Hart is a somewhat reasonable option, as the only other person on the scene. Let's accuse her.

Sound: Desk Slam

Who else but the witness, Ms. Lotta Hart!

Wh-what!?
Sound: Whack

Do you have proof of this!?

(Proof-shmoof! Always with the proof! Oh... wait, I do need proof, don't I.)
Sound: Realization

Mr. Wright! I'll have you remember this is a court of law!
Sound: Damage 2 x 2

One sound effect for the exclamation, another for losing two health sections. I didn't even notice there was a penalty on this choice, though the music should have clued me in.

(Uh oh. The Judge is mad.)
Sound: Whoops

Let me ask again!

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Who but the defendant could have shot the victim?

We're free to try again, hopefully with a better choice next time.

quote:

Larry as the murderer in the final episode after being the defendant in the first episode is still my favorite theory, as unlikely as it seems to be.

(Wait, wait--I can't do that.)
Sound: Stab

(Sacrifice one friend to save another? What's the point!?)
Sound: Whack

Well, Wright! Your answer!
Sound: Damage 2

Our hesitation costs us two health sections anyway.

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Who but the defendant could have shot the victim?

But I wanted everyone to go "Who's Larry?"!

Music: Investigation - Core

Sound: Gallery

I'm not sure we have any proof of this claim, but we seem to have shocked everyone nonetheless. I thought of a goofy way the victim might have shot himself - a deflection off of Edgeworth's attorney badge! (If I spout out enough crazy theories, one of them might end up being right!)

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order!

Yes, Your Honor. I can think of no other explanation.

Hmm...

I'm so very, very sorry, Mr. Wright.

Wh-what!?
Sound: Whack

The... distance?

Sound: Realization

A meter! Th-that's three feet!
Sound: Realization

Thank you for translating that for us dumb Americans.

There is no way it could have been suicide!

Sound: Gallery

Poor Lotta has been standing up there for weeks, let's wrap this up already.

Sound: Gavel x 3

Order! Order!

Sound: Whack

Of course! I had already considered the possibility of suicide, you see.

Sound: Select Jingle

Oh look, another conveniently-updated autopsy report. We lost the detail about getting shot by a single bullet; maybe that won't end up mattering after all.

Hmm...

I see.

Music: Silence

Sound: Gavel

Very well, allow me to state my opinion.

We have ourselves a puzzling problem here.

However!

We've collectively proven that the killer both was and was not Edgeworth. Unfortunately ties don't go to the defense in this court.

This is a condundrum.

Lucky for us, trials are allowed up to three days so the judge graciously is going to allow us the entire afternoon to get to the bottom of this mystery.

The court orders the defense and the prosecution to further investigate this matter.

Understood?

Yes, Your Honor.

...

Karma is so outraged he can't even acknowledge that he has to actually do some work.

Sound: Gavel

Time for our post-game pep talk.

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

Whew, that was a close one.

...

Hey!

Don't you have anything to say!?

Well, yeah, but...

What happened out there on that lake, anyway!?

If he didn't commit suicide, then who...?

The shooter was about a meter away, too!

And how did your prints get on the damn murder weapon!? You're lucky the shooter happened to be left-handed.

Sound: Stab

I did not kill him!
Sound: Whack

I was just kidding around.

Hmph.

Look...

I'm going to go check on Maya.

Oh, right, Maya. Are we going to have to go pick her up at the detention center?

Wright.

What?
Sound: Light Bulb

Tell her something for me.

What?

...

...

Music: Silence

...

Tell...

Sound: Realization

Ugh, that is not what you were going to say. While the prosecutors are saddled with combative witnesses, we're stuck with recalcitrant clients.

That's all.

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

I thought it might give me some ammunition for the trial tomorrow.

Of course she didn't see the shooter...

So the only part of her testimony that stood was the "bang" she heard.

Sound: Select Jingle

Aha! The mystery of the mismatched number of shots fired is back in play!

Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here

Well it was an interesting first day of trial, but as usual we're left with a lot of questions and very few answers. Let's see what we can dig up in our second day of investigation!
