Dormin's Hints - During bouts with Colossi, if you stall for too long, Dormin will give you a hint (voice-over with subtitle. No cutscene). These are disabled in Hard mode. For Valus, he tells you almost immediately what to do. He IS a tutorial, after all
"Hold up thy sword to reflect the light onto the colossus. Its vitals shall be revealed..."
Notes -
- Valus is a minotaur, o'course! He stands roughly 70 feet (21m) tall. These heights are found in the Artbook, probably written out in actual words rather than numeric. It was translated by someone over at the Team Ico Wikia.
- Colossi have two eye colors: blue and orange. Blue means either passive, or they aren't attacking. Orange means they are mad and/or attacking.
- Look around in the background during the bout with the colossus. A sort of observatory is built in to the cliffside. Every colossus have architecture or a shrine of sorts lying about. This one is pretty easy to miss, particularly if you flag down Valus before he gets to the far end (where it's more visible). Also, we made use of some ruins (ie: the columns near the top) when scaling the cliff.
- The ruins around Valus could very well have been a shrine, but one interpretation I read was that it was formerly an arena of sorts; enclosed with a high-up observatory. Given how Valus can be derived from valiant (courageous, brave, etc), this could fit in to why he is there. That or it's just grasping at straws.
- You'll notice birds circling over Valus. This ties in to an interesting feature of the colossi. They are animated beings, but seem to not be a living thing of sorts. Sounds kind of odd, don't it? Well, look at it this way: the birds aren't spooked by him moving around and probably see the guy as a big ol' perch. Maybe he stays still for long bouts before going on patrol like he was seen doing.
- Valus has an additional stomp move. I tried to stall and make him do it in the video, but he's a tad bit shy at times, it seems
- You might notice me jumping pretty regularly in the future whenever a colossus attacks. Many colossi, given their size, will stomp a weapon or appendage and generate a shockwave. This doesn't do a ton of damage, typically, but it will knock Wander down. And he takes a long time to get back up on his feet Anyhow, jumping at the right moment will negate this.
