Part 42: Obong-Ni Ridge: Turn 17
Obong-Ni Ridge: Turn 17The line of battle has now shifted, and our second line forces are now the ones engaging the enemy from a distance, whereas our frontline infantry are currently involved into close range blood orgy wherein there are no survivors, only those that die the least (as pictured in the bottom of the second screencap).
This second line now includes the newly arrived Pershing section. I'm going to keep them back so they can
A) Engage the enemies as they arrive via overwatch attack.
B) Not die.
C) Reform with the second line when the first one inevitably falls.
D) Not die.
The North Korean artillery is still engaging random targets around the field rather than the ridge, although, now that I analyse this situation in hindsight, it's less 'they are no longer attacking the main force' and more 'the main force no longer exists so the enemy is attacking the secondary force, which is now the new main force'.
There are several different layers of how fucked we are.
The Marines to the north are now completely getting destroyed. I can't imagine them lasting any more than two more turns. The way the enemy is penetrating in certain areas of the ridge means that each individual force is effectively being outflanked. However, the enemy has lost dozens and dozens of units while using these tactics, so I doubt they would be viable in a standard game of Steel Panthers (come to think of it, how easy would this mission be if the North Koreans had the same amount of units?).
...Wow... There are no words to adequately describe what just happened. Not only did about 8 or so fighter jets completely fail to do any damage to the enemy, but one of the F9F Panthers completely overshot the 13 or so enemy units directly in his line of sight and killed 2 marines.
Good job, Air Force.
Here is how brutally screwed the rest of those marines are. They are either being butchered by enemy infantry that quite possibly outnumber them 10 to 1, or are being suppressed by a brutal storm of artillery fire.
When I said there was a possibility of just surviving until the end, I had no idea just how bad this last turn would be. It may very well be over by turn 20.
