Part 61: A Rising Threat
Early update! Also 50th update!Last time, Mohs had Dist transform him into.... whatever the fuck that thing was. Unfortunately we can't do much about that right now, so let's just head after the Scorer extracting replica data.
Skit: The Past and the Present
: Dist should have known what would happen if someone tried to control the Seventh Fonon by force...
: But for someone to turn into... that... how can that happen?
: ...That technology, for bringing fonons into the body... I invented that as a child as well.
: : : !!!
: Wow... you really do make everything.
: ...I wish I could go back in time and kill myself as a newborn. I keep coming up with such troublesome things...
: ...That would suck.
: ?
: If you did that, Luke and Ion wouldn't ever have been born.
: ...That's true. I suppose I can't change the past...
Equal parts and here. Jade's in such a funk that he actually got logic pulled on him by Luke and Anise.
Poor Excuses
: Oh, you're right. Yes, let's go.
: Ah...
: Well that didn't work. It's not like I can mention this locket in front of Natalia...
: Luke? We're going now.
: Y-yeah...
A Question of Birth
: My, what's wrong? Is it something we shouldn't know about?
: W-well, not exactly...
: Ah hah hah, you're such a bad liar. Just tell her!
: Guy?!
: Truth is, Natalia, he's got a letter of a personal nature from Emperor Peony.
: But why hide it?
: This is highly confidential. His Imperial Majesty is considering making you his bride.
: M-Me?! But I've got Luke! And Asch, too, I suppose. Oh, what to do...
:
: Anyway, he asked that the letter get to your father without you knowing.
: ...Now I understand. Very well, I'll be waiting here.
: Thank you for understanding. Now Luke, shall we?
: Then we're coming too!
: R-right...
: I'm sorry. It just kind of happened...
: It's that locket you found on Mt. Roneal, isn't it?
: Y-yeah... I guess you noticed.
: You were standing there, staring at some locket you found, looking like somebody just died.
: He's right. Sometimes one just can't help being curious.
: Yup! ...heh heh.
: Just don't tell Natalia.
: Your Majesty, please take a look at this.
: I don't know what Natalia looked like as a baby, so I thought maybe Your Majesty could...
: This is Natalia. I'm almost certain of it. Where did you find this?
: On Mt. Roneal. At the spot where we and the God-Generals were caught in that avalanche.
: I think I've seen that before. I could have sworn that Largo...
: Are you sure? Well, Largo is about the only possible candidate, but...
: ...I hear that Natalia's childhood wet-nurse is away on leave. I hear she's now working for Astor in Chesedonia. Try to speak with her.
: Yes, Your Majesty.
: Do you plan to... tell Natalia?
: What would Your Majesty have us do?
: ...I don't know. Perhaps it would be best to tell her... but if it is indeed Largo...
: We'll report to Your Majesty again once we have a solid answer.
: ...Well, I'm just a replica.
: Oh, don't be foolish. You're still a nephew to me.
: ...Yes Sir.
: Nothing is sure yet.
: ...But it will be so hard for her if it is true.
: So, are we going to Chesedonia? Be careful. Natalia will catch on eventually.
: What about that Scorer performing illicit readings? How about we tell her we heard the Scorer was headed for Chesedonia?
: Nice. Natalia should go along with that.
: But we're going to have to tell her sometime, right? She'll probably be really hurt.
: Yes... it's hard to face one's own blood as an enemy.
: Right. And Natalia in particular has a fragile side to her that makes me worry.
:
What, and Tear doesn't? Smooth, Luke.
Skit: Connected by Blood
: All this heavy talk is really getting me down.
: Yeah, it sure is depressing.
: Yeah...
: If you all look so gloomy when you go outside, Natalia will know something's up.
: Indeed. Life has its ups and downs, after all.
Coming from the guy who wanted to go back in time and kill himself not two skits ago.
: But it's Largo!
: Then what about Tear?
: : : !
: Oh yeah... the Commandant is her brother.
: Now is not the time for such thoughts. We need to be calm and rational.
: Yeah. After all, it's not us the truth will hurt the most... it's Natalia.
: Oh, he talked about how you had Asch and all.
: Asch? So father is thinking of Asch and me...? But then you...
: Ahh, no. I meant he said Asch or me, either one.
: More importantly, we heard that traveling Scorer has headed to Chesedonia. We're already going in that direction, let's follow him.
: I see, perhaps he'll move straight on to Malkuth from there. Perhaps we could delay our report to Teodoro until after Chesedonia, then?
: S-sure, of course.
: ...All right. Let's see what we find in Chesedonia.
: Oh, I assure you. I'm crying on the inside. Racked with guilt.
: Uh huh...
Skit: Natalia's Future Husband
: I wonder whether Father will chose Luke or Asch...
: Huh? That should be up to you, right? Asch, with a zillion wrinkles from a hard life, or Luke, with a zillion wrinkles from moping around all day. Whatever floats your boat.
: ...It's more like wrinkles from getting mad at stupid little girls.
: ...S-so which do you like, Natalia?
: I... that is... you can't expect me to answer that! B-besides, it's Father that will decide, not me.
: It'll be Asch, anyway. Don't worry about me. The arrangement was with the original Luke.
: Nobody said anything about that! Besides, perhaps I don't like either Luke or Asch!
: Huh? So, what, Guy then?
: Or maybe even the Colonel?
: Hey, stop teasing her. Look how troubled she is.
: Boooo. Love is what girls always talk about!
If the writing staff is all sweaty neckbeards, yes.
Okay, Chesedonia yes? Let us be off. Our lie about the Score was just that a lie so we're going to have to figure out some way to separate Natalia from-
Illicit Scorer
: I suppose if we snuck off now to ask around, Natalia would be pretty mad, huh?
: ...Luke, wait! Something's odd here.
: Looks like our lie has become the truth.
Convenient.
: That Scorer is fake!
: The Score will be read by the New Order of Lorelei, and its glorious leader, Fon Master Mohs.
: Ion... no. You're...
: *Sigh* There go our last hopes for at least one casualty among the God-Generals. I imagine it's true, then, that Van survived and assimilated Lorelei within himself.
: If you know that much, shouldn't you be looking for the Jewel a little harder?
: You all haven't found it, either.
: If no one finds it, we keep the upper hand.
: Brazen as ever, I see!
: ...Sync, what's this New Order of Lorelei? What do you mean by Fon Master Mohs?
: Didn't Mohs tell you, our darling little traitor?
: I wasn't working with him because I wanted to!
: Now, as I was saying before that interruption, all who want Score readings, follow me.
: Stop right there!
: Yeah, he's right!
: But...
You wouldn't know it if you're not watching the videos, but Sync changes his voice here so he sounds exactly like Ion.
: ...Ion...
: Ah hah hah! Don't forget. Fighting with me means fighting with Ion.
: That bastard! How cruel...
: Anise, you can't let it get to you. Sync and Ion are completely different people.
: She's right. Just like Luke and Asch are different people.
: Anise, don't push yourself too hard.
: I'm not pushing anything...
: Natalia, would you take Anise to the bazaar or somewhere to cheer her up a bit? The rest of us will go speak to Astor to alert him of the traveling Scorer.
Without missing a beat.
: Yes, but Anise looked angry at being used as the bait.
: Jade will take responsibility for that later. But she was really depressed...
: Let's set aside responsibility for the moment and go see Astor.
Oh Jade.
: Please do. With that out of the way, might we...
: You'd like to speak with Natalia's nanny, correct? Ee hee hee. I'll call for her.
Astor is by the way a fucking wizard. He clapped his hands twice, and somehow the exact right person showed up.
: There's something I'd like to show you.
: Badaq?
: Meryl's father... he was Sylvia's... my son-in-law.
: Could you tell us a bit about him?
: Badaq used to work as a guard for a caravan that traveled across the desert. His closest friends used to call him the Lion of the Desert. He was a big man, with a big heart.
: Lion of the Desert... The Black Lion... His large stature...
: There's little doubt.
: So where is this Badaq person now?
: I'm afraid I haven't seen him since my daughter, Sylvia, passed away.
: ...Thank you very much. That's more than enough.
: If there's anything else I can do for you, don't hesitate to come by again, ee hee hee hee.
Well this sucks. Better go find Natalia and Anise.
: Yeah, more or less.
: ...Luke, I want a full report, later.
: I know, I'm sorry.
: You're weird. Why should you apologize, and not the Colonel?
Jade's coming back strong, this update.
: What's all this about?
: Oh, uh, hah hah, n-nothing...
: Really? Well, in any case, this New Order of Lorelei business is worrisome.
: Let's go talk with Grandfather.
: Which means Yulia City, right? Nice, I love that town!
: Oh, really? Why?
: Fon machines. Fon machines.
: Ugh...
: There's no need to react like that. Anyway, let's get moving.
Ready for a slew of skits? I hope so!
Skit: The Score's Power, The People's Desire
: This does present a problem.
: You mean the new Order of Lorelei?
: People will turn to the Order that reads the Score...
: And they're giving readings... dammit!
: Such is the result of using the Score as a basis for politics.
: We haven't...!
: Well... perhaps we have overemphasized it somewhat.
: They also said something about Mohs being the Fon Master... Mohs was obsessed with the Score, so I can see him going along, but the God-Generals...?
: Indeed. Their ideals are in complete opposition. Perhaps Mohs is simply being used...
: But for what?
: To chip away at the Order's military strength and provide a base to build their power until Van returns. That seems the most likely reason.
: What an idiot... to let himself be used, to be turned into a monster like that, all for the Score.
: Mohs... all he ever wanted was the prosperity of humanity...
Tear, you've come a long way since the start of this game, but for fuck's sake, would you please stop sympathizing with this guy?!
Skit: A Fake Ion
: I can't believe Sync did that...
: Anise... hang in there.
: ...I'm okay. I know that he's not Ion. But his face, his voice...
: How cruel, to use his appearance to hurt Anise...
: Why...? Ion said he didn't want to be a substitute for anyone. I don't really want to be Asch's substitute either... I don't think. So how can he play Ion so easily...?
: He may think of replicas differently than you or Ion.
: I don't understand him... I wish I could ask him about it.
: If he would listen...
: Yeah.
Skit: Playing Catch-Up
: Grrr... we can't even tell what's going on right now, but things just keep changing and changing! We keep playing catch-up when we don't have a clue about anything!
: We have to get ahead of the God-Generals somewhere, or we'll be playing catch-up forever.
: Our lack of information certainly puts us at a disadvantage.
: And the Key of Lorelei would turn things around? We could free Lorelei if we had that, right?
: Indeed. It looks like the God-Generals intend to create a replica continent, then destroy Lorelei once it's complete. So if we free Lorelei into the fon belt, their plan will fail.
: But that still puts us at a disadvantage. All they have to do is prevent us from using the key. But we have to stop their replica plan, deal with the miasma, and free Lorelei too.
: Well it's a good thing you've got Anise here to help you!
: ....Uh... yeah. That's great...
I'm taking a quick detour to get something out of the way now. One thing a lot of people don't know about Abyss is that it actually has it's own mini version of the Giganto Monsters quest from Vesperia. The Behemoth we fought in Inista Marsh all those updates ago was one of them, and now we're going for the second. Past the Zao Ruins here is a sand basin that is normally covered by a large sandstorm that is impassable. But now with are sweet force field, we can zip into the heart and touch down.
Wandering around here is another of these monsters: Sand Worm.
Insert your favorite Dune quote here.
Despite being better hidden, Sand Worm is a joke compared to Behemoth. He's so weak to water that any time Jade drops so much as a splash on him, he falls to the ground defenseless.
Case in point: he dies in under a minute.
Our reward is the rather underwhelming Gae Bolg, which is inferior to Jade's arena weapon in every way. Oh well!
At any rate, we can't wrap up this quest for a very long time, so for now let's head to Teodoro.
Chasing the Trail
: Leave the Order to me. I'll pull something together centered around Tritheim. To think that Mohs, a paragon of what a watcher should be, should come to this... it is truly a shame.
: Grandfather, Mohs mentioned an 'Eldrant'. Do you have any idea what he meant?
: The only Eldrand I know is the name of the Glorious Land of Ancient Ispanian legend... I'm afraid I don't know much about Eldrant, but something odd has come up.
: Something odd?
: There is an overall decline in Seventh Fonons, but there are spots at which they're being expended at an astonishing rate.
: Where?
: One is an undersea location near the Sixth Sephiroth, but an investigation team found nothing. We're currently in pursuit of a second site now.
: Pursuit? How can one pursue a stationary location?
: There's no other way to put it. For whatever reason, its position keeps changing.
: Could it be some mobile facility? A ship, or a carriage?
: I don't know. But it would take much more than a ship to expend this many Seventh Fonons.
: Is there no pattern to the movement?
: That's currently being looked in to. We do know that it's traveling around the ocean.
: A giant object traveling around the ocean, huh...
: The only peacetime application of that many Seventh Fonons would be fomicry. This is most disturbing.
: If you think so, Jade, then it probably is a facility for fomicry.
: Let's search the ocean as thoroughly as possible.
Indeed. We do have a fucking flying machine, after all.
So we'll just look around for a bit. Can't be too hard to spot.
See, there we go! It's a... wait, what?
Lost Isle
: A floating island? That's physically impossible...
: That island... I feel like I've seen it before...
: Shall we land and take a look? We may find some clue down there.
: It just might be the facility consuming Seventh Fonons that Grandfather talked about.
: Is this the Isle of Feres? It was crushed in the tidal wave after the destruction of Hod...
: Yes! It's the island across from Hod!
: The Isle of Feres?
: It's an island from the Hod archipelago. It had a lot of trade back when Hod still existed.
: But... even hit by a tidal wave, how could solid land become a floating island?
: Yes, I can't imagine it's a natural phenomenon.
: Which means there's some trick to it. Let's keep looking.
: I've got a bad feeling about this. Keep your eyes open.
Welcome to the most boring dungeon.
Music: Feres Isle
With the most boring music.
On top of being incredibly monocromatic and boring to look and listen to, this dungeon is also quite large and winding. Since everything looks the fucking same, you're going to get lost really quick. I'll try to chart a general path if you're playing along, because fuck this dungeon.
Skit: The Isle of Feres
: Could a tidal wave have destroyed the town this completely?
: The power of water is frightening...
: I can't swim, I hope the tidal wave doesn't come again.
: Don't worry, we're safe. We have the Albiore, anyway.
: ...It doesn't look like much of Feres' population could have survived.
: The collapse of Hod's affected so many other places... Akzeriuth, too...
: Mieuuu...
First off, you'll hit this plaza with a left and right path. The left is some lame treasure, the right is progress.
Eventually, you'll hit a large building. Take the northern door.
The rooms are filled with replica Oracle Knights, which our party has no problem slaughtering since they're faceless mooks instead of people we know. A lot of these rooms will lock their doors until you defeat all the enemies.
On the second floor is a ladder up and a southern door. You want the ladder: the southern door is just a shortcut back to the entrance of the building.
Outside is an elevator. Open the bridge with Mieu Fire, then take the elevator to the second floor. (The 5th floor has a Melange gel if you're hurting for one.)
This'll lead you to another room. Defeat the mooks to unlock a ladder to the roof, then follow the long path to the next map.
Why this Dungeon is Shit
: Now that you mention it, they do. Guy, how come they're all like this?
: Hmm? Well... I don't know the details, but I heard that a single architect planned the whole town. They named the island after him.
: So the architect was named Feres?
: Yeah. Apparently the emperor of the time was struck by the uniform beauty of the town, and the architecture of Grand Chokmah was influenced by Feres' style as well...
: I see. I see.
: What do you mean, 'I see?' You know more about it than I do!
: Not at all. I quite dislike giving explanations.
: ...Liar. You've been explaining things all the time.
: That's why I dislike it. Especially explaining general knowledge. I'd rather leave that to others. It's quite exhausting.
: Goodness, simple explanations aren't that tiring, are they?
: I am getting on in my years after all.
: Right...
Heh.
Ignore the doorway and the ladder up here: take the ladder down.
Enter the first northern door you can in this hallway.
Exit this room through the eastern door (after killing the baddie) and head across the big ol' wooden bridge.
This will eventually take you into another building. Again, if all you care about is progress just take the stairs behind you down to the first floor, then enter the door in the picture above. From here you beat too more groups of soldiers, and you can leave the building from ground level.
An Innocent Island
: Oh... I was just thinking. It must have been a beautiful town.
: ...Yeah. I don't remember it much, but there was a big port, and the town was always lively.
: Yeah...?
: The collapse of Hod, the tidal wave... Most of the people probably died without even knowing what had happened. It may have been easier on them that way. Relatively speaking, of course...
: It must have been horrible for the survivors as well. Nothing would have grown...
: And all of them were just innocent bystanders...
: An innocent island, washed away and forgotten...
: An innocent island indeed...
The path is strictly linear from here. Run forward to the next room, beat the baddies, and go a bit further until you hit this mansion. Head up the stairs on the left.
Arietta's Island
: That voice!
: This is my special place! You can't just come barging in! You're not welcome here, Anise!
: Feres is your special place? What do you mean?
: My family all died in the flood. Mommy liger saved me. I was so lonely, but Van came one day and invited me to join him. He stopped Feres from sinking and made it into my own private ship. Van and the others have visited several times. They said they'd make this our base.
: So this was my brother's headquarters.
: And most likely a fomicry facility.
: If you're talking about a replica machine, then yes, we have one. We need it. After all, Van promised he would recreate my whole city.
: That's nothing but an illusion! Replicas aren't your family, or even a replacement.
: No, you're wrong! Look at Luke! He's a replacement for Asch!
: Ion understood me! He even helped Van! The only reason Ion changed was because Anise took over as Fon Master Guardian!
: You're wrong! Master Van has tricked you!
: Luke, be quiet!
: But you betrayed him, Anise!
: My mediator, Largo, will decide the place. You can wait to hear from him.
: I'm going to get revenge. I won't lose!
: If what Arietta said is true, then we can assume that this is one of Van's facilities.
: Yes, let's keep looking. Is that all right, Anise?
: ...Yeah.
Inside we go!
The Glorious Replica Land
: So, this is where they're making replicas.
: Iemon and the others may have been made here, too.
: Let's shut it down. Perhaps that will help ease the expenditure of Seventh Fonons.
: Right. I don't think this world needs any more replicas.
: Luke...
: Why do you oppose the birth of our brethren?
: We will all be given a new place to live upon the heavenly plane.
: Do not interfere!
: Are all of you okay with this? It's not like you were born because you were wanted.
: You are wrong. We were all born because Mohs wanted us.
: If you say so, Mary... but once your heavenly plane is completed, your originals will all be killed.
: Why should we care if those who don't accept us are killed?
: That's barbaric! Without those originals, we... no replicas could be born!
: So? Now that we have been born, why should we stay beholden to the originals?
: ...What?!
: Confidence. That's why Asch gets mad at you. That's why you have trouble with Emperor Peony. You lack confidence.
: Call it a will to live that borders on arrogance. You had it, once.
There you have it for those who were wondering what Guy was talking about when he said he knew why Luke felt uncomfortable around Peony. Peony has all the confidence in the world and gives no fucks, as opposed to Luke who's second guessing his every move.
: You would call us arrogant?
: I wonder if you'll be able to say the same thing then.
The whole facility begins to shake violently.
: Behold the dawn of the New Order of Lorelei! All hands, begin preparations! Heh heh heh! Hah hah hah hah! I shall bring prosperity to all of Auldrant in fulfillment of the Score! Hah hah hah hah!
: Mohs! You promised us a place on the new Hod...
: The new Hod? So that's Hod?!
: What are we to do?!
: We go to the site of our covenant the Tower of Rem. Surely Mohs will come for us.
: But the navigational equipment was destroyed with the fomicry facility.
: We'll eventually drift ashore if we follow this current. We'll walk from there.
: Agreed. Spread the word.
: I can't imagine Mohs taking them in...
: Well, if it were me, I would certainly cut them off. As long as he has the data, he can make as many replicas as he pleases.
: So they're simply to be abandoned?!
: In all likelyhood. I doubt they'll realize that for a time.
: They still believe in Mohs...
: So is that island in the sky really Hod? If so, then that would make it the replica land that Van envisioned.
: I guess we'll find out when we get there.
: It seems risky... but you're right.
Goddammit Mohs.
Next Time: Eldrant has risen, we're doomed if we don't stop it right away! ...Wait, some guy built a multi-layered maze in his basement? SIDEQUEST TIME!
Synopsis:
I thought about it for a while, but eventually decided to ask the King
about the locket I found on Mt. Roneal. Though I didn't expect Natalia to
follow along...
We ended up making up a story to fool Natalia into staying behind.
Everybody else ended up coming with me, but that can't be helped. Now that
Natalia's not with us, let's go see the King.
Upon seeing the picture in the locket, His Majesty said that it was almost
certainly Natalia. Then Anise said something startling--she had seen Largo
with that locket before.
...Does that mean Largo is Natalia's real father?!
Natalia's wet-nurse should know more about her father. The wet-nurse is
currently working in Astor's mansion in Chesedonia, so we made up an excuse
that the traveling Scorer had been seen going in that direction and headed
for Chesedonia ourselves. I guess the report to Yulia City will have to wait.
When we reached Chesedonia, we found out that the lie we had concocted to
fool Natalia ended up being the truth--the traveling Scorer was there. We
tried to make the Scorer stop, but we stopped short when we saw his face. It
was Ion--no, Sync, another replica made at the same time as Ion.
We'd already heard about it, but he really had survived after all. And it
sounds like Master Van is alive as well. Sync said something about using Mohs
for his own ends, and vanished along with the mob clamoring for the Score.
Anise looked hurt from seeing Sync, looking so much like Ion. Jade took
advantage of that by telling Natalia to help her calm down--damn, how does he
do that so smoothly? Thanks to that, we can go ask Natalia's wet-nurse about
Natalia's birth, but Anise is going to hate us for it.
Oh well, we can't let this chance go. Let's head for Astor's mansion.
After warning Astor about Sync, we talked to Natalia's wet-nurse.
Natalia's father's name was Badaq, a man of large stature who was called the
Lion of the Desert. It looks pretty certain now that Largo really is
Natalia's father.
We found out what we came for, so let's go rejoin Natalia and Anise.
Well, we got a little sidetracked, but now we can report to Teodoro about
Mohs. Let's head for Yulia City.
When Teodoro heard about Mohs, he said he'd get to work restoring the
Order of Lorelei. Then he informed us that two spots had been found where
Seventh Fonons were being used up at a high rate. One of them was near where
Hod used to be, and the other was traveling around the sea--and far larger
than a simple ship. With no war going on now, the only thing that would use
up that many Seventh Fonons would be fomicry. We headed out to find that
large object moving around the sea.
As we searched the sea, we came across a strange floating island. It
should be impossible for an island to be floating, but we decided to land and
take a look.
We got off the Albiore, and Guy recognized the island almost immediately.
It's Feres Island, which was destroyed in the tsunami caused by the
disappearance of Hod. But Feres was an ordinary island--even a tsunami
shouldn't be able to make it float. Let's investigate it and see what going
on.
We found Arietta on Feres Island. Apparently this is her hometown. She
miraculously survived the tsunami and was raised by monsters. Eventually
Master Van found her here and took her into his custody. Master Van had
promised Arietta to bring Feres Island back to life, and had installed
fomicry equipment here for that purpose. Arietta said that Master Van is the
one that made the island float, too. This must have been one of his bases.
Arietta still hated Anise, and said that she would send Largo as a
mediator to tell Anise where the duel would be held. Then she left.
I feel sorry for Arietta. She was used by Master Van, and she never
realized that the original Ion she loved was already dead. But it's probably
just as hard on Anise for knowing all that.
From Arietta's words, we can be certain that Master Van had something to
do with this place. Let's find out where the fomicry equipment is.
We found the fomicry equipment, still operating. It looks like replica
soldiers were being created here. If nothing else, we can't afford to let any
more Seventh Fonons be used up, so we decided to shut it down.
All of a sudden, replicas--including Iemon and Mary--appeared from a
nearby room and criticized us.
They said that they had been born at Mohs' desire, and that they did not
care if those that did not desire them are killed. I couldn't believe what
they were saying.
After all, I'm a replica, and by being born I stole the place of my
original. I couldn't even imagine wanting to disregard that original.
But Tear said that the hubris of those replicas was something I used to
have, something I could use now.
And Guy told me that I lack self-confidence.
But it's just as true that Asch suffered because I was born, and I'm only
his replacement, after all...
I don't know. Of course I want to have self-confidence. But what did I use
to base such self-confidence on?
Just then, a huge island rose from the sea. The replicas called it the new
Hod. Then is that huge thing a replica of Hod?!
Before we could learn more, the replicas disappeared, saying they were
going to a place called the Tower of Rem. We boarded the Albiore and headed
for the floating island to see if it really was Hod.
