Part 28: - The Sabbath

A monster of an update this one turned out to be...

28 - The Sabbath

"We've found Professor Blackwell. ..He's up north, in Santa Balboa."

"What's he doing up there?"

"He's apparently hiding at the Eidoth Pharmaceuticals research lab. The FBI's been watching him since late yesterday."

"Do you think Eidoth is sheltering Blackwell, then?"

"The question is whether or not they know they're sheltering him. I doubt regular employees even know he's there, or what kind of research he could be doing."

"Are they going to raid the lab?"

"Yes. Tomorrow. To reduce the risk of another GUILT outbreak, they asked for our help."

"Then, we're sending Derek in with them?"

"That's really our only option. Can you accept the risk, Derek?"

"Of course. But... there might be one problem."

"And what's that?"

"She has as much experience with GUILT as Derek does. But, all things considered, taking her might not be a good idea. Don't worry. I'll arrange for someone else to assist you."

"...I understand, sir. But-"

"Is there something else?"

"I don't think Angie's going to like that."

"...................."

"I mean, they're going after her father! If I were in Angie's place, I'd want to see the truth for myself."

"It's a conflict of interest that could compromise the mission."

"It might be painful for her, but still--"

"Angie? You were listening?!"

"You shouldn't be eavesdropping!"

"I'm sorry... But, I can make my own decisions. Did you stop to think about how I might feel about this?! I'm not a child. I deserve a choice, at least."

Angie, I'm pretty damn sure you have to listen to the boss. That's how the real world works.

"Could you watch them arrest your father?"

"...Derek's right. I want to see the truth with my own eyes."

"Let her go. Angie may just be my assistant, but she's a lot stronger than me. I don't think I could have completed all those operations without her."

"..."

"What should we do, sir?"

"I doubt we could even find a suitable replacement, and sending Stiles in without an assistant is foolish."

"Thank you."

(Music: Despair)

"...Thank you for supporting me, Dr. Stiles. I'll be alright. But, so much has happened over the past few days. More than anything, I just want to know the truth. I want to find out for myself... I'll ask Father why he joined Delphi!"

"..."

"My father disappeared right before I entered elementary school. He simply vanished. Nobody had any idea what happened to him. There were times I hated my father. I'd ask Mom why he left us... but, she didn't have an answer. Even after all that, I found it hard not to respect him. Nobody ever had anything bad to say about my father. He's the reason I started studying medicine in the first place!"

"I'm sorry about this, Angie."

"I never thought my father could be involved in something like this..! Was all my hard work for nothing?!"

"...I'm sorry! I'll be fine tomorrow... But, today, I can't help it... I'm so sorry...! *sob*!"

"Angie..."

Reporter: "Local police have cordoned off the Eidoth research facility. This investigation may be linked to recent bio-terrorist activities. Investigators are now entering the building, and we'll return with more details as soon as they become available. Stay tuned to channel- *click*"

"...So it begins. I wish we could have sent more than one doctor, but we have patients here that still need help."

"Good luck, Derek."

FBI Agent: "We have a biohazard here, guys. If you don't have protective gear, you'll need to get the hell out of this area!"

"I can't believe this..."

"That researcher... He's infected with GUILT!"

"Get the anesthesia ready. We'll need to operate immediately!"

"Yes, Doctor!"

"I'm - a - doctor. ...Do you.. understand? I'm - here - to - help..."

...Damn it, Derek, he's sick, not mentally challenged.

"Forget about me. I'm already dead. Those bastards, they betrayed us! But... th-the ...Professor..."

"Calm down. Try to conserve your strength."

"He doesn't... deserve.. to die.. like thi--!"

"His vitals are dropping fast! What should we do?!"

"If we don't operate right now, he's going to die. I'm going to administer painkillers... Hang in there..."

"NO! Save the Professor!"

"...Don't worry. We'll take care of him."

"*gasp!* ..."

"The anesthesia is working. Get a table ready!"

"Right away!"

If you're interested, you can see all of this from Delphi's perspective in Second Opinion. Look for Opendork's LP in the Archives if you don't own a Wii. Why do we get to see from their perspective? That's for you to find out.

(Music: Patient Profile)

The researcher is named after Thomas Milan and Karen Ludwig, actors from E.R.

"I see. Guess we'll be going in blind, again. This almost seems like it was planned."

"What do you mean?"

"How could the researchers 'accidentally' release the GUILT? They know how dangerous it is! They created it!"

"Don't you think they infected themselves to hide the evidence?"

"That doesn't sound right, either. Delphi seems to have a weird preoccupation with death, but I don't think they would actually encourage suicide."

In Aum's 1995 Gas Attacks, the perpetrators of the poisoning were all expected to risk their lives for their leader to prove their commitment, but were still given the antidotes to use if they succeeded. Suicide was never something expected of their members.

"Sorry, nevermind. We need to concentrate on the patient."

Speaking of members, Professor Blackwell is one of the few characters in this game based on a real person. Can you guess who?

(Watch This Operation: Mission 5-8, S Rank.)

(Music: Gangliated Utrophin Immuno-Latency Toxin (GUILT))

"I don't understand. Isn't my father a terrorist? Let's begin, Doctor. I want to find out what he meant."

You try to suture up the wounds as normal, but something bursts from the last one as you're stitching it up:

...Ewwww... We use the laser on it and it disappears. Gross. Let's get out of here-

"It isn't over! The Chiral readings are still too high!"

Another cut appears, and out pops the GUILT.

Once in awhile, the ticks stop, dig in their little feet, and start sucking up a lot of blood. ...ugh, gross, I don't feel too well, either.

"There's more of them! How many are there?!"

"Wha... Everything is dropping! His condition has entirely deteriorated! Is that Blue Guilt causing it? Kill that one first!"

Vitals will plummet until you take care of our new friend, the Blue bug.

Oh god... Why... This is an arachnophobe's living hell.

After much flailing about with the laser, a few holes in our patient and a ton of more bugs, we finally kill them all.

"Could my father really have designed this GUILT? ...What's he trying to do? That was a strange GUILT, but at least we know how to handle it now. The laser is effective, so treatment is actually pretty simple. It was probably still in development when the authorities located this laboratory. So, we found it just in time. Nice work, Dr. Stiles."

In the video, I S Rank the mission. The S-Rank requirement is to never have any of the blue bugs form, skipping most of Angie's dialogue. This means memorizing the pattern that the bugs appear, and zapping them as they come out to ensure there are never five or more bugs onscreen at one time. It's not too difficult, except that you've never had to do something like this to get the S-Rank before. Flashback to me trying at least 100 times to finish this operation quickly, dealing with the cuts first and not understanding what I've done wrong...

"Good. ... He kept asking us to save Professor Blackwell..."

"Then, my father really is here."

"He must be further inside. Let's go, Angie!"

"....Okay..."

"...Professor?"

"...."

"I'm a doctor from Caduceus. You're going to be okay, sir. We need to operate immediately. Please don't resist."

"Heh. I think you're confused. But no matter... It's too late..."

The name "Kennith" means "Born from Fire" - or "Devil." It was changed to its more common spelling "Kenneth" in Second Opinion. The Kanji in his Japanese name, Amoh Kyohji, roughly means "Lord of Heaven."

"That isn't true. We saved your colleages, we can save you."

"Yes. I was disappointed by how quickly you stopped my GUILT. You found a way to treat all six strains! You've definitely proved your surgical ability."

True to his names, he created the GUILT.

"But, the GUILT inside me isn't like anything you've ever seen. Now that 'Savato' is completed, this facility means nothing! So, I'm ending it all before Delphi can-... ... ...Go! A pathetic sinner like me isn't... worth saving...!"

But before you start guessing, he is not our Shoko Asahara character. We'll talk more about Blackwell another time...

"I'm a doctor. Helping people fight off diseases is my job. You can worry about 'sin' after I save your life!"

Derek is finally starting to grow a pair.

"But it doesn't matter. ...I've made my choice."

"Why did you create GUILT?!"

"...?"

"You threw away your life, your reputation... even your family! ...Why, father?!"

"..! Angie! I was afraid that was you. I wanted to die... so you'd never find out about this."

"Just tell me why!"

"Angela Blackwell's father died 13 years ago. I'm just a ghost. Please, let me pass on."

"You can't do this!

"It's my job to help people, and I do it proudly. I refuse to watch you die."

"...As you wish. But, you cannot defeat Death. It is not of this world."

"..? Begin Anesthesia."

"Ugh..."

"We'll start operating as soon as it takes effect. Get ready, Angie."

"Spectral Analysis indicates this is the same GUILT as before."

"...Angie..."

"... I...saw a lot of my father's back. I can still see him sitting at his desk in his study. If I tried to speak with him, he'd say he was too busy... His own daughter... and he wouldn't even turn around to face me...! And then he left us. He turned his back on us once and for all. Was this what he left us for? ...Was this worth abandoning his own family?!"

"He's still my father. Please save him... Doctor..."

"You have a lot to answer for, Professor Blackwell. Those are sins you'll have to deal with yourself. But first, you need to survive this!"

(Watch this Operation: Mission 5-9, S Rank.)

(Music cuts into Silence)

That, and he told us outright. ..Hey, look, we get ten minutes.

"It's most likely the final type of GUILT. Let's get started."

Er... why is there no music? The only sound to be heard is coming from the oscillograph. ...Uh oh...

(NEW MUSIC: Judgement Day)

I think I have heartburn, now. Welcome to Savato, the final GUILT.

"Doctor! Attack the center one! It's the cause of all of this!"

But try as you might, Savato is invincible. Even if you use the Healing Touch, it is much too fast and will jump out of the way of any instrument. No laser, gel, scalpel, syringe, or drain can touch it.

"What the..."

"...! We just received Dr. Niguel's Analysis. I'll read it: 'essentially, the web nullifies the patient's heartbeat. It steals the pulse to create energy for its own uses. So, Savato is a parasitic form of Death itself. At the moment, I can't think of any way to stop it.'"

"...There's no way?"

"'But, we might have one possible countermeasure. It depends on the energy from the web, so if we destroy it...' Doctor! Destroy the web, it may be our only chance..!"

"I don't know. When I touched that thread, it started to melt. I brought spares, grab some from our supply box."

"We'll just have to deal with it, I guess. Keep cutting, Doctor!"

But when you cut it one more time, it only spins the web again...

Get rid of that web, and it simply spins another.

Take too long (about fifteen seconds) dealing with the little bugs it lays, and...

In total, it spins a new web three times.

Any remaining babies are eaten up by the mother as you finish the web. Trade secret: the more babies you allow it to suck up, the harder the remainder of this operation will be.

"...It's another report from Victor! 'If the web is destroyed, it can't continue absorbing energy. That should allow you to neutralize its protective corrosive layer!"

You know what to do.

Notice there's a faint outline of a spider web now burned into the heart...

It doesn't react well, but there's not much you can do. The longer you hold down the laser, the more aggressive Savato gets. Don't get intimidated, and just suture the wounds between laser recharges.

If you accidentally touch the GUILT with anything except the laser (the sutures while you're suturing, gel, etc.), it will get even angrier and do multiple attacks. Some attacks involve cutting into the heart and bringing out more babies.

Savato is very difficult, as it overwhelms the player very quickly. If you ignore it for too long, it will suddenly regenerate its coat. If you try to stabilize the lacerations with gel, Savato will make twice as many. If you don't take care of the babies, your vitals will be capped by 23 points for each blue GUILT on screen. Things will get from bad to terrible in only a few seconds if you let it.

There is no ideal way of dealing with Savato. It is entirely up to you how you decide to handle it. My advice is to take care of each of the lacerations as they happen, and ignore the bugs. It's a bit risky considering there's a maximum number of blue bugs that can appear before your S Rank is revoked, and your DS will hate you for it (and may even crash), but go fast enough and it should work.

Things are very hairy. Use the scalpel on it once its cloak wears off. It will regenerate a new cloak, but don't lose hope, it has to go down eventually. ...Use my Healing Touch? I told you, I'm not using it this playthrough.

"Chiral reaction decreasing. It's in your hands, Doctor."

"Victor! Chief! When did you get here?!"

"We rushed over to give you this. It's medicine for Savato."

"The researcher you saved helped design the necessary serum."

"..He collapsed right after that, but, hey! We got what we wanted. I guarantee this'll work. Inject it into the GUILT."

You must erode its protective coat one more time. When you do, and it eats all its babies one last time:

But once injected, Savato proceeds to wreck everything.

Despite Derek activating the Healing Touch, even when time slows down, Savato is still invincible.

This is the end of the line. There's nothing you can do. Savato is the embodiment of Death, and no human can defeat it.

But Derek is not human.

I once told you there are two kinds of Healing Touch. The one activated instinctively under extreme stress, and one that must be summoned.

When the two combine...

(Silence)

Death, GUILT, pain, healing, sickness, sound, time, existence, everything..

Everything...

..Stops.

"Dr. Stiles saved you..."

...Sure is a good thing I swore off the Healing Touch and didn't use it before this part! Otherwise, I might have gotten stuck right when I beat the GUILT and sat there without any way of continuing!

"It looks like we finally won the war against GUILT. It's over."

"It took you long enough, Stiles, but you earned that Healing Touch."

"I'm proud to be your assistant."

In the video, I S Rank the mission. You must suture all the cuts when time is stopped. Not letting Savato suck up any bugs will allow you to defeat it in only three laser strikes. It is not the fastest possible time, because fortunately for those of you who can't deal well with Savato, this operation has some shortcuts. But we aren't going to talk about them until we really need them: The X Mission.

"Yesterday you said I was much stronger than you. So I forced myself not to cry. I'm your assistant, Dr. Stiles. An assitant has to support her Doctor. ..Thank you for allowing me to see my father again..."

"...I'm proud of you, Angie."

"Doctor..!"

"Let's carry him out. ...It's finally over."

BONUS 8 - Faceoff with Death: Savato

(S.O. versions: )

This is the final GUILT, "Savato," or "The Sabbath" - Holy Saturday. The Sabbath was once held on Saturdays in Christian Churches until they changed the day of the week to distance themselves from Jews, who were being persecuted, and become more like Pagan religions, which usually celebrated their deities on Sundays.

She is an invincible, highly contagious GUILT no human being can defeat. Like a reaper, she wears a black cloak of flames upon its back. Underneath is a red, warped design of a Caduceus. If you came here looking for a real-life Savato, sorry, can't help you. It's a heart spider on fire that spins an acidic web that melts scalpels and absorbs energy from the patient's heartbeat. I've got nothing.

What I can tell you, however, is that its red-and-blue design is based on the Star of Life. This was made slightly more obvious in its redesign. Perhaps an even more famous medical symbol than the Caduceus, the Star of Life is a blue or red six-pointed cross emblazoned with the Asclepius (the true Staff of Healing, which Hermes' Caduceus staff is mistaken for) at its heart. The star's six points that represent detection, reporting, response, care, immediate transit, and hospitals. But Savato's six points make a mockery of the Star, and represent the six GUILT that came before it, and six particular weaknesses of humanity, the details of which we will discover later. It is the mother of all GUILT, the very first, the being from which all GUILT descends.

And it has the greatest themesongs ever.

The Second Opinion version of Judgement Day (or Judgment Day if you're American) blows Under the Knife's out of the water. You can hear "Judgement Day" in all X-Missions of Under the Knife, as well as most of them in Second Opinion. But Savato also has a unique theme designed for the final level (and X Mission) of SO.

"Vulnerability" (or 'X7 Savato') is a string and piano remix of the Trauma Center main theme, and it's one hell of a showstopper. Listen to a piano version of it here to truly understand its greatness. It set a trend of creating unique "Final Disease" music in all the Trauma Center games.

Let's all take a moment to appreciate Shoji Meguro.
