Wing Commander III & Standoff

Part 118: Sol System, Sol Sector, Mission 1 and Losing Ending (Story)

For people who are confused by how what's happening doesn't quite fit their memories - in order to attempt to present all of the content in the game in something vaguely approximately a coherent narrative, some of it is a bit out of order. This isn't a problem that WC3 itself has because the winning and losing paths are naturally enough mutually exclusive.

Well, once again we're back in a last-ditch line of defense around Earth; but this time with no wild and crazy strategy to bring about an improbable victory. And...well, it turns out that not everybody survived the mad scramble to return to our carrier, once the Kilrathi broke through our lines at the end of the last engagement:

Flight Deck

: I never expected to live long enough to see this day. Hobbes was, without a doubt, the finest pilot I've ever had the honour to fly with, and although he wasn't a Terran, he was, I dare say, the finest man I've ever known. My life was enriched to be able to call him my friend. Colonel Ralgha nar Hhallas, you will be dearly missed.

I'm not sure you can ever actually get this scene in normal play, though it's included on the game discs. Hobbes can only die in Proxima and Sol, and in the actual game there's nothing between you landing on the Victory in Proxima and the briefing for Sol - you can't even go to the rec room and look at the killboard, which is why there isn't one in this update. Certainly when I went out and got him killed flying on my wing for the express purpose of getting this scene to record, I didn't see a funeral afterwards. Fortunately, Mario Brito's WC Movie Player doesn't care about the movie not being accessible from the game.

You know it's serious when Rollins starts saluting.

: Ah, Colonel. [long pause].
: You know the situation as well as I do. In all likelihood, we will never see each other again. I know none of us wants to live under Kilrathi rule. So, all I ask that you fight like you've never fought before. For duty, for honour, all mankind.
[on Blair's salute]: Colonel.

Choose your own Blair!
We don't even have a partner for Earth's last dance - just us, an Excalibur, and a horde of Kilrathi. Or, I suppose, if you want me to fly something other than the Excalibur, now's the time to speak up...there may not be another.
