Wilberforce’s autocannon roared, overpowering the whoosh of his LRMs and the muted pops of his pulse lasers. His target, the distant Kit Fox, crumpled like a marionette with cut strings. Its boxy body toppled onto its left side, crushing that arm to a pulp even as the medium lasers mounted there scored a lucky hit on—Wilberforce had to pause a half-second to remember the pilot’s name—Reece Collier’s Dervish.

“Ergk—t-tough little bastard,” she hissed into the microphone.

“I am afraid the easy part is now over,” Wilberforce replied though the epithet ‘bastard’ stung, even indirectly. As if to punctuate his declaration, the grimacing skull-like face of Tjris Amirault’s Gargoyle crested the ridgeline. “It is them or us, and we must offer no quarter.”

“Tactical analysis,” someone called. In the din of battle, Wilberforce couldn’t identify the voice.

He frowned, toggling through his secondary monitors. “We are more heavily damaged than I would have preferred; and there are still too many of them standing. The Star Captain’s faster elements have pushed past to provide an anvil to smash our forces upon. It will be difficult to deal with one without turning our back to the other. He is hoping we will panic, and that our coordination will break down.”

His line crackled. “Would he accept our surrender?”

Wilberforce replied without hesitation. “He would accept our surrender. Your forces have fought with skill and finesse, I do not doubt that many of you would be made bondsmen or even permitted to join the Warrior caste after a time. I--”

“Would be lucky to be executed,” Piet’s voice filled the comms. Wilberforce blinked, then his face contorted in horror as he realized he’d been broadcasting on the company frequency rather than a private channel to Voronov’s Atlas. Dead silence ruled the comms.

“I would indeed,” a powerful voice boomed, “accept your surrender.”
