Talyns cockpit opened with an effort of will and only the slightest groan of protest from its well-protected hinges. Her Cougar settled, joints compressing as she brought it to a full stop. She leaned the `Mech forward, as far from the smoke at her back as she could manage. Her palms pressed against the uncomfortably warm armor plating skirting her cockpit as she leaned as far out as she could manage. Water streamed from her eyes as she greedily sucked clean air into her aching lungs and forced herself into a paroxysm of coughing.
Her powerful legs pressed against the underside of her command couch to secure her as she tried to get her head as low as she could, on the off chance that the toxins in the smoke were heavier than air and needed a little extra help. It was probably unnecessary, but Talyn had never been one for half measures. Not since shed held back in an inter-sibko brawl and the boy shed incapacitated had returned the week later to slay her favorite hunting falcon with a thrown rock.
She let herself hang there, palms pressed against warm ferro-fiberous plating and relaxed. A lull in a battle like this was to be treasured, a few moments of precious calm as both sides in a close brawl realized they couldnt safely continue and yet neither could they simply withdraw. Talyn grinned, found her lungs, and as she settled back into her command chair and her hud sprang to life she let loose her best imitation of a Jade Falcons cry. Like a young hawk returning from a hack, she had returned. The Cougar, headless for a brief moment, roared back to life beneath as her cybernetics reestablished a connection to the computer.
The hunt was back on.
