Part 477: Sludge Factory - Turn 21

Sludge Factory: Tactical Update 21

Subaltern Rybar’s crippled Wasp lurched forward. Its damaged legs could barely support its twenty-ton weight, and molten armor had run into the actuators causing them to grind and catch with each movement. The technical crews wouldn’t be happy with the damage he was doing to the little machine, but Zaahir still had a battle to win.

As his machine passed the corner of the massive coolant factory, the slab-like enemy tank hove into view. Its turret spun, the rotary barrels of its machineguns buzzing to life as the gunner tried to bring the lasers to bear over the boxy vehicle’s gauss rifle housing. Zaahir didn’t care, let them fire. In his past attempt to cripple the machine he’d spotted what seemed like a weakness in the enemy combat vehicle’s design. He twisted, trying frantically to spot that flaw again.

The Athena’s guns cut the legs out from under the Wasp, but in that instant it didn’t matter. The tip of the barrel of the little machine’s medium laser physically struck one of the Athena’s heat exchangers and Zaahir fired instantly. The exchanger, already nearly overloaded by the engine’s waste heat, exploded in an instant and, with nowhere for the excess heat to go, the tank’s engine fell silent as automatic safeguards kicked in to keep it from incinerating everyone in the crew compartment.
