Part 518: Laager - Turn 14

Laager: Tactical Update 14

The BattleMaster’s hardened battle fist crushed the Huron Warrior’s right breast like an egg, shattering structural supports and flaking away the last of the medium `Mech’s armor as the ceramet failed. Whole intact plates of armor fell away as the Huron Warrior’s flailing arms failed to save off the strike. The pilot turned and ran, his or her will to continue the battle failing. That was the problem, Kernoff mused hypocritically, with state-owned BattleMechs. If a soldier was held entirely responsible for the loss of his or her machine they’d rout almost instantly in the face of a foe willing to risk theirs.

That’s also what made the Wolverine’s pilot so dangerous, Kernoff realized. The `Mech with the imperial purple shoulder wouldn’t be baulked by an armor breach like the others—likely they’d been made responsible for the prosecution of the rest of the battle when the gaudy Rifleman had been driven away. The pilot was a veteran: they moved with an efficient grace the other `Mechs in the company hadn’t quite matched, and thus-far the Wolverine hadn’t hesitated to throw itself in harm’s way—that it had gone so long undamaged was nigh miraculous.

It was likely, Kernoff considered, that far more than the pilot’s life hinged on their success or failure. And of course the last machine still inside the compound’s walls would be the most tenacious of the lot.
