Nergal Reactor: Tactical Update 3

A missile the size of a Stinger’s forearm flashed overhead and exploded, raining harmless shrapnel down on Duncan’s Atlas. Razor-sharp shards of the missile’s twisted, blackened casing scratched away at the paint on the war machine’s head and shoulders, revealing hints of the dull gray metal and primer beneath. He figured as long as his Atlas was clearly visible the Clans would feel compelled to advance towards him, and as long as he didn’t move they’d wonder whether the machine was even being piloted. It was a daring, possibly foolish risk—and one he certainly couldn’t maintain much longer—but for the time being he’d been spared a direct attack.

He snorted with amusement, “Lucky that detonated harmlessly. A missile that big could’ve caused some real damage. I thought the Clans weren’t known for shoddy construction?”

“That detonation was no accident,” Noretti sounded annoyed. An oddly derisive edge crept into her voice, “That was an Arrow IV artillery missile. The Sea Foxes have brought a Naga with them, you’re standing in a minefield now. Boss.”

“The Naga’s a `Mech the Clans don’t fully appreciate,” Bethany interjected. “It’s reserved for punishing poor pilots in normal circumstances. It should be kilometers away with a full star of other Nagas firing barrages at targets dictated by Clan leadership, not participating in a heavy push with an elite front line unit. There’s something fishy about it being here, especially since it went out of its way to hide that southern Star—Lance—from us with a smoke missile.”
